Toyoda Gosei’s LED Driver Alert Lighting System Used on New Prius
The new LED driver alert lighting system visually alerts drivers using strong light at times such as when they remain stopped at an intersection without noticing that the vehicle in front of them has moved forward, or before the vehicle’s automatic deceleration system begins operating when a pedestrian or some obstacle is detected.
The brightness of the strong light used to alert the driver is about 30 times higher than conventional decorative lighting. The light distribution design uses a light guide to direct the light toward the driver’s seat, so that it is easily noticeable by the driver even during the day.
Adding functions for communication between vehicle and occupants via LED lighting (human-machine interface system) to the steering wheel, instrument panel and other cockpit products contributes to the creation of more secure and comfortable mobile spaces.
Breakthrough in efficiency of perovskite LEDs
Led by Letian Dou, Charles Davidson Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, the team has published its work in Nature Communications.
On the downside, perovskite materials are less stable and can degrade quickly. Further, device efficiency has not been fully optimized to compete with conventional LEDs.
“Our work aims to resolve these critical issues,” said Dou, who conceived the idea, supervised the project and provided funding support.
“We achieved efficient and stable deep-red LEDs with a peak external quantum efficiency of 26.3%, which is the highest efficiency for red perovskite LEDs. The stability results are also better than the perovskite LEDs based on similar materials,” Wang said. “In addition, our devices exhibited wide wavelength tunability and improved spectral and phase stability compared with existing perovskite LEDs.”
Fundamentally, these discoveries provide critical insights into the molecular design and crystallization kinetics of low-dimensional perovskite semiconductors, which is critical for light-emitting devices.

FSU researchers develop new method to produce next-gen LED
Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Biwu Ma and other FSU researchers published their work in the scientific journal Advanced Materials.
Ma and his team engineered a small molecular change to address the low conductivity of zero-dimensional (0D) organic metal halide hybrids — compounds made of metal and halogen — and produced a new material that emits highly efficient red light.
When LEDs use this hybrid material as an emitting layer, it has an external quantum efficiency of 5%. Quantum efficiency is how effectively devices convert the energy of electrons into photons, ultimately creating a visible light. Other organic LEDs have rates at about 20%, but the FSU team’s work is among the best value reported to date for electroluminescent devices based on this class of hybrid materials.
Electrically driven LEDs, or electroluminescent devices, have a wide range of applications, from full-color displays to solid-state lighting. Scientists and engineers have developed various types over the past few decades, including LEDs based on inorganic semiconductors, organic LEDs (OLEDs), quantum dot-based LEDs (QDLEDs), and more recently, LEDs based on metal halide perovskites (PeLEDs).

AIXTRON and ams OSRAM announce qualification of AIXTRON G5+ C and G10-AsP systems
The MOCVD systems AIX G5+ C and the new G10-AsP from AIXTRON SE offer AIXTRON planetary technology which is paving the pathway for the next generation of high-resolution Micro LED displays. In spring 2022, ams OSRAM had announced plans to create additional manufacturing capacity in 200mm for the production of LED and Micro LED at its existing location in Malaysia. The MOCVD systems are expected to help enable volume production of Micro LED for a new generation of display applications.
Micro LED technology offers very significant advantages for display technology such as higher pixel density, longer lifetime, higher brightness, faster switching speed and a wider color spectrum. An important benefit is also the low relative energy consumption, which qualifies Micro LED ideally for upcoming generations of smaller display-equipped consumer devices which provide a very limited space for batteries.
The production of Micro LED comes with special requirements: Micro LED volume production includes a special transfer process where multiple thousands of LED chips (arrays) of just micrometers in size are picked up and transferred. Any defect can result in dead pixels that can make an entire array useless. Hence, an almost error-free epitaxy process is necessary, minimizing defects and allowing for high yield and economically viable production of Micro LED.
AIXTRON’s new G10-AsP epitaxy tool has been designed to address the specific needs of this application: It is the world's first fully automated AsP reactor offering cassette-to-cassette wafer loading as well as a cleaning mechanism based on in-situ etching. Together, these two features have a major impact on the yield performance. In addition, the AIXTRON system offers the advantages of batch reactor technology: it comes with the lowest production cost per wafer currently available in the market and the highest throughput per cleanroom area. At the same time, the new tool comes with precise flow and temperature control permitting the best material uniformities run after run.
Johnson Controls, PURO UV and Ushio embark on research to study the efficacy and safety of filtered far UV-C technology
Far UV-C is a narrow band of UVC light centered at 222nm, which is proven to inactivate pathogens at levels that are safe for human exposure and can be used in spaces where people are present.
While the efficacy of filtered far UV-C light disinfection is widely known, there is limited research on the ancillary effects that occur from the inactivation of pathogens using far UV-C light. The planned research will allow for a better understanding of the possible impact the elimination of pathogens has on the surrounding air.
The research agreement, which includes technologies and products from PURO and Ushio, will focus on the testing of regulatory-approved filtered far UV-C lighting technologies. The research will be initiated by leading U.S.-based universities and certified laboratories over the next 3-6 months. Because of the importance of this research to public health and well-being, the results will be made publicly available and shared broadly to inform customer choices and public policy.
According to a recently released white paper from Johnson Controls, "Measuring the Return on Indoor Air Quality Investment," better indoor air quality can conservatively lead to a $750 to $800 return per employee per year through reducing absenteeism from health issues and the reduction of productivity due to poor air quality.

Vertical full-colour micro-LEDs via 2D materials-based layer transfer
Recent demonstrations of vertical µLED displays have attempted to address this issue by stacking freestanding RGB LED membranes and fabricating top-down7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14, but minimization of the lateral dimensions of stacked µLEDs has been difficult. Here we report full-colour, vertically stacked µLEDs that achieve, to our knowledge, the highest array density (5,100 pixels per inch) and the smallest size (4 µm) reported to date.
This is enabled by a two-dimensional materials-based layer transfer technique15,16,17,18 that allows the growth of RGB LEDs of near-submicron thickness on two-dimensional material-coated substrates via remote or van der Waals epitaxy, mechanical release and stacking of LEDs, followed by top-down fabrication. The smallest-ever stack height of around 9 µm is the key enabler for record high µLED array density.

Global LED Lighting Market Size To Grow USD 160 Billion By 2030
Rising construction in both developing and developed countries, together with government laws limiting the use of inefficient lighting systems, are the primary factors anticipated to drive the market. The Indian LED lighting market is highly fragmented, with many domestic and international players in the country. Due to the fragmented nature of the market, the competition among the players is high.
The market is being driven by a number of important factors, including rising consumer interest in high lumen, low watt products, easy availability in a variety of colour combinations, and rising demand for highly energy-efficient lighting systems with low maintenance costs. LED lamps also have a longer lifespan than conventional lamps. An LED is essentially a semiconductor light source that aids in the conversion of electrical energy into light energy. In place of incandescent light sources, these components are frequently utilised in lamps.
LED lighting is actually the fastest-growing and most energy-efficient lighting technology on the market today. In addition to this, LED lights provide better longeivity, a longer operating life, and better lighting quality than conventional lighting technologies. Manufacturing lighting components for commercial and domestic applications frequently uses LED lights.
The governments of many nations have begun to fully support investments in energy-efficient lighting technologies through a variety of policies, which has increased the use of LED lights in the commercial, industrial, and residential sectors. In addition, government regulations for energy efficiency, consumer awareness of the environment, and the longevity of LED lights are encouraging the adoption of LED lighting, which has expanded the market for LED lighting globally. One of the main tactics used by manufacturers to include LEDs into exam lights, surgical illumination, endoscopy, and phototherapy in order to advance medical science technology is also one of the key drivers driving the expansion of the global LED lighting market. Due to the strict regulations and lockdowns put in place by the government following the start of the COVID 19 pandemic, the demand for LED lighting was significantly hampered. However, the second half of 2021 saw a minor improvement in construction as a result of projects being upgraded, which helped the global LED lighting market share steadily recover.

The UV disinfection equipment refers to the devices that use short-wavelength UV radiations to destroy or inactivate microorganisms. The UV rays damage their nucleic acid and disrupt the DNA, thereby halting vital cellular functions and effectively neutralizing chloride-resistant pathogenic organisms. This is commonly performed through light-emitting diodes (LEDs), lamps and bulbs and are used for the purification of food products, water and industrial solvents. Owing to this, it finds extensive applications across the food and beverage, biopharmaceutical and industrial industries.
The global market is primarily being driven by the growing demand for ultra-pure water and natural methods for air, water and waste purification. In comparison to chlorine-based treatment systems, UV disinfection equipment have no toxic residue and minimal operating costs and maintenance requirements.
The growing prevalence of water-borne diseases, especially in emerging nations, has further catalysed the adoption of the product. UV radiation has high germicidal ability and can effectively disinfect water containing bacteria, viruses and protozoans. This aids in meeting the ever-increasing need for safe and clean drinking water across the globe.
Additionally, widespread product adoption by the healthcare industry is acting as another major growth-inducing factor. The equipment can be customized and designed specifically for operating rooms, patient wards and other spaces that can minimize the spread of hospital-acquired diseases. Other factors, including the development of energy-efficient UV-LED devices and the implementation of government initiatives promoting the utilization of environment-friendly disinfection methods, are projected to drive the market further.

Heliospectra Launches a New Flexible Far-Red Light for Application Based Growing
MITRA Flex allows growers to use targeted crop strategies with its flexible far-red by combining three spectra in one – PAR, PAR plus Far-Red, and Far-Red Only – without losing power. In addition, the flexible far-red option allows growers to have the far-red on or off depending on crop variety, production stage, or at a specific part of the day.
In addition, to further adapt to each crop and plant growth stage, MITRA Flex comes with wireless dimming and can be connected to Heliospectra's light control system helioCORE™ for dynamic DLI control, dimming and to create grow-zone strategies for different varieties or areas.
Far-red light has proven to be beneficial for a large variety of crops. It helps extend the growth of plants' stems, allowing plants to reach 'harvest-ready' height faster. Including far-red in the light spectrum can also increase leaf size, enabling plants to capture more light, which can indirectly increase their growth over time. Additionally, far-red light plays a role in the flowering of some plants, increasing the number of flowers or speeding up the flowering process. Last, far-red helps ensure high-quality and consistent crop production in low-light seasons such as winter or shoulder months.

Signify brings efficient outdoor lighting to Cambridge University
In addition, the new LEDs require less maintenance time and will provide an improved night-time experience for the users of the site.
Dating back to 1920, West Cambridge is an important part of the University of Cambridge estate, with University and private tenants accessing roads, footpaths, parking and bus routes. The site’s enhanced lighting design is part of a long-term development masterplan that aims to create a high quality, well-connected research environment that will enable the University and community to grow and flourish.
Over the decades, different generations of outdoor lighting have been installed around the site, leading to a mix of technologies and an inconsistent look and feel. Philips TownTune luminaires will light the campus’s roads, paths and car parks as part of a site-wide development to provide consistency of design, improve wayfinding, and reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. In addition, the luminaires have an upward light output ratio of zero, therefore minimizing sky glow and the impact on the night sky.
Each of the new luminaires is equipped with a unique QR code connected to the Signify Service Tag application. Site managers can scan the QR code to access documentation and data, configure the luminaire directly at the installation site, and access the latest spare part information, including any new generation updates. The Service Tag application also supports asset management data, allowing organizations to document information to better manage lighting assets.
Nichia and Infineon launch industry’s first high-definition micro-LED matrix solution
Automotive LED lighting technology has developed rapidly in recent years as a means for vehicle manufacturers to enhance driving comfort and road safety. In this regard, matrix LED technology for adaptive driving beam has become an important headlight feature for selective road illumination. Three years ago, Infineon and Nichia announced the joint development of a high-definition (HD) light engine with more than 16,000 micro-LEDs for headlight applications. It has been a success. Collaborating with a European Tier1 company, the micro-LED matrix solution with this industry’s first fully integrated micro-LED light engine for HD adaptive driving beam applications which has been tested based on AEC (Automotive Electronics Council) qualification requirements will be seen in a German premium vehicle in 2023.
The µPLS light engine uses Nichia's unique in-house LED chip and micro-LED technology and an integrated LED driver IC from Infineon that can drive all 16,384 micro-LEDs individually using pulse-width modulation (PWM) control. Additionally, the driver IC monitors each micro-LED separately and provides on-chip temperature monitoring allowing for optimal thermal control. Integrated video interfaces enable high-speed transmission of the video signal from the light pattern generator unit. Unlike current HD matrix solutions, Infineon’s driver IC only activates the LEDs that are actually needed for a light pattern. This dramatically increases the energy efficiency of the µPLS light engine at much smaller form factor compared to micro-mirror-based HD matrix solutions in the market.
