Newly developed technique to improve quantum dots color conversion performance

Quantum dots color conversion (QDCC) has become a foundational technology in the design of full-color light-emitting devices with dramatically improved color performance. However, conventional QDCC pixels fabricated by inkjet printing are still too thin to achieve efficient color conversion.

A research team has developed perovskite quantum dots microarrays with strong potential for QDCC applications, including photonics integration, micro-LEDs, and near-field displays.

The researchers’ results further confirm the realization of high-quality multicolor microarrays through the inject printing approach. Looking ahead, the team sees potential applications for their work. They are confident that this technique paves the way for the further fabrication of full-color QDCC micro-LED displays. “The in situ direct print photopolymerization technique allows for precise control of the pixel structure, removing the aggregation of QDs and coffee-ring effects in microarrays, which will aid in their expansion in photonics integration, full-color display, on-chip biomedical diagnostics, and next-generation augmented reality and virtual reality devices,” said Yang.

'Growers Can Now Switch to LEDs for Zero Cost'

To ease the strain on California's energy grid, the state authorized the Market Access Program as a strategy to reduce peak demand and mitigate rolling blackouts.

The program authorized $150 million to incentivize projects that contribute to energy savings during the summers of 2022 and 2023. There are no cost caps and no product restrictions, but the program funds are first come, first serve.

California has issued a large number of cannabis cultivation licenses, increasing competitive pressure and driving down cannabis prices. Additionally, the cannabis industry's carbon problem has raised alarms following a Colorado State University study that showed the industry pollutes more than coal.

'By upgrading to LEDs, growers in California are not only helping prevent rolling blackouts, they are also improving their bottom line by reducing utility costs, increasing yields and margins. All this while reducing their carbon footprint and minimizing climate impact, it's a triple win,' George Mekhtarian, CEO of California Lightworks, says.

Compared to the grow operations outfitted with traditional high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights California Lightworks' MegaDrive increases the yield (both in terms of pounds per square foot and pounds per watt) and quality of the crop. Compared to other LED fixtures, the MegaDrive LED technology reduces fixture costs by up to 30% and installation costs by up to 80%. In addition, these benefits come at a 50% lower operating cost compared to traditional HPS lighting systems.

The MegaDrive spectrum and dimming controls can be integrated with third-party greenhouse environmental control systems or done independently using unique touch screen and wireless solutions.  Every aspect of the yield can thus be dialed in. In addition, the system's slim linear light design and central power supply reduce shadowing.

The growing need for mini-LED displays in consumer electronics products as compared to regular LEDs is mainly due to its wide dynamic range, power-saving capability, and lower failure rate of tiny LEDs. Moreover, the application of mini-LEDs in smartphones creates a lucrative growth opportunity in the market.

However, the high cost of mini-LEDs and high-power consumption in mini-LEDs inhibits the market growth over the forecast period. The increasing investment in the deployment of Mini LED technology is increasing the cost of mini-LEDs.

Foscarini acquires Ingo Maurer lighting brand

Aircraft Lighting Spotlights New Exterior LEDs

Aircraft Lighting International, maker of LED drop-in replacements for legacy fluorescent and incandescent cabin lighting systems, recently introduced new aircraft lighting product lines: LED exterior lighting and LED cockpit lighting replacements for legacy lighting systems.

ALI unveiled the new systems earlier this month at the NBAA Maintenance Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

The exterior and cockpit LED lights, like ALI’s cabin LED lighting, are true plug and play replacements, requiring no modification for virtually any business jet that has original A/E or B/E lighting and greatly reduces installation downtime, according to ALI.

Research teams develops large-area perovskite light-emitting diodes for next-generation display technology

A research team at Seoul National University developed highly efficient large-area perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 22.5% and pixel size of 102 mm2.

Metal halide perovskites have very narrow spectral emission, excellent color purity, low material cost, and wide and easy color-tunability. Based on these advantages, perovskites are considered as a promising high color purity light emitter which can replace the conventional organic and inorganic quantum dot (QD) light emitters in displays and solid-state lighting technologies.

Especially, perovskite is the ever-reported only one emitter which can meet the standard of REC.2020. Therefore, perovskite is expected to contribute to the future ultra-high-definition television (UHD-TV) technology.

The research results were published in Nature Nanotechnology, which is the world-renowned international academic journal, on May 4th.

Osram launches new LED family

Osram announced the launch of the OSLON Optimal family of LEDs, based on the latest ams Osram 1mm2 chip for horticulture lighting.

The new OSLON Optimal LEDs are available at launch in Hyper Red (660 nm) and Far Red (730 nm) colors. Deep Blue and Horti White versions are expected to be available in Q3 2022.

The Hyper Red, Deep Blue (450 nm), and Far Red LEDs have a tight tolerance of peak wavelength. The Horti White LED offers reduced output in the red spectrum when compared to standard white LEDs for illumination applications.

This allows growers to use more direct red emitters such as the Hyper Red OSLON Optimal LEDs to provide the red wavelengths needed for biomass growth and to reduce the reliance on less efficient phosphor-converted white emitters to cover the red part of the spectrum.

Size effect of AlGaInP red micro-LEDs on silicon substrate investigated

In a study published in Results in Physics, a research group led by Liang Jingqiu from the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences investigated the size effect of aluminum gallium indium phosphide (AlGaInP) red Micro-LEDs on silicon substrate.

The researchers adopted a low-damage etching formula and silicon substrates with better heat dissipation to avoid the light absorption properties of GaAs substrates.

Experimental results show that smaller micro-LEDs have smaller leakage current and larger series resistance and can withstand higher current density without the current crowding effect.

New road-legal retrofit H4-LED offers brighter, longer-lasting replacement for halogen lamps

ams OSRAM extended its Night Breaker line of automotive retrofit LEDs for headlights, introducing a new H4-LED combined low-beam/high-beam lamp which is approved for road use in Germany.

Like the Night Breaker H7 LED lamp, which OSRAM was the first manufacturer to offer in 2020, the new H4-LED lamp brings the benefits of safety, visibility and style to a wide range of makes and models of cars.

The H4-LED is brighter, lasts longer and produces a more attractive light than the halogen lamps fitted to older vehicles when they were manufactured.

Tests conducted unter the supervision of TÜV Süd show that the Night Breaker H4-LED produces 230% more light than the minimum required under the ECE R112 standard for halogen headlamps, and with 50% less glare. This means that cars fitted with the Night Breaker can see and be seen better.

In addition, the Night Breaker H4-LED lasts up to five times longer than a standard halogen lamp. This reduces the frequency of visits to the service center for lamp replacement, as well as saving on the cost of replacing failed lamps.

Signify and Intelligent Waves to Deliver Mission-critical, Light Waves-based Wireless Connectivity

Signify has entered into a strategic technology collaboration with Intelligent Waves, developer of the cyber-defense solution, GRAYPATH. Together, Signify’s game-changing LiFi solution, Trulifi, and the GRAYPATH software use invisible light waves to enable reliable, secure, two-way wireless data communication, providing defense personnel with mission-critical connectivity.

Signify’s Trulifi solution offers physical security via dedicated USB access keys and a consistent, high-speed wireless connection through light, while GRAYPATH uses the cloud to randomize and distribute data across multiple paths and encrypted channels. The technology integration enables the secure transmission of data from high-risk operational locations without the danger of information being jammed, intercepted or disrupted.

According to Joe Vano, Transmission Group Lead, Program Management Office – Tactical Network, Technical Management Division of the US Army, “LiFi can enhance the Low Probability of Intercept/Low Probability of Detection attribute on the battlefield. This secures the Tactical Operations Center (TOC) to a higher degree due to its insignificant and largely undetectable RF signature while maintaining high-speed connectivity within the TOC. Reducing our adversaries’ ability to intercept and jam the battlefield Commander’s network while still maintaining a network cable-free environment within the TOC is advantageous.”
