Micro-LED - Lighting the Way for Display Technologies

Micro-LED technology has been exciting the trade and consumer tech press for several years now, particularly since 2014 when Apple purchased the micro-LED-focused start-up, LuxeVue. The implication that leading tech firms were racing to incorporate micro-LED in their highly desirable consumer tech prompted a flurry of speculation that micro-LED would be the 'next big thing' in TVs, smartphones, wearables and much more.

That hasn't happened – yet. But in the past few years the likes of Sony, LG and Samsung have demonstrated large-scale micro-LED screens, while other firms have brought various micro-LED prototypes to market, and still more have expressed plans to do so.

The size and nature of micro-LEDs convey several advantages when used in display screens. Their color gamut is superb, with perfect blacks and brightness above 1 million nits. A micro-LED screen can be exceptionally thin, with resolution as high as 6,000 PPI, and has a wide viewing angle. What is more, micro-LED screens have a long lifespan, can be flexible and/or transparent, and can incorporate sensor technologies (such as biometric sensors to unlock the screen in a smartphone display).

Furthermore, unlike traditional LED screens which are huge and visibly lose resolution as the viewer gets closer, micro-LED displays retain their sharpness regardless. In addition, they can be used in a wide range of screen sizes (in other words, they are eminently scalable). Figure 1 illustrates the capabilities of micro-LED displays vis-à-vis other display technologies.

LED driver market is expected to register a CAGR of 29.28%

The LED driver market is expected to register a CAGR of 29.28% during the forecast period (2020 - 2025). LED drivers have become the bottleneck of LED lighting, both in terms of size and reliability.

They provide fundamental advantages for LED lighting with smaller form factors, higher reliability, and improved efficiency over the dimming curve. The increasing energy-efficient policies by the federal government and councils across the countries have deliberately motivated the investments in energy-efficient practices and technologies.

The display devices, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and television, have widely adopted LED backlighting systems due to their low power consumption, and small and thin packing ability. Despite their wide adoption, the manufacturers are continuing to invest in backlighting systems to enhance the user experience.

The residential market demand for the solutions is significant; according to the US Energy Department, there were at least 500 million recessed downlights installed in the US homes, and over 20 million are sold each year. Owing to this, the demand for drivers from the segment are expected to increase significantly over the coming years.

Visa Lighting Launches New Rae Pendant

Wisconsin manufacturer Visa Lighting has released a new pendant family called Rae. This linear design utilizes its extremely compact linear form with a full-length, diffuse light source for direct illumination applications.

The Rae family includes models of 4, 6, and 8-foot nominal lengths, with the option for custom lengths in increments of 11 inches. The cross-section is a mere 1.375” wide and 1.25” high and the luminaire produces 375-750 lumens per foot, depending on the output level specified. Designers can choose a remote driver or a surface canopy driver.

This pendant can be used as primary lighting throughout an office environment, or even arranged randomly as a large cluster to create a statement piece in a foyer space.

New Muse Glass Pendant from Visa Lighting Features a Unique Optical Effect

The Muse design utilizes a light source that appears to float inside the glass. This design allows light to project onto the reflective white inner surface of the globe, illuminating the orb. An echo of the upper dome is reflected in the transparent lower globe, creating an eye-catching ring of light that moves with the viewer.

Even with these reflections the true light source is still not revealed, resulting in a pleasant, glare-free experience. The positioning of each component has been tailored to create the desired effect without revealing any exposed diodes from outside the luminaire.

The Muse pendant is appropriate for spaces such as reception desks, private offices, conference rooms, restaurant and cafe spaces, as well as foyer or lobby areas. Depending on the chosen finish and whether the pendant is suspended alone or in multiples, the aesthetic fits minimalist commercial interiors as well as spaces that are more intimate or visually nuanced.

Muse is constructed with an 8”-diameter glass globe, a spun aluminum top cap finished white on its inside, and an inner source disk finished to match the outer cap. The metal cap and source disk can be finished with any of Visa Lighting’s extensive standard or custom powder coat finish options, or their exclusive eco-friendly alternative metal finishes for a premium look. The pendant is suspended via charcoal linen covered power cord.

LightKeeper Pro Hotline to hit milestone as LED Keepers are sold in all Home Depot stores for the first time

Since 1996, anyone with a technical problem with their Christmas lights has been able to contact the LightKeeper Pro Hotline by calling 888-ULTA-LIT (888-858-2548) or emailing inform@ultalit.com to be put in touch with an expert in lighting.

The LightKeeper Pro Hotline comes courtesy of LightKeeper Pro, the tool set that fixes most incandescent Christmas light failures. The Cool Yule Tool sends a pulse through the light set, finds the bad bulb, performs a mini-weld and therefore activates the shunt—allowing the light set to work properly. Those with LED Christmas lights can opt for LED Keeper, the only kit able to diagnose and repair LED light sets.

To date, over 6 million units of LightKeeper Pro and LED Keeper have been sold. The reach of these tools continues to grow: starting this year, LED Keeper will be sold at Home Depot stores across the country. The LED Keeper is additionally available at Ace Hardware, Amazon, Menards, and other fine retailers. The LightKeeper Pro is sold almost everywhere light sets are sold - in addition to those retailers mentioned above, it is available at Canadian Tire, Hobby Lobby, Target, True Value, Walmart, and many more.

Christmas Tree Lighting Tips

Measure: When planning the number of lights you will need for your tree, estimate at least 100 mini lights for every foot of tree height.
Decide Between LED vs. Incandescent: LEDs are more expensive than incandescent lights, but do last longer. When it comes to energy usage, a tree with 1,000 incandescent lights can cost $10 over an average holiday season while the  tree using 1,000 LEDs costs less than $1.50.
Consider Indoor vs. Outdoor: Commercial grade light sets are more reliable for outdoor use because of their durability and thicker insulation.
Inspect: Before stringing lights, check for broken bulbs and sockets, frayed cords, burned out lights and loose connections. For sets with bulb outages, use a tool such as the LightKeeper Pro for incandescent lights. Plug the empty bulb socket into the Socket Connector then squeeze the trigger a few times and most light sets will illuminate within seconds. For LED lights, the LED Keeper can help find and fix the problem.
Connect: You never want for electrical consumption to exceed the 3 amp fuse rating. For example, the average 100 light set consumes 0.34 amps per set. Ten sets wired together would therefore consume 3.4 amps and blow the 3 amp fuses. Review the specifications provided to you.
Stringing: When stringing lights on a tree, it is recommended that you begin at the top with light sets that are plugged into a power source. Any blinking during the stringing process is an indication of light set issues that are either in place now -- or will arise later.
Can all light sets be repaired: No. Blackened bulbs on an incandescent light set are an indication of a light set that's been burned beyond its useful life. Also, resistive PODs which are often built into an LED light set can be defective -- this is  a rare occurrence and a non-repairable problem.
Replace and repair: Occasionally check for any bulbs that aren't working and replace them as soon as possible to get the most of your light sets. Two burned out incandescent bulbs can decrease the lifespan of the light set by 39 percent.

DOS Int'l Korea debuts new LED mask

Light therapy or LED treatments have been around for over 30 years and were used by dermatologists in treating inflammation and post-treatment wound recovery.

The earlier devices were big and heavy, using low- or high-pressure lamps, which can only be used as a clinical device. With LED being manufactured as a light source, it has become lighter and smaller. However, power is still a problem to transform these big clinical devices into at-home devices.

With 2,340 pcs (LED 2,100/IR 240) LED lights built-in the device, the high output LED mask will reach the face uniformly without any blind spots. Unlike the common LED masks that offer in multiple colors, the YouniqueW-SMART focuses on only one function -- anti-aging. Using only red collagen lights, the user can enjoy a wavelength of 633nm that penetrates the dermis and stimulates fibroblasts, inducing the skin cells to produce collagen.

By efficiently converting the blue light emitted from InGaN chips into yellow light and mixing them into white light, classic yellow Y3Al5O12: Ce (YAG) phosphor has proved itself to be the most prominent phosphor in white light emitting diodes (w-LEDs).

However, the color rendering index (CRI) of YAG: Ce-based w-LEDs is usually limited to < 70 and its correlated color temperature (CCT) is often higher than 4000 K for the lack of red component in the emission spectrum.

To improve the light quality: Ce phosphor, a research team from the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Science has fabricated a novel ternary ZrO2-Al2O3-YAG: Ce composite ceramic phosphors recently.

Oregon City Converting 7,000 Street and Park Lights to LED

The City of Medford, Oregon announced recently that the it has entered into a $4 million contract with Ameresco to convert more than 7,000 street lights and park lighting to LED technology. The improvements are being financed by a low-interest loan.

The project will impact approximately 8,000 light fixtures across the City. All city and utility-owned street lights will be converted, as well as additional park and parking lot locations.
