Open-Style Upper-Room UV-C Luminary Offers Greater Infection Control
The high-output germicidal energy disrupts microbial RNA and DNA to prevent airborne pathogens from replicating and spreading infection.
The GLO open fixtures for tall spaces direct UV energy upward and outward to create an intense zone of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) or UV-C in the upper air. At the same time, occupants can safely go about their business in the lower portion of a room.
This increase in irradiance levels translates to greater UV-C coverage, enabling infection control specialists to treat more areas with fewer fixtures and saving both cost and energy.
These fixtures are ideal against droplet nuclei generated by coughing, sneezing, or talking as this expelled air rises to the upper area of a space where it is exposed to UV-C energy and infectious agents are inactivated. With UV-C upper-room luminaries in place, the UVGI energy disrupts the RNA/DNA in viruses and the DNA in bacteria to prevent a pathogen from replicating and spreading infection.

Higher Yields and Better Plant Quality Under Broad-Spectrum Lighting Strategies
As grocers push produce suppliers to deliver fresh, high-quality crops year-round, growers are increasingly exploring how to allocate high-tech greenhouse space to strawberries, which are typically grown outdoors or in hoop houses (small, semi-portable structures). Fluence and Delphy examined how to sustainably grow strawberry crops in high-tech greenhouse environments while maximizing yield and fruit quality.
Results are showing that strawberries thrive under predominantly white spectra, creating opportunities for greenhouse growers to introduce new, efficient lighting strategies into their facilities.
Strawberry cultivars grown under a broad-spectrum with a fraction of far-red saw taller crops, wider canopies, higher overall yields and increased Brix values. As with all crops and individual cultivars, there is no ubiquitous lighting strategy for optimizing plant yield and quality. However, global research endeavors continue to showcase the power of optimized lighting solutions for the world’s most popular crops.
Asymmetry is key to creating more stable blue perovskite LEDs
The study, published recently in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, could bring perovskite LEDs one step closer to commercialization.
Aside from efficiency levels, perovskite LEDs also have numerous advantages over current LED technologies on the market, as they have the potential to produce brighter, purer colors at a fraction of the production cost.
However, the stability of perovskite LEDs remains a huge barrier, with the operational lifetime of even the most stable LEDs lasting only a few hundred hours. Blue LEDs, in particular, have lagged behind red and green-colored LEDs, with a lifetime of less than 2 hours and around half the level of efficiency.
But without blue LEDs, practical applications using perovskites in color displays or as light sources are limited, as red, green and blue light need to be mixed to produce the full array of colors, including white, explained Professor Yabing Qi, senior author of the paper and head of the OIST Energy Materials and Surface Sciences Unit.
