'Donald Trump Is Gonna Lose the Lightbulb War'

The absence of lightbulb regulations helps worsen the climate crisis and wastes households money, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. The group has found the use of wasteful incandescent lights is costing Americans nearly $300 million a month in needless electricity bills and releasing 800,000 tons of carbon dioxide over the lifetimes of the inefficient bulbs sold each month.

Trump, however, was not enamored by LED lights while he was in the White House. The former president said that he looks 'better under an incandescent light than these crazy lights that are beaming down,' complaining in 2019 that he 'always looks orange' under LED lights.

The DOE has consistently found, however, that installing LED bulbs in light fixtures can save people hundreds of dollars over the lifetime of the bulbs.

Bridgelux Expands its F90 Series into Residential Applications Providing High Quality Light and Leading Efficacy for Common Lamp Types

Bridgelux announces its expansion from commercial to residential applications for F90, its popular CRI 90 product. A licensing agreement with GE Lighting, a Savant Company, for its Potassium Fluorosilicate (PFS) technology will allow Bridgelux to bring its F90 technology to a wide range of consumer lighting solutions. Popular lamp types that will now be powered by F90 technology include A lamps, BR, MR and Candelabra.

Bridgelux has created an important, enabling LED packaging technology that facilitates the transition from PFS’s cool white (>4000K) applications, such as display lighting, where it has been previously relegated to warm white (2700K) applications such as residential lighting due to the high concentration of PFS related lifetime issues. Bridgelux’s patented and innovative packaging solution solves the lifetime issue that has plagued PFS and allowed the expansion of F90 into the home.

Traditionally, there is an inverse relationship between CRI and efficacy: the higher the CRI, the lower the efficacy. By replacing broad-band red nitride with a narrow-band PFS phosphor, F90 products are able to perform as well as competing 80 CRI products.

The F90 products, while delivering CRI of 90 or greater and R9 > 50, will achieve efficacy that qualifies for California Title 20 and Europe’s Energy-related Products (ErP) for Class C (165 lm/W) and Class B (185 lm/W) designation. The following chart lists both F90 LED and Filaments types ready for immediate release.

UVC Based Disinfection Solutions for Automotive Applications

KPR is to announce the launch of UVC based disinfection solutions for automotive applications.

The KPR product utilizes UVC technology to disinfect the interiors of cars, trucks and other modes of transportation. It can be strategically placed in several areas of the interior.

The CAR-UVC that KPR will bring onto the market is a visor that can be clipped onto the original visor of the car, or can be replaced with an OEM version. The CAR-UVC is capable of disinfecting the driver space within 10 to 20 minutes. With one push of a button the visor starts to count down a lead time, typically one minute, so that the customer can get out of the car and close it, after which the disinfection starts. This disinfection typically lasts 5 to 10 minutes disinfecting the air, seat, steering wheel and center console.

The back of the headrest also has a fixture built-in so that the back side of the car interior can also be disinfected, which typically requires 5-10 minutes.

The exact minimal disinfection times depend on the model of the car. An IR motion detector aborts the disinfection if a person or animal is detected in the reach of the UVC LEDs. Alternatively, a dedicated smartphone app can be used to safely start the cycle remotely when the driver is outside the car.

The UV-C light is not safe for humans or animals, however, fortunately the Glass blocks UVC light and protects the area outside the car. Multiple systems can be coupled in a master-slave way to simultaneously disinfect all seats in a vehicle.

Bridgelux Research Study Reveals Top Lighting Specifiers’ Preference for Thrive Nature Light

Bridgelux, a developer and manufacturer of innovative LED solutions, announces the results of a study the firm commissioned for its innovative full spectrum product family, Thrive.

The goal of the study was to ascertain whether top designers would recognize a difference between Thrive and 90 CRI products and find out which light source looked more natural based on their expert opinion.

The study utilized a complement of Thrive and 90+ CRI LEDs at three popular color temperatures: 2700K, 3000K and 4000K. The light sources were placed inside a box and attached to a switch.

Common articles in different colors and finishes along with a standard Color Chart were placed under the LEDs inside the box. Designers were able to switch back and forth in each CCT to discern any differences. Their comments were recorded over a series of 18 separate tests.

Across this wide range of objects, Thrive was preferred 88% of the time compared to 8% for 90 CRI and 4% undecided. Enthusiastic response to Thrive were typical with one lighting designer claiming 'It felt like sunlight coming through the window.”'

Thrive uses a broad-blue chip technology and special phosphor blend to fill in the common Cyan gap that plagues most LED solutions.  The technology is at the heart of Sylvania’s TruWave technology for their popular Nature™ Lamp series of products.  Because of Thrive’s full-spectrum approach, Thrive is more able to match the spectrum of the sun across all color temperatures. Benefits of the natural spectrum of the sun using Thrive include reduced eye strain, less fragmented sleep and a higher sense of emotional well-being.

Jardin Vertical's Underground Farm Chooses Revolution's Avici Programmable Spectrum LEDs

Reducing food production's carbon footprint is critical for humanity moving forward and Chad Taylor of Jardin Vertical's new cultivation model is a vital step towards this sustainable future. His two-part plan tackles some of the biggest environmental threats in the industry and massively reduces carbon footprint while delivering fresh, healthy food in densely populated areas.

Jardin Vertical is changing the game in Canada. Instead of the popular rooftop greenhouse, which consumes fossil fuels to regulate temperature during their brutal -30° winters, their farm is in a basement. This provides a geothermal effect year-round minimizing heating and AC requirements, and this energy is provided by clean hydroelectric power. It is also an entirely closed system; fully aeroponic, all LED lighting, making it the first Tower Farm of it's kind in the world and the first commercial scale Tower Farm in Canada.

The high-power horticultural lights are built in an ethical manufacturing facility and, with a lifespan three times the industry standard, they won't end up in a landfill after five-ten years like most LEDs. They also feature a programmable spectrum, letting cultivators mimic optimum lighting conditions for any plant and adapt to new horticultural research.

New Decorative Linear Pendant Light With Remarkable Photometrics

Visa Lighting introduces Volare, a new decorative linear pendant. This new LED light brings eye-catching design elements with wow-factor performance to the commercial pendant lighting market.

The Volare pendant seemingly floats in space with a beautiful translucent acrylic diffuser that gently curves around a thin LED lightbar. Hidden hardware and the minimalist shape echo traditional Scandinavian designs bringing a more stylized option into the linear pendant lighting market.

Volare stands out from other linear suspension lighting seen on the commercial pendant lighting market because of its beautiful glow, interesting curved shape, and its impressive light output. Most linear pendant lighting provides only downlight which can create a cave-like atmosphere and harsh shadows. The improved performance of Volare provides usable surface downlight as well as uplight providing ambient illumination to the entire application space.

This pendant’s sleek design is credited to the pared-down simplicity of elements used such as the cloth-covered powered suspension cables eliminating a bulky power cord seen in similar fixtures. The LED light bar is suspended under the acrylic with hidden stand-offs and appears to float underneath the illuminated diffuser.
