Casino puts odds on LEDs

“We wanted a first-class facility that mixed outside light coming in the windows with the internal lighting to make its tone as close to natural as possible for our guests,” said Kara Fox-LaRose, president and general manager of the casino. Illumination from LEDs approaches natural light tones. From the beginning, the gaming architects at the Friedmutter Group planned energy-saving LED fixtures in the nearly 370,000-square-foot building and in the vast parking lot. LED lighting fits the Cowlitz Tribe’s emphasis on sustainability and conservation of resources, explained Fox-Larose. So, in tandem, Swinterton Builders, the general contractor, Clark Public Utilities and the tribe worked to explore lighting efficiency options.

BlinkBox: Debugging Tool For Addressable LEDs

How often do you find yourself having to pause a project to make a test circuit or write some test code to find the source of a problem? Do enough variations of the same test and you’ll eventually make a dedicated test tool. That’s just what Devon Bray found himself doing. He does a lot of work with addressable LEDs of different types and after much experience, created the BlinkBox, a dedicated test tool for addressable LEDs. It supports multiple LED chipsets, you can give it a count of the LEDs you want to light up, and you can choose a test animation.

REBELLED LED lights have an IP69K military grade rating, which means that they can withstand intense elements, including water, dust, heat, and pressure. They’re also the made using industry-renowned Cree LEDs, which means they’re both long lasting and extremely bright. In addition to trucks, REBELLED lights can be used on ATVs, motorcycles, construction equipment, boats, and law enforcement and auxiliary vehicles.

Make Your Dumb Lights Smarter

Much to my family's chagrin, I'm on a mission to change every light in our house into smart lights. While in my mind, the result is a perfectly behaved voice-response lighting system that I can trigger with an Alexa command, the reality is less successful. Every new bulb has its own app. Some lights have bridges to install. Some work perfectly with Alexa, others react oddly to common commands. Then there are the track lights in the kitchen and the chandelier in the dining room, both of which use bulbs for which there simply aren't smart replacements. For those, what I need is to not replace the bulbs, but find a way to make the switch smarter (which would be helpful since Alexa often ignores my wife's commands and she ends up using the wall switch anyway).

CFL bulbs start to dim as LEDs take over

In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Ujala scheme to promote energy efficient lighting in houses through light-emitting diodes or LEDs. Following this move, prices of LED bulbs nosedived to almost Rs 70-80 apiece from Rs 150-160 earlier. Simultaneously, demand (and production) for compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) fell significantly since consumers and consequently manufacturers switched to LEDs. In other words, CFL is in its twilight hours. From 1998, when these bulbs first came into the market as an alternative to incandescent bulbs, rapid innovation in 10 years meant that they were better alternatives to CFLs.

Samsung’s 34-foot LED TV looks to change movie theaters forever

For over a century, movie projector technology remained relatively unchanged: Frames of film, spun in front of a bright lamp to project an image onto a screen. More recently, though, projection has taken quantum leaps forward, including the arrival of digital projection in 1999, and in the last few years, laser light-powered projectors.

That wasn’t good enough for the folks at Samsung, though. With relatively little fanfare, the TV titan has unveiled a revolutionary new way to make movie magic, without the need for projectors at all. Samsung calls its new creation “Onyx,” and it’s poised to change everything we know about going to the movies.

Cree's new LED is its most basic bulb ever -- and it's great

Originally a manufacturer of LED components, Cree first caught my attention back in 2014 after the North Carolina-based company started selling light bulbs of its own. That first generation of Cree LEDs performed well in our tests and didn't cost as much as the competition. But that was then -- these days, most of the competition has caught up to Cree's low-cost strategy, and some have even surpassed it. That's why it's no surprise that Cree's newest flagship bulb, a 60-watt replacement LED that sells in a two-pack at Home Depot for about $8, is its most affordable yet.
