Programmable Spectrum LEDs 'Revolutionize Cannabis Cultivation'
Programmable Spectrum LEDs open up a whole new world of possibilities to cannabis cultivators. They can be used to mimic seasons and shorten harvests to increase the number of cycles per year. They can control plant architecture, using plants’ natural response to blue to shorten internodal spacing for stocky plants or using red to encourage reaching. They can influence terpene profiles to grow a more flavorful, aromatic crop or to boost cannabinoid content for a high THC content. They can even influence the color of the bud by using shorter wavelength (bluer) light to trigger anthocyanin production which give the buds more purple, red, and pink tones.
The Avici series is also environmentally friendly and reduces overall facility costs with its high efficacy. At 2.06 - 3.8 uMole/J, depending on spectrum, the Avici lights a room to HPS brightness with thirty percent less light. That’s also thirty percent less heat, which leads to less air conditioning needs and overall reduces the electrical consumption of facilities by 40% compared to HPS.
That’s a reduced carbon footprint in addition to the reliable, future-proof lights that will stay out of the landfill far longer than other LEDs.

DPI Labs Introduces Remote Phosphor LED Technology to Aircraft Cabin Lighting Market
Branded DPI Slimline Smartlights, the remote phosphor technology offers “dotless” homogeneous lighting for cabin wash, toe kick and accent lighting. Unlike typical LED strip lighting where individual LEDs can be seen and each diode casts its own light cone, dotless remote phosphor technology uses studio-grade Royal Blue LEDs to energize a coating of phosphor inside the strip. The effect is a smooth ‘dot-free’ homogenous lighting product resembling traditional fluorescent tubes but with the benefits of much smaller size, minimal energy consumption and much longer life than even normal LED strip lighting.
Traditional LEDs are great for certain applications but in some cases like upwash, downwash or accent lighting, the requirement is for a smooth homogenous effect with no hotspots or jittery shadows, said Greg DeSmet, DPI’s engineering manager.
DPI’s new remote phosphor lighting is part of their SmartLight LED strip lighting product line which uses studio-quality flicker free LEDs for cabin lighting applications. DPI’s SmartLights can be measured and cut-to-fit by MROs during installation providing a zero-lead time solution both new aircraft installations as well as quick fluorescent lighting retrofit replacements. DPI’s compact lighting power supply modules allow their lighting to be installed into legacy cabin control systems.

Radiant Vision Systems Joins the MicroLED Industry Association to Support Technology Development
The MicroLED Industry Association was formed in 2022 to accelerate the adoption of microLED display technologies, bringing together companies, researchers, and organizations active in the microLED and providing a forum for solving common technology issues, fostering cooperation, and sharing relevant resources. The association’s mission is to ensure that the microLED display industry speaks in a uniformed voice and promote microLED display solutions. The association is actively seeking new members with the aim of assisting microLED innovators in reaching their marketing and development goals.
Like OLED, microLED quality relies on the consistent output of individual light-emitting subpixels. Inconsistencies in microLED brightness or color, inaccuracies during wafer-level transfer, and other fabrication issues can result in displays with a noticeable non-uniform or speckled appearance. Radiant’s pixel-level measurement methods enable imaging systems to capture highly accurate values of luminance and chromaticity at each emissive subpixel. Applying patented methods (US Patent 9135851; US Patent 10971044), Radiant’s ProMetric Imaging Colorimeter and Photometer solutions are capable of measuring all individual microLED subpixels in a display at once to calculate discrepancies between subpixel output. This enables output to be adjusted to uniform values at all display bright states—a process called pixel uniformity correction (PUC) or demura.

GeSn resonant-cavity LEDs
Researchers in Taiwan report room-temperature mid-infrared resonant electroluminescence from germanium tin (GeSn) resonant-cavity light-emitting diodes (RCLEDs) with a lateral p-i-n configuration on a silicon-on-insulator.
Group IV light emission is hampered by the indirectness of the bandgap, which inhibits electron-hole recombination into photons. However, the Ge energy band structure has a direct valley at the Γ point that is only 136.5meV higher than the indirect L-valley.
The team theoretically calculated that the band structure of GeSn with 4.3% Sn content and 0.52% compressive strain showed a decrease in the energy difference between the conduction-band valleys at the direct Γ point and in the L-direction to 89meV

Fluence Announces Partnership With Maryland Cannabis Leader, CULTA
As the first medicinal cannabis distributor to grow outdoors in Maryland, CULTA has led the charge in using science and innovative technology to cultivate best-in-class products for its patients.
CULTA’s growing operation is split between indoor rooms and three acres of outdoor cropland at its Cambridge, Maryland, processing facility, which also houses the state’s first on-site culture lab for genetic cannabis tissue. The company delivers products to patients at its flagship Baltimore dispensary and many partner dispensaries throughout the state.
Demand for medical cannabis in Maryland has exploded since the state first legalized medical cannabis sales to registered patients in 2017, with a commensurate increase in state-issued grower, processor and dispensary licenses leading to more marketplace competition than ever. CULTA turned to Fluence LED technology to enhance its indoor operations and genetic library, cementing its status as an industry frontrunner in producing premium cannabis strains for patients and developing new and unique terpene combinations for high-quality medicine.
“We now have Fluence SPYDRx, SPYDR 2x, SPYDR 2p and VYPR fixtures installed in our facility in Cambridge,” said Jay Bouton, senior director of cultivation at CULTA. “LED technology has helped increase our output in each grow space by allowing us to go vertical, and the high-intensity lighting also enables us to push our plants harder than we ever have before. We’re using Fluence LEDs to increase the amount of plant photosynthesis during peak growth periods and have experienced increased potency, yields and success as a result.”
Equipping the Cambridge facility’s cannabis grow rooms with Fluence LED technology has also supported CULTA’s sustainability goals by cutting down on its carbon footprint and removing demand from Maryland’s electricity grid. While CULTA continues to use legacy high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights in some cultivation spaces, each new indoor facility expansion has been outfitted with LED double-stack lighting.
The addition of full-spectrum LED lighting to its growing repertoire is already assisting CULTA in its mission to understand optimal environmental and nutritional needs for cannabis cultivation. This data will allow the company to produce new cultivars that can cater to diverse medical needs as well as optimize current processes to increase production and improve delivery of high-quality medicine to patients.

Asahi Kasei demonstrates how Crystal IS UVC LED technology can be applied to achieve higher disinfection efficiency in water treatment than conventional mercury lamp systems
Klaran WR is an inline Point of Use (PoU) water treatment reactor (Figure 1, left) which combines Crystal IS’ UVC LEDs based on aluminum nitride (AlN) substrates (Figure 1, right), with Asahi Kasei’s R&D capability in the design and application of optics and fluid-dynamics.
While conventional UV water treatment systems have used mercury lamps as a light source, nations around the world adopted stricter regulations after the Minamata Convention on Mercury became effective in 2017, due to the hazards that mercury poses to health and the environment. UVC LEDs have been developed as a mercury-free light source featuring small size, light weight and flexibility in design. A key milestone speeding the transition to this modern light source is demonstrating that the disinfection performance, power efficiency and value of the new LED technology can fully meet or exceed the incumbent mercury lamp.
While it is widely understood and accepted that UVC LED’s instant on-off capability offers a significant advantage and better alignment with actual consumer use than an “always on” mercury lamp system, a question remained whether an equivalent powered LED system could demonstrate equivalent disinfection performance as a low-pressure mercury lamp system. The experimental Klaran™ WR reactor was developed to demonstrate that UVC LEDs can achieve just this.
A standard Klaran WR was enhanced and modified to operate with the same power consumption level (6 W) as a comparable mercury lamp system. Both systems were tested using water at a flow rate of 8 liters per minute (2.1 gallons per minute), with a UV transmittance of 97% at 265 nm and dosed with the addition of approximately 106 CFU/mL of E. coli, a common gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria, for testing. As there is no established testing method for this type of comparison, Asahi Kasei devised the testing method and contracted an independent laboratory to perform the evaluation.
