Acclaim Lighting bathes iconic Radio Flyer facility with colorful LED beams

Acclaim Lighting has released details of a dynamic LED color façade lighting project at the Radio Flyer company headquarters on West Grand Avenue in Chicago, IL. The company long known for its bright-red kids’ wagons can now make its facility appear equally bright red, day or night, alongside the giant replica wagon just outside the front door. Acclaim supplied the solid-state lighting (SSL) products to a team including JR Lighting Design, Gensler Architects, Leopardo Construction, and Grand Kahn Electric. Radio Flyer sought to revamp its headquarters, which had been a brick-clad building, in a way that more closely matched the sleek and colorful wagons, scooters, bikes, and other ride-on products that it produces.

This Smart Remote Controls Your Home Lamps

Sometimes technology can initially seem like overkill. Even when it’s really good stuff. Take for example, the new Caséta by Lutron Wireless Lamp Dimmer Kit with Smart Bridge remote system that lets you control your plug-in lamps. I was able to test it out for a desk lamp in my home that happens to sit right next to our bed on a nightstand. But for the sake of testing Caséta, I connected this desk lamp to it. The system is designed to make things easier by giving you a wireless remote that you can use to dim the light, flip it on, or turn it off. Mind you, we can currently just reach up from our pillow and switch the light off.

Signify unveils some 20 new Hue models

Signify, the world’s largest lighting company and until recently called Philips, will show some 21 new Hue products at the IFA consumer electronics and home appliance show in Berlin, which runs from Aug. 31 through Sept. 6. Hue is Signify’s brand of LED bulbs, strips, and luminaires designed to change color and CCT to suit different moods and occasions. Not that Hue is miles away from the “data and Internet” strategy that today defines the push by both Signify and the solid-state lighting (SSL) industry to equip the lighting infrastructure with chips and sensors that collect data transmitted via the Internet. After all, Hue lights tend to be controllable by Internet-connected apps, and thus have data-collecting implications.

The colourful LED bulbs are being used on an experimental basis at P G Palya wildlife zone to keep wild animals including pachyderms, at bay. PG Palya wildlife zone is a dense forest area and houses tigers, elephants and other wild animals,

Electrically Safe LED-to-Lamp Converter

Compared to an ordinary lamp most traditional LEDs are weak when it comes to light emission.  That’s okay for many purposes, but sometimes you want a big lamp instead of a measly LED. This 'light booster' as you might call it is used for switching a mains powered incandescent lamp on and off by means of a tiny LED in an opto-isolator available at the input of the circuit. This LED should take the place of the LED you want to “beef up” in terms of light emission.

Fed up with Wi-fi? Li-fi technology turns light bulbs into smart devices that transmit data

Fed up with Wi-fi? Li-fi technology turns light bulbs into smart devices that transmit data – and it is in homes already. Olivia Qiu, chief innovation officer at Signify (the new company name of Philips Lighting), compares Li-fi, a two-way, high-speed wireless technology, to Wi-fi, but says it uses light waves instead of radio waves to transmit data. Within the stream of light from the overhead luminaire, a broadband connection is highly secure, and provides a connection with a speed of 30Mb per second without compromising lighting quality. “While radio frequencies are becoming congested, the visible light spectrum is an untapped resource with a large bandwidth suitable for the stable simultaneous connection of a vast array of Internet of Things devices,” she says.

Current partnered with Boulder, CO-based Energy Resources Inc., which specializes in installing and designing lighting and lighting control systems.

LEDs illuminate new options in office lighting

For years, the choices in office lighting were pretty limited. Four-foot or 2-foot fluorescent lights in square or rectangular fixtures are a common sight. So, too, are long, suspended, continuous runs of the same lights. “Those are basically practical lighting solutions that were designed around existing sources,” said Rick Meyer, vice president of sales and marketing at Mequon-based manufacturer SPI Lighting Inc. Meyer pointed out the technology behind lighting had not changed much from the time Thomas Edison invented the light bulb until the introduction of fluorescent lights. Even after that, things did not rapidly evolve.

Smart lighting troubles show why the connected home of the future is still a myth

Nanoleaf makes light panels, at the moment in the shape of triangles, but later this year in the shape of squares and, early next year, hexagons, which home and office owners can join together to create huge lighting displays, with colours that swirl around in time with music (the panels have microphones) or that match a theme. Place the 12-sided remote on side number "1", your lights come on. Side "12", the lights go off. Other sides change the colour themes. But it's more than just a remote, it's a tacit acknowledgement that apps are rarely the best way to control smart-home devices – "who wants to reach for their phone, wait for the app to load and then use it to turn on their lights?" asks Yan.

Holland’s newest red-light district is a big boost for bats

Kamiel Spoelstra has 1.5 million recordings of bat sounds. Spoelstra and his team of scientists at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) made them, in order to analyze the effect of outdoor artificial light on the nocturnal creatures. Starting in 2011 they mounted microphones and memory cards on trees near specially-tuned LED lightposts they installed at eight different sites in the Netherlands. Spoelstra’s ultrasonic equipment would pick up the high-frequency bat calls that are inaudible to human ears but that sound out at deafening decibels that put Iron Maiden to shame.

EU halogen light bulb ban: everything you need to know

Halogen light bulbs will soon be a thing of the past, as the final phase of EU energy regulations comes into effect on 1 September 2018, banning them from sale. Halogen GU10 spotlights have already been banned – in 2016 – but halogen bulbs got a stay of execution as manufacturers argued that LEDs weren’t yet a viable replacement due to higher upfront costs, particularly for the brighter 60-100W-equivalent bulbs. That’s set to change, as the ban on importing or producing new halogen bulbs comes into force on 1 September.

Scientists are learning more about the adverse health affects of LEDs

A new study aims to provide some guidelines for the use of LED lights, which are quickly taking over the global lighting market but are known to create serious problems for wildlife and people.
“LEDs are a major focus of this paper because they are replacing existing outdoor lighting at a rapid pace and that is changing the nature of the outdoor environment in a way that is not going to be stopped,” says Travis Longcore of the University of Southern California. By 2020, LED lights are projected to account for 69 percent of the global market, a dramatic increase from nine percent just seven years ago. “LEDs are coming, but we can perhaps guide some of the ways in which they're used and the choices that are made relative to wildlife, because the color of light matters to wildlife," Longcore says. "It also matters to people and the circadian rhythms of life on Earth.”

Casino puts odds on LEDs

Most of us think only a little about how light affects our environment. If we do, we simply switch on a light here or there and change bulbs occasionally as needed. The designers of the ilani casino, however, took this process several steps further. They faced highly complex interior lighting issues covering thousands of square feet of gaming areas, restaurants, lounges, bars, retail space and a large meeting room. “We wanted a first-class facility that mixed outside light coming in the windows with the internal lighting to make its tone as close to natural as possible for our guests,” said Kara Fox-LaRose, president and general manager of the casino. Illumination from LEDs approaches natural light tones.

Is the marvel of LED lighting also a blight on global health?

Pollution is often characterized as a soft issue in environmentalism. This perception needs to change. Light at night constitutes a massive assault on the ecology of the planet, including us. It also has indirect impacts because, while 20% of electricity is used for lighting worldwide, at least 30% of that light is wasted. Wasted light serves no purpose at all, and excessive lighting is too often used beyond what is needed for driving, or shopping, or Friday-night football. In response to this relentless attack on night, the American Medical Association (AMA) stepped up and adopted an official policy statement in 2016. I was one of the co-authors of the AMA statement, in which my colleagues and I recommended reducing the brightness and blue content of the LED products being deployed by utilities around the country.

Audi’s HD Matrix LED lights may soon be allowed on US roads

Headlights typically serve one purpose -- helping drivers see the road. To illuminate the asphalt at night the lights traditionally had two settings. Low beams for driving around town and passing other vehicles or high beams for seeing more of the road and surrounding area. That's pretty much all we've had for decades. While cars in the United States still operate like this, in other parts of the world -- thanks to technology -- lights have evolved. Currently, on your US-spec car there are the usual two high/low beam options coming out of two bulbs usually housed in the same element. There are better systems out there. For example, Audi's new HD Matrix LED with Audi Laser light.

Only 23% of consumers did not do any research before purchasing lighting. Thirty-four percent of consumers researched online exclusively, while 32% researched both online and in store. Only 11% of lighting consumers researched entirely in store before buying. The most popular source for information, among both online and in-store researchers, were retailers’ websites, reported by 74% of respondents. Marketplace websites, such as Amazon and Overstock, were employed by 63% of consumers.

Tridonic files suit against distributor

Tridonic Jennersdorf GmbH, a subsidiary of Tridonic GmbH & Co KG and part of the Austria-based Zumtobel Group, has announced the filing of a lawsuit against German distributor Ingram Micro Distribution GmbH. The suit focuses on LED intellectual property (IP) owned by the B.O.S.E. Consortium of which Tridonic is a part, and LEDs used in HTC smartphones. Tridonic targeted S-KON eKontor24 for selling HTC smartphones with LEDs that infringed the patent for using yellow silicate phosphors with blue LEDs to yield white light. Tridonic said a Munich court affirmed Tridonic’s arguments and subsequently the parties settled the matter, presumably in Tridonic’s favor.

How To: Remove a Broken Light Bulb

Incandescent light bulbs are known to occasionally shatter in their fixtures—and when they do, it’s both difficult and dangerous to extract the bulb’s threaded base from the socket. Bits of broken glass and the risk of electrical shock should make anyone think twice before attempting to take out what remains of the bulb. Luckily, there’s a number of strategies for how to remove a broken light bulb without using your hands, and you’ll likely have at least one of these three tools on hand: a pair of needle nose pliers, a raw potato, or a commercially-sold broken bulb extractor.

Will Trump’s DOE Propose To Roll Back Light Bulb Standards?

The Trump administration will soon release a proposed rule on light bulb standards. The details are under wraps, but manufacturers have lobbied for an illegal rollback of strong standards with which they must comply beginning in 2020. Our new issue brief shows what’s at stake. Few energy efficiency success stories are bigger than the national light bulb standards. Enacted by the US Congress and President Bush in 2007, they are delivering huge savings for consumers and the environment. They helped spur the investments and market changes that have resulted in the low-cost, high-quality LEDs (light emitting diodes) that are now widely available.

Liquid to Air: Pneumatic Objects is currently on display at the Patrick Parrish Gallery at 50 Lispenard Street in Manhattan through August 26. The Self-Assembly Lab team, consisting of Björn Sparrman, Schendy Kernizan, Jared Laucks, and Skylar Tibbits, were able to “draw” the malleable objects using rapid liquid printing. The experimental process is a collaboration between the lab and furniture company Steelcase and can be used to rapidly print large-scale products in a variety of materials.

Networked lighting to eliminate auto blind spots

It is a horror scenario for every driver: Suddenly, a previously invisible pedestrian comes out of the dark between two street lights or the shade of two parked cars. Researchers at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) are working on a method to optimally adapt car headlights to local conditions.

When lighting conditions blur the contrast between an object and its surroundings, experts refer to it as the "camouflage effect." The human eye cannot perceive the object under these conditions. The same applies to camera eyes of autonomous vehicles. The "Propix" headlight developed at KIT's Light Technology Institute (LTI) a few years ago was the point of departure of the scientists. Propix can adapt its light distribution to the environment, i.e. suppress certain areas completely, whereas others are illuminated brightly.

New Willis Tower antenna lights can change color in a matter of seconds

The iconic twin antennae atop Chicago’s Willis Tower can now display a wider variety of colors as well as intricate animations thanks to a newly installed quick-change lighting system. While in the past a two-person crew had to climb to the skyscraper’s 109th and 110th floors and swap color pallets over each individual floodlight by hand, the upgraded LED array can change its hue remotely and in just a matter of seconds. By comparison, the previous process could take up to four hours and hinged on favorable weather conditions. In addition to saving the time, hassle, and risks associated with manually changing the colors, the new system is expected to reduce antenna lighting-related energy consumption by 70 percent.
