The largest light show on earth
Starting March 5, the San Francisco Bay Bridge will sport an absolutely mind-boggling light show. The bridge’s west span will feature LED lighting that
is just under two miles wide and upwards of 500 feet (152m) high.
For the next two years, over fifty million people will experience these LEDs flashing on the bridge. The craziest part is that the lighting pattern is algorithmically generated from weather, wildlife, and traffic, so the patterns never repeat.

IKEA Announces 'All-LED' Lighting Agenda
The Swedish home furnishings giant announced its’ intent to sell only LED lighting in its stores by 2016.
“No more halogen. No more Sparsam low-energy bulbs. No more fluorescent lights. We’re putting all our development and design efforts behind LEDs because we think everyone should be able to afford to illuminate their lives with the most sustainable lighting available.”
Bulbs and fixtures built around light emitting diode technology now produce the same color as traditional incandescent bulbs (earlier versions tended to a blue cast), noted the IKEA declaration of intent.

ASB GlassFloor replaces painted lines with LEDs
Multi-purpose sporting courts can be a jumble of different colored lines and markings that can be confusing to spectators and players alike. Similar to LEDSSPORT's Pulastic LED Court, the GlassFloor flooring from German company ASB uses LEDs embedded in the floor to display the line markings for different sports at the flick of a switch.
The ASB GlassFloor features an aluminum frame that supports the glass surface under which an array of LEDs are positioned. Because the floor is programmable, it means arena owners do not have to repaint the floor for each sport. Instead, a quick flip of a switch causes the floor to change for a different sport, saving time and money.

LED lighting suffers bad press in Van Gogh paint-degradation study
Museums and art galleries are often touted as excellent applications for high-quality LED lighting, provided that the necessary targets for characteristics such as color rendering can be met.
Among the benefits provided by LED lighting, alongside energy savings, is the lack of ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation. However, many different materials are used in works of art, and each can respond differently when exposed to different wavelengths of light.

Subzero LED Lamp Range
UK UV technology developer Integration Technology Ltd (ITL) has introduced an LED variant to its heritage SubZero UV lamp range providing class leading high power output for an air-cooled system.
A dedicated curing system for wide format inkjet printers, the new Subzero LED offers ground-breaking performance for air-cooled LED technology combined with the architectural pedigree, features and benefits of the UK-based company’s 2005 launched SubZero UV lamp range. Key features align the brand’s reduced footprint, low weight and field serviceability, with a curing ability previously only achievable using water cooled LED systems.

Caliper 2012 year in review
The US Department of Energy (DOE) has released a year-in-review of its Caliper program, and suggests that LED products are becoming more efficient, less costly, and producing more light than ever before. In 2012, Caliper reports focused on a single product type, rather than using a number of different lamps and luminaires in a single summary report. By doing this Caliper could provide more in-depth analysis of the performance baseline of conventional products and the expectations for LED products.

SEMI publishes HB-LED standard relating to sapphire substrates
Several SEMI task forces have been developing standards related to LED manufacturing, and the first of these, describing specifications for 150-mm-diameter sapphire wafers, has now been approved. The HB-LED Standards Committee of SEMI, the global semiconductor industry association, has approved its first LED-related standard, entitled “SEMI HB1: Specifications for Sapphire Wafers Intended for Use for Manufacturing High Brightness-Light Emitting Diode Devices.”

Light bulb sparks bizarre blaze
A light bulb was the apparent trigger of a bizarre blaze at Dayspring Harvest Ministries Wednesday in Ellwood City. Borough firefighters said a light bulb in a curio cabinet in the gift shop of the ministries, at 316 Sixth St., burned a hole in the top of the cabinet causing a silk floral arrangement on the top of the cabinet to burst into flames and fall to the floor, spreading the fire.
New LEDs saving Yakima money
Yakima continued to install LEDs on street lights around the city. Crews were doing more of it this week. They're putting 40 LEDs on 40th Avenue between Fruitvale Boulevard and Powerhouse Road. The city was changing the lights to save money on electricity. It's already saving ten-percent on the utility bill.

Phoenix plans to switch street lights to LEDs
Phoenix leaders are planning to switch 90,000 street lights to LED technology which is brighter and has lower energy costs. Street Transportation Director Wylie Bearup said LEDs offer another plus. "The bright light tends to deter crime and pushes criminals away from a neighborhood, since those neighborhoods tend to be more brightly lit and that's another reason we're planning to convert."

Waseca tries LEDs on for size
The success of the city of Waseca’s experiment with new street light technology might be measured by what people aren’t saying about it. 'There have been some random comments, but nothing negative,' Utilities Department Director Carl Sonnenberg said of a pilot project “covertly” begun last spring. Eight light emitting diode (LED) street lights were installed unannounced along Seventh Avenue. Sonnenberg said he did so without publicity to get a true gauge of public perception.

How Smart LEDs Could Change Your Home
Smart, Internet-enabled light bulbs made with LEDs are attracting entrepreneurs and major companies who see the bulbs as the next big thing in lighting. The innovation has attracted a slew of inventors, entrepreneurs and big players in the business. The smart bulbs connect to a local network, and can communicate with a smartphone, computer or tablet. Owners can then use their phones or computers to control the brightness and, in some cases, color of the light.
