LEDs Are Increasing Light Pollution, Not Fixing It
Switching off street lights to save money and energy could have a positive knock-on effect on our nocturnal pollinators, according to new research. A study, led by experts from Newcastle and York universities, has shown that turning off the lights even for just part of the night is effective at restoring the natural behaviour of moths. The important role moths play in the pollination of plants - potentially even including key food crops such as peas, soybean and oilseed rape - is often overlooked. But recent studies show that moths supplement the day-time work of bees and other pollinating insects. Night-lighting disrupts nocturnal pollination by attracting moths upwards, away from the fields and hedgerows so they spend less time feeding and therefore pollinating. But in this latest study, published today in /Ecosphere/, the team found there was no difference in pollination success between part-night lighting and full darkness.
New LED lights will be coming to illuminate the Acosta Bridge
You may remember the old blue neon lights that used to brighten up the Acosta Bridge. Those lights were installed in 1999 with the expansion of theSkyway across the St. Johns River. But the blue lights haven't illuminated the bridge since 2015 when workers found problems with the wiring of the lights. The new color-changing LED system costs $2.6 million and will be installed by Miller Electric, said John Finotti spokesman for JTA. He said the new system will allow for changing the lights' colors for special events like holidays and Jaguars games (Photo: Gregory Urbano)

Weather delays WF LED light conversion project
City of Wichita Falls officials said weather has delayed their LED light conversion project. Last summer, city workers began to convert 5,700 streets with LED bulbs. So far, 45 percent is complete which includes all residential neighborhoods. Larry Wilkinson, the city’s traffic attendant, said the weather has delayed work on the city’s busiest roads. “The ground is so saturated there’s just some things that we have a hard time getting to because the ground is saturated," Wilkinson said. “If we go in there and try to do that, it could be a safety hazard or cause more problems we can repair. Being able to reach the high mass lights with bucket trucks, you have to be careful there so you don’t sink in there in the mud and create a bigger problem." (Photo: Travis K. Witt).
Osram warns of a weak first quarter as it cuts jobs
With no let-up in sight to the financial strains of transforming its business model, of relying on a soft automotive market, and of dealing with global trade wars, Osram warned that its 2019 first quarter will be weak when it reports results in two weeks. It also announced job cuts. In a short statement, the Munich-based company said that operating revenue would fall by 15% on a comparable basis, from €939 million ($107M) in October through December quarter a year ago to €828M ($945M) in its new fiscal year. Osram also warned that its adjusted EBITDA margin will likely take about a 40% hit, coming in at 11.3% compared to 18.5% a year ago.

This Lamp That Doesn’t Cast Shadows
There is a Japanese lamp that doesn't cast shadows or cause glare. Ever walk into a friend's home and shutter in disbelief at the fact that they were using "cool white" bulbs instead of "warm white"? Gasp in horror whenever someone uses lamps in the middle of a prime natural lighting day? This is the type of news meant for you. The light, which is called The Light, comes from Japanese brand Balmuda. The lamp uses technology that is used in surgeon's lights that doesn't cause shadows. Compared with traditional lamps, it casts a relatively wide area of diffused light. While a lamp with a normal bulb cast light downward with the most intense light being directly underneath, The Light casts its light outward with the intensity more even.

Light bulb repair in Venezuela
Entrepreneurial light bulb technicians help desperate Venezuelans save money by repairing burned-out light bulbs, as the country’s struggling citizens deal with tight budgets during the ongoing crisis in a basket-case economy that has resulted from the type of failed democratic socialism schemes now being promoted in the US by Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Sanders (“free” everything, high taxes on the rich, government control of the economy, universal jobs guarantee, housing as a human right, Medicare for all, “free” college, etc.).
New York celebrates legalizing abortion until birth by lighting One World Trade Center pink
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) directed that the One World Trade Center's spire be lit pink overnight on Tuesday to celebrate his signing of a law allowing abortions until birth and letting non-doctors commit abortions. The law, the Reproductive Health Act, also erases the state’s recognition of preborn babies older than 24 weeks as potential homicide victims.

Employees say lighting affects their productivity
An overwhelming 77% of respondents in a British survey felt that lighting in the workplace can affect their productivity, with 33% saying that access to natural light is important and 32% saying they would be happy to work under artificial light that is designed to aid productivity. The survey results suggest that whatever lighting’s direct biological effects are, humans at least psychologically react to illumination. While a direct link to productivity has probably not yet been absolutely proven, anecdotal evidence and common sense strongly suggests that when a workforce is happier with lighting conditions, it is also more inclined to produce.

Infrared Therapy versus LED Therapy
Light therapy is one of the oldest modalities used to treat a variety of health conditions. The use of coherent light sources (like lasers) and non-coherent light sources (like light emitting diodes or LEDs) have opened new avenues in medical sciences. These light therapies have been used to treat a variety of medical conditions. Infrared therapy involves the use of infrared radiation to produce local heat; whereas LED therapy is a non-thermal therapy used in a variety of dermatological processes, and wound healing.
Illuminating the future of interior lighting
About four years ago, the French brand Blackbody lit the way to innovation at the Maison et Objet trade show in Paris. An overhead constellation dazzled, in a sinuous composition of staggered-height OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes). It was unlike what designers had seen before, intended to be experiential. Then, in 2016, another installation showed the capabilities of bendable light, which was applied like irregular pieces of stone or wallcovering against a black ground. Bolstered by such impressive installations, lighting has moved into the worlds of theater and even art. At the SOFA (Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design) show in Chicago in November, artist Anthony James created the 5-foot Portal, a polyhedron with 20 faces, fitted with LED tubes illuminating mirrors within, giving the illusion of infinity.

5 winning LED-carwash combos
As the cost of LED lights has declined, more and more carwashes have been incorporating them into their sites. LEDs not only prove more efficient and cost-effective in the long run, but they can also make a site “pop” out through a strategic use of lighting effects and color. Today’s leading carwashes have figured out that there are five critical ways to use LEDs that resonate with customers: in signage, at entry/exit areas, for package confirmation, on equipment and in the vacuum area. This article explores each of these areas in detail.
A Novel Design for Gallium Nitride LEDs Could Lead to Brighter, More Efficient Displays
Small display screens, like the ones needed for AR, VR, and other head-up displays, may soon become way more efficient and yield unprecedented resolution, thanks to a new kind of transistor made from vertically oriented gallium nitride nanowires. GaN micro-LEDs are more desirable than today’s commercial designs in almost every way. For instance, each pixel on the screen of the iPhone X is created by a collection of organic LEDs, which are much bigger in size than nanowire GaN LEDs, resulting in larger pixel sizes. What’s more, to control the color of each pixel, commercial devices rely on relatively bulky thin-film transistors (TFTs), whereas GaN LEDs can be designed to produce a color directly—and emit that color at 100 to 1,000 times the brightness and with at least double the efficiency.

Once the lighting retrofits are completed, the federal customers expect to cut their annual energy usage for lighting by approximately 50% per facility. Although the enterprise-grade LED lighting and energy project solutions company did not specify which two US government facilities will be retrofitted, Orion did say they are replacing legacy T5, T8, compact fluorescent and HID lighting systems with energy-efficient LED lighting platforms and controls.
Fairfax County now accepting LED bulbs for recycling at waste sites
Fairfax County’s Department of Public Works and Environmental Services is offering a new recycling option for Light-emitting Diode (LED) bulbs, which can contain hazardous substances such as lead, nickel, silver, copper and arsenic. LEDs are not currently accepted in the regular blue-bin curbside recycling stream. However, “to promote environmental sustainability practices,” Fairfax County residents can now recycle those LEDs by dropping them off at the County’s I-66 transfer station in Fairfax and the I-95 landfill site in Lorton. There is no fee.

Corsair shrunk the RGB LED down to be as small as the head of a pin
Corsair brought a new RGB LED technology to the show. In the space where you could previously fit four regular LEDs, you can now accommodate one hundred Corsair Capellix lights. The Capellix are up to 60 percent brighter, 60 percent more efficient, and require up to 40 percent less power than existing RGB LEDs. Their space-saving is huge: current LEDs require an assembly that makes each one occupy a space roughly the size of a fingernail, 2.8mm cubed, whereas the Capellix stuff is stripped down to a shockingly tiny 0.2mm cubed.
Lift your winter mood with these lighting ideas
Lighting alters more than the aesthetic appeal of your home — it can affect your mood as well. Studies show that we are deeply influenced by our home lighting choices. Fortunately, there are several ways light can help with common problems. Waking up without a cup of coffee is always a little bit tricky. But if you find yourself feeling overly sluggish in the morning, it could be because your sleeping pattern is off its natural cycle. Investing in a circadian lighting system may help you get back on track. No matter which new lighting scheme you decide to try out, it’s important to make sure your home finishes work with your design. Installing natural light won’t help much if you decorate with dark paint colors and espresso floors.

Brooklyn schools slash $4k in expenses monthly by installing LED bulbs
As Brooklyn looks to take its school buildings off of the grid by going solar, school officials are touting smaller changes that have resulted in lower energy costs for the district. Swapping out the old bulbs throughout the district’s campus for low energy LEDs has lowered monthly energy costs by $4,000. Rather than contracting with a third party such as Eversource, which offers programs to upgrade lighting and other infrastructure to improve energy efficiency, the campus’s facilities director set to changing out each of the 5,000 bulbs in the school buildings in-house. It’s why Brooklyn is already reaping the financial benefits. The utility takes a fee upfront to perform the service, but municipalities and other customers save on their electric bills in the long run.
Use lighting to improve your mood
Lighting alters more than the aesthetic appeal of your home — it can affect your mood as well. Studies show that we are deeply influenced by our home lighting choices. Light that is too blue, bright or artificial can have a negative impact on your health. If you struggle with lying awake at night or feeling exhausted during the day, you may want to rethink your home lighting. Luckily, there are several solutions. If your emotions tend to get the best of you, installing dimmer switches around your home could help. Studies show that bright light intensifies your emotions, while lower light can keep your feelings at a steady level. Give yourself the option to move between the two without sacrificing bright overhead light when you need it.

LED lights making dent in UK energy demand
Installing a single low-energy LED bulb may make a trivial contribution to cutting the carbon emissions that are overheating the planet. But if millions choose LEDs, then with a twist of the collective wrist, their efforts will make a small but significant dent in the UK's energy demand. Studies show making products more efficient has - along with other factors - already been slightly more effective than renewable energy in cutting CO2 emissions. The difference is that glamorous renewables grab the headlines.
