Promising candidates revealed for next-generation LED-based data communications

Light-emitting diode (LED)-based communications techniques allow computing devices, including mobile phones, to communicate with one another by using infrared light. However, LED techniques are underused because in its current state LED transmits data at far slower speeds than other wireless technologies such as light-fidelity (Li-Fi).

In a paper published by Nature Electronics, the researchers from Surrey and Cambridge, along with partners from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, examine how organic semiconductors, colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) and metal halide perovskites (perovskites), can be used in LED-based optical communications systems.

The research team explored efforts to improve the performance and efficiency of these LEDs, and they considered their potential applications in on-chip interconnects and Li-Fi.

New LEDs Can Detect Off Food And Lethal Gases

Your smart device could soon be even smarter with a new infrared light emitting diode (LED) that is ‘tuneable’ to different wavelengths of light.

The University of Melbourne, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the University of California, Berkeley, and the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS) have come up with a device that could identify a suite of gases, potentially including lethal ones, improving the safety of firefighters, miners, the military, and your local plumber.

Infrared (IR) spectrometers are common laboratory equipment that can identify different materials by analysing their infrared signatures, which is invisible to the human eye. Just like an AM radio can be tuned to different frequencies of radio wave, IR spectrometers can be tuned to different wavelengths, giving a broad-spectrum analysis of a gas sample. However, these machines are bulky and expensive and not usually practical to take out of the laboratory and into the field.

The new technology bonds a thin layer of black phosphorus crystals to a flexible, plastic-like substrate, allowing it to be bent in ways that cause the black phosphorus to emit light of different wavelengths essentially creating a tuneable infrared LED that allows for the detection of multiple materials.

The device placed inside a fridge could send a notification that meat is going off. When pointed at a handbag, it could reveal whether the bag is made of real leather or a cheaper substitute.

Current materials that are used for IR photodetectors and light emitting devices can be difficult to manufacture, in large part due to the need for multiple layers of perfectly linked crystals.

Global research results on broad-spectrum lighting strategies for cannabis and food crops

Fluence by OSRAM (Fluence) accounces the results from a series of multiyear global studies analyzing the effects of broad-spectrum white light on cannabis, Merlice tomatoes and bell peppers.

The studies found that while spectrum sensitivity is cultivar-dependent, broad-spectrum lighting strategies—which include green light and other wavelengths largely absent in narrow-band spectra—improved crop yield, morphology and overall performance in selected cultivars when compared to narrow-band spectra with high ratios of red and far-red wavelengths.

The results from our global studies show how effective broad-spectrum white light can be in improving crop performance for many cultivators around the world.

Broad-spectrum strategies are about balance and flexibility in the spectrum itself as well as the overall cultivation approach. While there are certain scenarios in which narrow-band spectra, or pink light, may make sense from an energy efficiency or crop production perspective, the company found that many cultivars simply perform better under broad spectra across the KPIs cultivators care about most: yield, morphology and overall quality.

Global filament LED bulb market is projected to reach US$ 6621.39 million by 2028

According to this report the global filament LED bulb market is projected to reach US$ 6621.39 million by 2028 from US$ 1433.19 million in 2021; it is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 24.4% from 2021 to 2028.

LED light sources such as COB plug patches and integrated high-power LED lamps could only be used as a plane light source in optical devices without lenses. However, the LED filament bulbs have broken this barrier, and the porous metal substrate single crystal welding technology truly realized 360 degrees of solid light source, avoiding the influence of light plus lens effect and optica.
Instead of using traditional blue and green phosphors to raise the brightness in the process, the blue + red chip package is used to create the conventional lighting effect as well as to improve light efficiency and brightness through filament LED bulbs.

Additionally, compared to other LED lamps, LED filament lamps primarily use sapphire substrates and wicks instead of nonrenewable aluminium and nonbiodegradable plastic. As per the present trends, mainstream models are often just 25, 28, 32 chip packages, compared to the same number of common packages, the use of LED chip is also less, resulting in a cheaper overall cost than usual LEDs. The rising awareness about the abovementioned benefits of filament LED bulbs through constant marketing and advertisements campaigns by manufacturers is influencing the adoption of the same for lighting purposes, which contributing to the growth of the market.

The end result is a very low power (just over 1W) spray of decorative points of light than can be left on continuously, as the running costs are virtually nothing.

If desired, the resistor values can be increased to reduce power further for battery powered decorations.

LED Grow Lights Market to Reach $12.32 Bn, Globally

High efficiency and controllability offered by LED grow lights and rise in adoption in vertical farming drive the growth of the global LED grow lights market. However, lack of standardization and high initial investment hinder the market growth. On the other hand, legalization of cannabis presents new opportunities in the coming years.

Production activities of LED grow lights halted due to lockdown implemented across many countries. Moreover, supply chain disruptions and shortage of raw materials presented challenges in production at full capacity.

The demand from application industries such as indoor farming, commercial greenhouse, vertical farming, turf and landscaping, and others lowered down considerably during the lockdown. However, the demand is estimated to grow steadily during post-lockdown as daily activities get back on track.

The ban on import-export activities led to disruptions in the supply chain and the supply-demand gap. As the restrictions are lifted off, the supply chain is expected to be restored.

Based on wattage, the low power segment contributed to the highest share in 2020, holding more than half of the global LED grow lights market, and is estimated to maintain its lead position during the forecast period. This is due to ease in installation and operation as it functions on the basis of plug-and-play. However, the medium power segment is estimated to register the highest CAGR of 32.0% from 2021 to 2030, owing to rise in demand for indoor farming and the need for suitable intensity of light to generate optimum yield.

Germanium-lead perovskite LEDs reduce toxicity

Metal-halide perovskites are a new class of semiconductor materials for LED display and solar-energy harvesting.

However, the best-performing devices are often made from lead (Pb)-based perovskites, whose toxicity may cause potential environmental concerns. To resolve the toxicity problem, an effective method has been the use of tin (Sn) as a partial or full replacement of lead in the perovskite materials. This strategy has been particularly successful for perovskite solar cells.

However, tin-based (including tin-lead) perovskite materials are generally very poor light emitters, causing unsatisfactory performance of tin-based perovskite light-emitting devices (LEDs).

Recently, a research team led by Prof. Di Dawei from the Zhejiang University College of Optical Science and Engineering discovered that by using germanium (Ge), an environmentally friendly group-IV element, to partially substitute lead in the perovskite, it is possible to create highly luminescent perovskite materials and devices.

Factors such as the declining manufacturing cost of LEDs and the growing adoption of energy-efficient lighting technologies will be crucial in driving the growth of the market. But the high average cost per led fixture will restrict the market growth.

The emergence of new technologies will have a positive impact on the growth of vendors. On the other hand, the ban on incandescent bulbs in several countries is expected to reduce the growth potential in the market.

IS31FL375x Family consumes less than 500uA current and comes in small 20-Pin QFN Packages

Lumissil Microsystems, a division of Integrated Silicon Solution, Inc. (ISSI), announced three new LED matrix drivers targeted for a wide range of consumer and industrial applications requiring low power consumption with high LED count.

These drivers have been specifically designed to incorporate the latest technical advances for matrix LED drivers.

They require less than 500µA of operating current, support 12-bit PWM and dot correction for accurate color reproduction in IoT, AI speakers, PC gaming, and other handheld applications.

This family of matrix LED drivers were designed to address the critical challenges of a minimal board space and low power dissipation demanded by today’s IoT devices. They also incorporate spread spectrum and 180-degree phase delay of the outputs to minimize electrical-magnetic interference (EMI). In addition, the family integrates enhanced circuits to detect the condition of the LEDs (open or short) and solve the ‘ghosting’ artifact challenges with LED arrays.

The IS31FL375x family of matrix LED drivers consists of three devices housed in a small 20-pin QFN package. They enable each LED in the array with its own corresponding control and fault status register to provide individual LED color and dimming effects, de-ghosting and fault reporting for enhanced overall system performance, health, and reliability. LED matrix architectures typically experience a “ghosting effect” where an LED remains dimly ON due to a residual charge in the LED array matrix. The IS31FL375x family eliminates this residual charge and therefore eliminates the LED ghosting effect. In addition, LEDs can fail to turn ON due to an LED open or short condition without the knowledge of the system. The IS31FL375x family can monitor the LED array to detect a failed LED within the array and make this information available for the system to access.

UV-Locker is made for industrial and commercial applications including warehouses, distribution centers, offices, schools, law enforcement agencies and similar facilities. Made in America, UV-Locker is constructed of powder-coated steel, features a heavy-duty equipment rack, is stackable, and includes a rear compartment (non-exposed to UVC) to store accessories (e.g. chargers). In comparison to traditional UVC bulbs, UVC LEDs are safer, do not require time to warm up, and have a longer shelf life.

Connect-UV Introduces New UV-C Air Purifiers

Connect-UV’s new line of UV-C Air Purifiers aim to solve the problem of dangerous indoor air quality.

The air purifiers combine HEPA filtration, which can filter down to 0.1 micron, with UV-C light sanitation, which destroys the RNA and DNA of microorganisms. Combined, the two cleaning methods ensure that potentially dangerous viruses, bacteria, fungi, pollen, smoke, and dust are not being circulated in the air.

The Air Purifier Pro Max 5000 can clean up to 5,287 square feet, cycling the air 3.5 times per hour. Both purifiers include UV-C light sanitation, HEPA level 13 filter, an PM2.5 air monitoring system that displays the real time indoor air quality, are wall mountable, include a remote control and ships for free within the United State.

Connect-UV is the dream of 17-year-old entrepreneur Nic Brown, who envisioned a future where phones, personal devices, and the air are cleaned using UV-C light, allowing people to stay connected in a healthier way. Connect-UV was established in 2020 in Scottsdale Arizona.
