Consumers have many options for energy-efficient light bulbs

When the Michigan Chandelier Co. opened 98 years ago in downtown Detroit, its main focus was helping customers make a major change in how they lit their homes — moving from gas lanterns to electric lanterns. Almost a century later, the business is again helping customers get a handle on changing the way they light their homes. Federal laws designed to phase out the incandescent light bulb in favor of new, more energy-efficient light bulb alternatives will begin in Michigan in 2012. And already, the customer questions are rolling in. "It's like uncharted territory," said 62-year-old Rick Lange of Bloomfield Hills, a recent shopper at the company's Troy store. "There is so much going on with all of these new bulbs, it's a bit confusing."
