Recent Progress in High Brightness LED Technology and Applications

The High Brightness Light Emitting Diode (HB LED) market is exploding as unit shipments continue their upward growth, according to new research. LEDs are creating a niche market for conventional suppliers of semiconductor processing tools. Markets for HB LEDs, backlight LEDs, and OLEDs are forecast.

Solid-state lighting (SSL), particularly light-emitting diode (LED) based SSL, is on course to become the dominant technology across all lighting applications. The luminous efficacy of SSL has surpassed previous lighting technologies and still has significant room to improve, and the price has decreased to the point where it is no longer a barrier to adoption for consumers. The LED technology platform also offers the opportunity to advance beyond legacy form factors, which embody the limitations of the previous lighting technologies; to move past the legacy functionality of providing basic illumination; and to enable energy savings beyond improved source efficiency to encompass more precise delivery of more suitable light at the appropriate time.

This explosion of applications is driven by two main directions: the ability to produce very small GaN LEDs (micro-LEDs and nano-LEDs) with high efficiency and across large areas, in combination with the possibility to merge optoelectronic-grade GaN micro-LEDs with silicon microelectronics in a hybrid approach. GaN LED technology is now even spreading into the realm of display technology, which has been occupied by organic LEDs and liquid crystal displays for decades. In this review, the technological transition toward GaN micro- and nanodevices beyond lighting is discussed including an up-to-date overview on the state of the art.

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) represent an area of SSL technology that can create diffuse light sources with direct emitters that are thin profile and bendable. This technology can produce new form factors and lighting design flexibility not available with today's LEDs or traditional lighting technology.

Lamp plus mosquito killing design aesthetic way to stat itch-free

It’s safe to say that mosquitoes are probably one of the most disliked species of bugs in existence today. Mosquito spray and bug zappers stock the shelves of convenience and grocery stores during the warmer seasons, with the latter solution being the most popular option. After rendering their take on the bug zapper, PUURFUN LIN produced a mosquito killer lamp visual design that’s stylish in appearance and effective in purpose.

The finished design is sleek, contemporary, and suitable for either indoor or outdoor spaces. Inspired by expandable lanterns and handheld lamps, this take on the bug zapper is as chic as it is reliable and resembles a minuscule, cyborg, silent assassin. Doubling as a lamp, this device provides enough lighting for an evening spent outside on the porch or one spent inside, reading a book with the windows open. In addition to the design’s light features, it also zaps bugs. Mosquitoes are irresistibly attracted to the lamp’s ultraviolet light rays, which then brings them to the device’s killing snare.

As the mosquitoes fly closer towards the ultraviolet light, a killing entrapment takes care of the pest so summer nights can carry on without worry. This portable mosquito killer lamp fits in nicely amongst other household objects as its shape, structure, and color scheme is subdued and unassuming, but attractive and minimal in its presentation. Being that this design is both a lamp and a mosquito trap, the final product is wireless and portable, making it easy to transfer from place to place.

Research on lighting system could help reduce deer collisions

Deer may be disoriented by vehicle headlights and do not immediately recognize cars, according to a new study. Thus, cars become something of a high speed predator that deer fail to flee from until it’s too late.

The new study focuses on a lighting system for the car that illuminates a larger portion of the vehicle’s front surface than standard headlights alone. In early work, researchers have found that the new lighting system takes advantage of the deer’s ‘flight behavior,’ or its natural instinct to avoid predators.

LEDs tailored at specific wavelengths reveal otherwise hidden or difficult to detect information

Ultraviolet (UV), red, green, and blue lighting can also often reveal more information than provided by white light.

LED lighting provides illumination across all these wavelengths and thus accommodates a wide range of inspection types. If samples present multiple types of defects, each most easily detected by a different wavelength than other defects, simultaneous use of multiple LEDs tuned to different wavelengths may prove useful.

Foodstuff and beverage packaging can cover a wide range of materials, types, and sizes, each of which may have optimal wavelengths of light for inspection applications.

Impurities Enhance Polymer LED efficiencies

New research published in EPJ B reveals that the higher-than-expected efficiency of PLEDs can be reached through interactions between triplet excitons, and impurities embedded in their polymer layers, LEDinside reports.

Polymer LEDs (PLEDs) are devices containing single layers of luminescent polymers, sandwiched between two metal electrodes. They produce light as the metal layers inject electrons and holes into the polymer, creating distortions which can combine to form two different types of electron-hole pair: either light-emitting ‘singlets,’ or a non-emitting ‘triplets.’
