Light bulb rules muddle the market

Starting in January and through 2014, many of the energy-guzzling incandescent bulbs based on Thomas Edison's 132-year-old invention will be phased out, though plenty of specialty bulbs will be exempt. The legislation has helped spur the production and improvement of the next generation of light bulbs, including compact fluorescent and light-emitting diode, which is the centerpiece of the growing company Lighting Science Group in Satellite Beach. But their higher cost and quirks, and confusion about what the Bush legislation actually calls for, has muddied the marketplace.
