LEDs, rebound effects, and investment prospects

Peter Michaelis of Alliance Trust Investments reveals why those who think green investment requires them to forego attractive returns could not be more wrong. The first area to catch Alliance Trust's eye has already been widely tipped by plenty of technology and investment analysts, but Michaelis is convinced the potential for LED lighting systems to break into the mainstream is still being underestimated by many. "It used to be a case of you would put LEDs in and over three years you would make your money back, but while that may work for commercial lighting, most people will still just want to buy the 50p bulb," he says. "The thing is the price is coming down so quickly that very soon LEDs will be the same cost [as conventional lighting]. In some applications we are already there. We're seeing some LED street lights that are cheaper than sodium alternatives, it then needs less maintenance, lasts longer, and has much lower running costs."
