Circadian Light Research Center Survey Confirms Harmful Health Effects of Blue-Enriched LED Light

The Circadian Light Research Center has released the results of a consensus survey of 248 leading scientists, which confirms that human circadian clocks are highly sensitive to blue wavelengths, and exposure to insufficient daytime blue-rich light and excessive blue-rich light at night, leads to many major health disorders.

Lead author Martin Moore-Ede, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Circadian Light Research Center and a former professor at Harvard Medical School, said, "Fewer than 0.5% of lights sold today protect circadian health by altering their blue content across day and night. Many people in the lighting industry claim that the circadian science is not sufficiently mature to incorporate into lights. So, we asked the leading scientists who work on circadian rhythms and light whether they agreed."

All scientists on PubMed who had published four or more peer-reviewed scientific papers since 2008 on circadian + light were invited to participate. Two hundred forty-eight of these scientists, who had published a total of 2,697 peer-reviewed publications on light and circadian clocks since 2008, completed an online survey with 40 potential consensus statements. They were asked to assess for each statement whether there was "no evidence,” "limited" evidence,” "good evidence," or "well established.” Consensus was established for 24 of these statements, where more than 2/3 agreed there was "good evidence" or it was "well established.”

Professor Sean Cain of Monash University in Australia, an author of the study, said: 'Exposure to blue-enriched LED light in the evening and night hours raises significant health issues because the human circadian system is highly sensitive to blue light near the 480 nm peak sensitivity of the melanopic intrinsically-photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) in the human retina. Even small amounts of blue content in white LED light during nocturnal hours can cause circadian disruption and increase the risk of health disorders.'

Dimlux Unveils Fully Customizable LED Grow Light

Dimlux Lighting's newest product offering has raised the bar for LED Grow Lights – the Xtreme Series LED Grow Light. These fixtures are available in 500w, 750w, and 1000w configurations and can be purchased with or without a far-red spectrum.

Studies have shown that combining red and far-red increases the photosynthetic rate beyond the sum of the individual contributions. Higher photosynthetic rates mean larger flowers. Many growers swear that there is a link between more red light in their spectrum and larger flowers. While the science is still out, this fixture will allow growers to begin to properly test this theory.

The white and red(s) LED channels can be controlled independently allowing the grower to change the spectrum of light the plants are receiving. The Xtreme LED fixtures offer significantly more red light than any other LED grow light. They can be tuned from a 1:1 to more than 1:10 blue-to-red ratio (but not recommended to exceed 1:4.5). While other tunable fixtures can technically achieve these same ratios, it would require substantially turning down the white LEDs resulting in a severe decrease to the total output.

Toshiba Develops Transparent Photoluminescent Phosphor for LED

Toshiba Corporationhas unveiled a technology breakthrough in photoluminescence, a novel phosphor that delivers excellent solubility in polymers or organic solvents, where it is transparent and colorless under visible light, and that emits persistent red-light emissions under UV light, with excellent color purity and a luminescence six times that of current phosphors. These characteristics open up many potential applications in areas that include LED lighting, displays, deep UV sensing, security printing, and pesticide residue testing.

A phosphor is a substance that absorbs energy from a light source, such as UV or visible light, and releases that energy by emitting colored light. Phosphors are commonly used in LED lighting and displays, and in security printing. However, in the field of mini- and micro-LED lighting and displays, where the chips used are very small, the inorganic phosphors typically used have a limited color reproduction capability and luminescence intensity. These phosphors are also insoluble and exist as fine particles, and when used in security printing, printed patterns become faintly visible, depending on the angle of view and light exposure. Toshiba’s new phosphor overcomes these problems.

Toshiba has focused its photoluminescence research on novel lanthanide luminescent complexes. The company has developed a proprietary molecular design method, and used this to bind the ions of a standard Eu(III) luminescent complex with two or more phosphine oxide structures, including a branched tetraphosphine tetraoxide ligand recently discovered by Toshiba.

According to P&S Intelligence, the smart lighting fixture and control market was valued at $52,047 million in 2021, which is predicted to hit $152,029 million by 2030, progressing at a 12.6% CAGR from 2021 to 2030. This is attributed to the reducing cost of LED lights, which has been made possible by the falling material prices and rising manufacturing output.

In the coming years, LED lights are expected to dominate the industry for smart light fixtures due to their better efficiency than conventional bulbs and their lowering cost.

Based on distribution channel, the offline channel category holds the bigger share, because salespersons give detailed installation instructions for light fixtures, thus assisting in the selection of high-quality items.

Due to the large number of product offers and the growth of the e-commerce industry in countries such as China, Germany, the U.S., the U.K., and Japan, the online channel is predicted to grow at the higher CAGR in the future.

Moreover, owing to the accessibility of a wide variety of products and the rising usage of PCs, tablets, smartphones, and laptops, the sales of lighting fixtures on e-commerce portals are expected to rise.

In 2021, the commercial category held the largest revenue share—more than 46%. Due to its energy saving potential, smart outdoor and indoor lighting is becoming popular in hospitals, offices, and malls and other retail establishments.

HID and LED lamps are also used in commercial applications owing to their lower service costs at hard-to-reach places, where the replacement costs are higher than for lights near the ground.

Real Life Lightsabers by DynamicSabers

DynamicSabers (also styled as "Dynamic Sabers") is making real life lightsabers available to fans of the 'Star Wars' franchise. The company's product lineup boasts dozens of different lightsaber styles to fit the needs of their many fans.

The company's products are organized into collection tiers: Apprentice, Knight, and Master. This makes it easier for customers of DynamicSabers to find the lightsaber that is best suited for them. Within their extensive product lineup are different electronic components or "cores" that can be selected for each lightsaber. These cores are what makes the company's products truly unique, and are also what makes them so realistic.

The lightsabers sold by DynamicSabers come in two different core types: RGB baselit and neopixel. The neopixel core type is further divided into standard neopixel and proffie neopixel, with the proffie version being the most realistic type you can get into.

The company's RGB baselit and neopixel cores are very different. RGB baselit lightsabers utilize a light from within the saber's hilt (or handle) that projects into the blade. This light's color can also be changed, which thus changes the blade color. In addition, RGB baselit lightsabers have synchronized visual and sound effects, which includes flash-on-clash, a lock-up-loop, and deflection noises. On the other hand, the neopixel cores of DynamicSabers behave very differently. Rather than being lit by a light within the hilt, neopixel lightsabers are lit from within the blade itself. Within the neopixel blade are 50-watt LED strips. This allows for perfectly even illumination of the lightsaber blade, making it as realistic as in the movies. Furthermore, each of these LEDs can be individually controlled, resulting in a nearly infinite number of visual and sound effects. The neopixel lightsabers from DynamicSabers are the most realistic real-life lightsabers that you can get into. Both the company's RGB baselit and neopixel lightsabers utilize durable polycarbonate blades, which allows for dueling.

3D Printed Light Pipe Turns Overly-Bright LED Into Design Harmony

There are a number of ways to efficiently and elegantly limit an LED’s brightness, but developer Tommy found that using a light pipe or diffuser can integrate better with a device, especially when the device itself is mostly 3D printed in the first place.

He designed a small array of different LED cover options, and tested each to see what yielded the best results for his printed kit.

Tommy explores these kinds of issues because he designs and builds electronic synth instruments, and they are mostly 3D printed. He explores efficiency and is always happy to share his findings about what works and doesn’t work.

New high-resolution Porsche LED main headlights with HD matrix beam

Porsche has developed the light technology of the next generation with its new high-resolution HD matrix technology.

The core element of the innovation created in collaboration with partners is a chip that combines over 16,000 individually controllable micro-LEDs onto the surface area the size of a thumbnail. Of these LED chips, two are utilised for each headlight – four per vehicle. The headlights with HD matrix technology therefore offer a high-resolution light distribution up to twice as bright on a surface four times larger than previous top-notch systems.

The driver benefits from the highly flexible light that the new development makes possible thanks to extremely homogeneous illumination. In addition, there are innovative functions such as lane illumination, construction and narrow-lane light and adaptive motorway high-beam lights.

In addition to four-point daytime driving lights and static cornering lights, the new Porsche headlight includes two of the new HD matrix modules and two bi-functional modules for courtesy lighting and the auxiliary high beam. These four main light sources are arranged in a four-point design characteristic of the brand. The previous top headlight from Porsche, by contrast, features four courtesy modules and a central Matrix module in 84-pixel technology.

Dolores hears complaints about new LED street lamps

Some residents of the US town of Dolores say new LED bulbs being installed in streetlights have bright white color and in some cases shine into homes.

Town streetlights are managed by Empire Electric Association. So far, eight of the town’s 100 streetlights in Dolores have been switched to the new LED fixtures.

The new lights cast a whiter color, compared with the orange/yellow glow of previous bulbs.

The change triggered complaints from several residents, and the town has halted the switch to the new lights to work on solutions, Charles said, noting that some residents have expressed support for the LED lights.
