Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH of Regensburg, Germany has launched the Oslon Black Flat S series, which is claimed to provide the first single-LED solution for adaptive front-lighting systems (AFS) in vehicles. AFS enables the direction of the light beam to adjust when cornering for example, providing optimal visibility by illuminating the side of the road in addition to in front of the vehicle. This also protects oncoming traffic from glare through the adaptive driving beam (ADB).
The Oslon Black Flat S series is claimed to comprise the first surface-mountable LEDs with up to five individually controllable chips. Switchable light segments enable oncoming traffic and traffic further ahead to be masked out, making driving more comfortable and safer. With their improved thermal properties, the high-power LEDs offer system benefits and are suitable as an entry-level ADB solution even for vehicles in the compact class, reckons the firm.

The Integral Rules of Good Lighting
Ever walked into a room and felt instantly relaxed? Or entered a space and become overwhelmed with an inexplicable sense of anxiety? According to expert David Gray, it's probably because of the lighting. Gray, sales manager of the Professional Division for Lamps Plus, has spent his life helping clients achieve just the right light to correctly define a space. As such, he's well attuned to the intricacies of light levels and how they can affect our moods and behaviors. When we pick up a pack of bulbs from Home Depot with little regard to anything more than the wattage and price, we may be doing ourselves a big disservice. AD caught up with Gray to learn about the common mistakes both homeowners and designers make in lighting design and to get his tips for achieving a perfectly lit room no matter the setting.
10,000 LED street lights installed in Essex helping to save taxpayers £600,000 per year

Smart lighting project advances, despite financing questions
An ambitious plan to convert 85 percent of Chicago’s outdoor lights to LED technology got the green light Thursday amid concern about how it would be financed. Mayor Rahm Emanuel once hoped to use his slow-starting Infrastructure Trust to attract private investors to bankroll the costly conversion of 270,000 outdoor lights along the lakefront and in streets, alleys, viaducts and pathways. Since the LED lights will replace an outdated infrastructure that has higher built-in energy costs, the overhaul was supposed to save enough money to cover conversion costs and still give those investors an attractive enough return on their money.

Jacksonville upgrading to LED street lights
The city of Jacksonville and JEA are upgrading all existing street lights with new bright LED lights. Neighbors in St. Nicholas are some of the first to get the lights. The city says this will save big money in the long run, and some neighbors are on board. Others, not so much. To many, bringing state of the art LED lighting to the River City is a bright idea. JEA says not only will they light up the night, they'll save energy and money.
Which LED floodlight should you hang overhead?
Plenty of homes keep things lit using overhead floodlights in recessed lighting setups. BR30-shaped bulbs like those are ideal for overhead lighting because they cast all of their light downwards, thanks to the "bulging reflectors" that make up the "BR" of BR30. If you're looking to upgrade bulbs like those, or if you've just had one burn out on you recently, then the answer is almost certainly to go with an LED, where your choices are on the rise as prices continue to fall. But which one should you go with?

LG Innotek launches UV LED module for sterilizing water purifier faucets
LG Innotek succeeded in mass-producing ultraviolet (UV) LED module that sterilizes the inside of water purifier faucet aerators. The company started to mass-produce the UV LED module for sterilizing water purifier faucet aerators at the end of the last month. This product is built in LG Electronics’ new direct water purifier “PuriCare Slim Updown” launched in March in the Republic of Korea.
A water purifiers faucet aerator always holds a small amount of water. This part is prone to contamination due to the growth of germs that come in with the influx of air. However, it was difficult to install a sterilizer inside a faucet aerator because its space is too narrow.
LG Innotek developed a UV LED module customized for the faucet aerator that has strong sterilizing power and is harmless.

Seoul Semiconductor has filed a patent infringement lawsuit in Germany asserting infringement of its high-power LED technology
Seoul Semiconductor Co., Ltd filed a patent infringement lawsuit in Germany in the District Court of Düsseldorf against Mouser Electronics Inc. (“Mouser”), a global electronic components distributor, asserting infringement of an LED patent.
According to the complaint, the accused products include LEDs for high-power light emission. Further investigation suggests that the accused products from Mouser are manufactured by multiple LED companies, including Everlight Electronics Co., Ltd., a global top-10 LED maker. In the lawsuit, Seoul has sought a permanent injunction, damages, and recall and destruction of the allegedly infringing products.
The asserted patented technology serves to efficiently extract light emitted from the internal LED structure by treating LED chip surfaces, thereby significantly improving light intensity and brightness. This patented technology has been widely used for various high-power LED applications, such as automobile lighting, cell phone flashlights, outdoor lighting, UV LED appliances, and others.
According to market research firm IHS, the LED penetration rate in automobile headlamps is expected to increase sharply to 32.3 % by 2021 from the current penetration rate of 16.4%. This high-power LED technology is already being used for exterior automobile lighting including headlights and daytime running lights. Furthermore, it is expected to become a significant technology for electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles, which require high-power LED lighting with high heat dissipation for energy efficiency.
In addition, this high-power LED technology also applies to LEDs for mobile phone flashlights, which require higher light intensity. Because margins for flashlight LEDs are higher than those for backlights, the flashlights LED market has still grown steadily despite the overall decline in the IT sector LED market.

TP-Link Smart Wi-Fi Bulbs get color change
Turning on a lamp or other light fixture with your voice can feel like magic. I use the feature every day with my Amazon Echo and WeMo smart outlet. At the end of the evening, when heading to bed, I verbally tell Alexa to turn off the lamp. If I need to get up at night for, say, a drink of water, I can easily turn it back on the same way. It is great. WeMo is not the only game in town, however, as there are plenty of smart outlets an bulb manufacturers. TP-Link is a popular manufacturer of smart devices, and its bulbs are compatible with Alexa voice commands too. Today, the company's color-changing bulbs are gaining a new Alexa skill. Using your voice, you can easily change the color or white balance with ease.
Rome’s LED Streetlights
The naysayers are correct about the LED lights in Rome: The old lights are unambiguously better — for the residents’ health if nothing else. There is significant research showing that blue-spectrum light at night interferes with the body’s circadian rhythm and can affect sleep patterns. Indeed, the Canadian Olympic rowing team used blue-light blocking sunglasses for better sleep at the Games in Rio, while the Dutch swim team used exposure to intense blue light before nighttime races to improve performance.

GE without light bulbs puts focus on other industrial spare parts
It’s light (bulbs) out at General Electric Co. Almost 140 years after GE founder Thomas Edison developed the first practical incandescent light bulb, the industrial giant is considering parting with its consumer lighting business, according to the Wall Street Journal. Frankly, it’s been a long time coming and is more of a symbolic step than anything else: The unit’s reported potential sale price of about $500 million amounts to just 0.2% of GE’s current market value. But symbolism matters at a company like GE, whose long history has included a series of evolutions.

Fagerhult buys IoT lighting specialist Organic Response
A winner has emerged in the sweepstakes to buy troubled Internet of Things (IoT) lighting specialist Organic Response. Swedish lighting vendor Fagerhult Group has picked up the Australian company's intellectual property (IP) and some of its assets for an undisclosed sum. The impact of the deal could stretch to other significant players in the solid-state lighting (SSL) and IoT sectors.
Organic Response's sensor-equipped smart lighting technology resides inside luminaires and helps LED lighting systems double as data collection devices, enabling facilities managers to make better use of buildings by observing things like room use and occupancy. The company's technology also automates the process of commissioning indoor lights so that they know when to turn on, off, up or down and thus improve energy efficiency.

Sense Light is a light bulb you’ll never have to turn on or off
When Thomas Edison invented the modern light bulb, he certainly had no idea that his invention would evolve to where it is today. LED bulbs can last for 30,000 hours or more before they need to be changed, and now we have “smart bulbs” that connect to your iPhone or Android and change colors with a tap or two. But the smartest smart bulb we’ve come across doesn’t connect to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or anything else. Instead, it’s the Sense Light by Saffron Lighting, a brilliant outdoor light that screws into any standard socket and senses the light levels around it, turning on automatically when the sun sets and off automatically each morning when the sun rises.

Chicago Picks Firm To Install New “Smart” LED Street Lights
Chicago has chosen a Massachusetts-based company to spearhead a project to replace the city’s outdated street lights with new LED “smart” lights. Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office said it will ask the City Council to approve a contract with Ameresco Inc. to replace 270,000 street lights over the next four years. The mayor was scheduled to discuss the contract at a Tuesday afternoon press conference. Chicago Department of Transportation Commissioner Rebekah Scheinfeld said the project would start on the South Side and West Side, in neighborhoods with “heightened public safety concerns,” as well as about a dozen major streets throughout the city.
How to Choose the Right LEDs for Your Home
Lighting is more than just a facet of home decor. It can directly impact your mood, health, sleep patterns and ability to concentrate. This means that the way you light your home needs more careful consideration than what color the lampshade is or whether to choose a pendant or chandelier light fixture. With the recent revolution in the light bulb aisle, choosing the right light for your room has become increasingly complicated. The long-lasting, energy-efficient LED bulbs now dominate, but they bring with them confusion for those of us used to choosing our lighting based on watts. From lumens to kelvins, bright white to warm white, there are now many more decisions to be made when buying a light bulb

LED Lighting for Self-Storage Facilities: Benefits, Products and Partners
Self-storage owners and managers are continually seeking ways to increase their profit and harness their operating costs. One way is to use energy-efficient lighting, specifically LEDs. This type of lighting benefits the self-storage industry in many ways. LEDs offer exceptional light quality at a fraction of the cost of traditional lighting and are 80 percent more efficient than traditional light bulbs, with an exponentially longer lifespan. By not needing to replace lights so frequently, facility operators save on electricity bills and maintenance costs. The illumination upgrade also means increased visibility—an important factor in employee and customer safety—as well as increased market appeal.
LEDs mean cheaper, more efficient lighting for towns
How many workers, and how long does it take to replace 5,000 street lights? Well, let's put it this way: Last month, White Plains and the New York Power Authority started a $3.6 million project to replace all of old high-pressure sodium lights in the city with new LED bulbs. On any given day, weather-permitting, up to four two-member crews are out on city streets, replacing lights. They expect to finish by July.

Google Assistant can now control LIFX, TP-Link, Vivint, and Best Buy Insignia devices
A smart home hub, like the Google Home, is only useful if it can actually control your smart home stuff. The Google Home only shipped with a handful of supported devices and services, but over the past few months, that has expanded a great deal. In addition to the Wink devices we covered earlier, Google Assistant (and thus, the Google Home) now works with LIFX, TP-Link, Vivint, and Best Buy Insignia smart home products. Let's start with Best Buy Insignia, which is the company's own line of tech products. You're probably familiar with the Insignia TVs or tablets, but only the Insignia Wi-Fi smart plug is compatible (for now). Just like similar products from TP-Link and WeMo, this is pretty much just an outlet you can turn on or off remotely.
IKEA launches its own low-cost smart lighting range
For many people, their first foray into the world of home automation begins with lighting. There's a good reason for this: smart bulbs easily fit into existing furnishings and can be operated using just a smartphone, which (mostly) everybody now owns. Philips, with its Hue range, is perhaps the most well known smart bulb maker, but that could soon change thanks to a new entrant: IKEA. That's right, the world's biggest furniture chain is today debuting its own smart lighting range in the UK. As you'd expect, the prices are a lot easier on the wallet.
