Lights 4 Living Respond to New Research Developing Crystals for Warmer LEDs

Scientists are looking at a new family of crystals that glow different colours to help develop LEDs that can produce warmer more natural white light, according to networkworld.com.
Researchers from the University of Georgia, Oak Ridge and Argonne National Laboratories have grown nanocrystals using europium oxide and aluminium oxide powders as the source material because rare earth element europium is known to have good phosphorescent properties.
LEDs produce light by passing electrons through a semiconductor material in combination with materials called phosphors that glow when excited by radiation from the LED. The scientist’s new approach to generating warm white light is to hit a mixture of phosphors with ultralight radiation from a LED to stimulate the many colours needed for white light.
