UI to replace streetlights with LEDs

In an effort to promote energy efficiency and save money, The United Illuminating Co. will replace more than 50,000 streetlight bulbs with LEDs across its service area. UI, the electric distribution subsidiary of UIL Holdings Corp., said by the time the project is completed in 2021, the effort will reduce electric consumption by about 12.8 million kilowatt-hours a year across the 16 towns and cities where UI owns and maintains the streetlights. It’s the equivalent of the electricity used in about 1,500 typical homes in a year.
