Avago Adds Support for European Vertical Message Sign Regulation

Avago Technologies, a supplier of analog interface components for communications, industrial and consumer applications, announced its support of European Standard EN 12966-1 for variable message traffic signs with new 5mm extra high brightness LED lamps.
Avago noted its new LED products to support the variable message traffic sign requirements for 15 degrees and 30 degrees viewing angles are the HLMP-Ex1A/1B-xxxDV (15 degrees) and HLMP-Ex3A/3B-xxxDV (30 degrees). These 5 mm extra bright LEDs have minimum luminous intensity ratings of 12,000 mcd (15 degrees LEDs) and 5,500 mcd (30 degrees LEDs) and are available in red and amber colors. The visual requirements of signs set the viewing angle of the LEDs. Signs installed on highways, for example, require bright LEDs with a narrow beam width, but in cities with a requirement for short distance legibility a beam width LED is usually required.
Outdoor message signs must typically operate for over ten years in a harsh, corrosive, and exposed working environment. Avago's new 15 and 30 degree viewing angle lamps are manufactured for outdoor signal and sign applications. The maximum LED junction temperature limit of +130 degrees C enables high temperature operation in bright sunlight conditions. The lamp epoxy uses UV inhibitors to lower the effects of long term exposure to direct sunlight.
