iLamp Oregon secures the exclusive license for the future of smart streetlights for Oregon

iLamp Oregon has successfully secured the full territorial rights for iLamp and all its current and future applications for the State of Oregon, paving the way for a revolutionary transformation of the State's Green-Technology initiatives and Smart-City infrastructure.

This significant milestone is supported by a $4.6m capital investment which has enabled iLamp Oregon to purchase the territory rights, bestowing the company with full and exclusive sales, distribution, manufacturing, marketing and sublicensing rights.

Full implementation of the territory promises to stimulate the local Oregon economy by creating jobs in various areas, including manufacturing, assembly, installation, maintenance and management of iLamp street-lights and micro-grid systems.

ISELED Alliance adds thee new members

Three more manufacturers of microcontrollers and Arduino-compatible LED driver and development boards have joined the industry alliance: AutoChips, Zhixin Semiconductor and Hebatronic. As a result, the open industry alliance now has more than fifty members, covering the entire automotive lighting value chain.

Founded in 2013, AutoChips is a wholly owned subsidiary of NavInfo, with headquarters in Wuhan, China. AutoChips focuses on microchip research, development and design for the automotive industry and related systems. The company provides connectivity solutions, audio amplifiers, SoC, microcontrollers and other products for a variety of automotive applications. A range of MCUs and SoCs will now support ISELED.

Zhixin Semiconductor is a high-tech semiconductor company manufacturing high reliability controllers and processor chips for the automotive industry. Zhixin was founded in 2019 and is headquartered in Tianjin, China. The company has research and development centres in Shanghai, Suzhou and Hefei. Its employees have many years of experience in automotive electronics product definition, product design, system application development and marketing. The first MCUs supporting ISELED are already available.

Hebatronic in Germany is a supplier of Arduino-compatible LED driver and development boards for easy programming of ISELED and ILaS applications. Their product range includes Arduino-compatible open source development kits, an Arduino-compatible shield that plugs onto development boards to add full ILas functionality, and custom solutions for evaluation purposes or testing during production.

Signify and Klite opening their largest factory

Signify and its Chinese manufacturing company Klite will open their largest factory in the world in Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province, China. The new factory of Signify’s joint venture company Zhejiang Klite Lighting Holdings Co., Ltd (“Klite”) will manufacture high-quality branded LED lighting products, including for the Philips brand, for China and the global market. 

Fully operational by the end of this year with 192 production lines, the 200,000-square-meter facility will utilize world-class manufacturing technology, advanced process control, and intelligent logistics to produce LED lighting sources and luminaires for both professional and consumer markets.

The plant is situated about 370 miles inland with a major port along the Yangtze River, about 150 miles southeast of Wuhan.

LED lighting proposed for Clark Bridge

The Clark Brdige will probably get LED lighting technonology. The $1 million proposal is spearheaded by Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau CEO Cory Jobe and Alton Alderman Ray Strebel. Aldermen will hear more about the plan at their Wednesday night meeting.

Clark Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge across the Mississippi River between West Alton, Missouri and Alton, Illinois. Named after explorer William Clark like the bridge it replaced, the cable-stayed bridge opened in 1994. It carries U.S. Route 67 across the river
Along with creating an artistic night skyline, planners say the project will enhance safety and security for the bridge.

The project would use LED lighting to greatly reduce the energy needs of illuminating the bridge. According to planners, the existing Clark Bridge lighting draws 165 watts per fixture. The new lighting would consume only 45 watts per fixture — a 73% reduction in energy use.

Ballpoint Pens Let You Draw Custom LEDs

Researchers from Washington University in St. Louis and Florida State University have made a ballpoint pen that allows you to draw custom LEDs or photodetectors on a range of surfaces, by hand.

The ink inside is where the magic happens. Filled with what the team describes as as PEDOT:PSS/PEO composite ink, drawings made with the pen can be lit through the application of electricity — creating what they call PeLEDs in the shape of your choosing.

The composite ink-loaded pens are usable by anyone, without prior training, the researchers claim, and can also be used to draw custom photodetectors — taking advantage of an LED's ability to work in reverse and detect light rather than emit it.

Aqara Debuts its First Smart Lighting Device for Global Markets

Aqara introduced a multipurpose, RGBCCT lightstrip, the LED Strip T1, to the global markets. As the Company’s first smart lighting device that is widely sold across multiple continents, the LED Strip T1 not only displays up to 16 million vibrant colors but also provides tunable white accent lighting. Moreover, it supports a wide range of third-party smart home platforms and can be seamlessly integrated into various smart home setups.

The new light strip is now available on the Company’s Amazon brand stores in North America (US, Canada) and Europe (France, Italy, Spain, UK) as well as via selected Aqara retailers worldwide.

Built upon the Zigbee protocol, the LED Strip T1 has a lower idle power consumption than the Wi-Fi based lightstrips, making it eco-friendly and cost-efficient. It also serves as a repeater of the Zigbee network, which further strengthens network reliability and responsiveness. With a compatible Aqara hub such as the Hub M2, the LED Strip T1 supports the new IoT standard Matter as well as popular systems like Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and IFTTT, and can be controlled by major voice assistants.

The LED Strip T1 is 2 meters (ca. 6.6 ft) in length, and can be extended using the Company’s 1-meter Extension Kit. It supports a maximum length of 10 meters (ca. 33 ft). The lightstrip can be cut at 20 centimeter (ca. 7.9 in) intervals, making it highly customizable. The cut or unused part of the lightstrip can also be reattached to a separate Aqara LED lightstrip using extra standard 5-core ribbon cables and 5-pin connectors.

More importantly, the RGB effects of the LED Strip T1 are independently addressable with a 20-centimeter interval, which means that it can display up to 10 different colors with dimming and other effects6. The Aqara Home app provides various built-in effects for the LED strip – both static and dynamic- and allows users to customize the lighting effects as they prefer. All these built-in and customized effects can be used for home automations and scenes so that users can integrate smart lighting into the holistic smart home experience.

For example, users can amplify the home alert system with the LED strip, using different colors or effects to indicate whether the security system is armed or not and if there is a potential threat. It’s also possible to create customized home scenes, such as an evening scene with warm lighting or an entertainment scene that dims the lighting for a better movie watching experience. The Aqara Home app recently introduced a new feature allowing users to sync the scenes to HomeKit7. This means that users can set up specific scenes that were previously only available via Aqara app and be able to control these scenes with third-party apps such as Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Home.

Philly starts replacing its street lights with efficient LEDs

The long-awaited conversion of more than 100,000 Philadelphia street lights to LEDs has started this month. The project is expected to improve safety and quality of life in places plagued by street light outages.

City officials say the project will also mean major energy savings and help reduce the city’s carbon footprint. The Philly Streetlight Improvement Project will convert 120,000 old, high-pressure sodium streetlights into a network of efficient, longer-lasting LED lights. By upgrading to better quality lights with a new lighting management system, residents will benefit from better visibility and faster lighting replacement times.

The quasi-governmental Philadelphia Energy Authority issued the bond to pay for the effort, which will cost over $90 million but is expected to save the city more than $200 million over the life of the project.

Marelli launches h-Digi microLED

Marelli, together with ams OSRAM launches a ground-breaking innovation in automotive front lighting, introducing the h-Digi microLED module, which is now in series production. This digital lighting solution, based on a new type of intelligent multipixel LED, enables fully adaptive, dynamic headlight operation and image projection, while being an affordable technology, available for a wider range of vehicles.   

The new high-resolution module h-Digi microLED is based on a matrix illumination system – featuring around 40,000 LED pixels (20,000 per lamp). This intelligent solution manages the LEDs selectively to create very flexible low-beam and high-beam light distributions, adapting to various driving situations: Town, Country, Motorway or Adverse weather light options can be realized.

It also provides dynamic curve light and very precise glare-free high beam block out zones, to avoid blinding oncoming drivers. Furthermore, in terms of safety, the Marelli h-Digi® microLED can project warnings or driver assistance images on the road, directly in the driver's field of view. Other advantages include the extremely compact design and high energy efficiency.

The Marelli microLED system is based on ams OSRAM's light source EVIYOS 2.0. Its combination with a special optical lens system and a new electronic control engineered by Marelli's Automotive Lighting & Sensing division, enables the enhanced level of adaptability of the illumination field. This is the first time that LEDs with a size of 40 µm x 40 µm are introduced as pixel elements in vehicle headlamps. With EVIYOS 2.0, ams OSRAM made this technology available for the automotive use, which was a decisive factor for the Marelli-ams OSRAM partnership in this project.

With pixels smaller than 0,1 degree, the resolution of this illumination matrix system is 10 times more precise than conventional LED glare-free high beam systems, which are currently on the road. Two micro-LED options are available: an aspect ratio of 1:4, resulting in 25,600 pixels, or an aspect ratio of 1:3, providing 19,200 pixels per lamp.

HC Semitek Kicks-Off Giant MicroLED Fab

HC Semitek announced the kick-off ceremony for its MicroLED wafer manufacturing, packaging, and testing project in Jinwan District, Zhuhai, China.

HC Semitek is in a strategic relationship with BOE, which is supporting the facility, as well as it having the backing of HC Semitek’s parent company, Huacan Optoelectronics.

The total project is expected to cost 5 billion yuan and is then expected to achieve an annual output of 5 billion yuan upon completion of the two phases of the project.

The fab is to have an annual production capacity of 58,800 MicroLED wafers and 45,000,000 MicroLED devices.

Dialight's new auxiliary battery backup solution features a sleek, lower profile enclosure and can provide illumination for a minimum of 90 minutes in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 101 guidance on emergency lighting. Furthermore, it has been certified for use in a sealed enclosure to ensure maximum protection against harsh environmental conditions common in industrial settings and has been vibration tested to IEC 60068-2-6. It is compatible with all existing Dialight Area Light mounting options and at merely 20lbs is easy to install and to replace auxiliary batteries as needed.

Cree LED Announces Fourth Gen XLamp XP-G Product Family

Cree LED unveiled the fourth generation of its industry-leading XLamp XP-G product family. With more than two billion XP-G LEDs shipped to date, the highly anticipated XP-G4 incorporates the latest advancements in high-power LED technology for improved optical performance while delivering leading efficacy. Global Hazardous Location LED Lighting Markets: How SSL LEDs Drive Demand

Unsafe lighting is one of the most common potential sources of ignition causing an explosion. Working environments that contain explosive gases or dust are extremely volatile environments. A variety of luminaires (light fixture + LED light source) are available that are considered suitable for hazardous locations since they prevent any possible ignition sources from being exposed to the air.

In various lighting applications, hazardous locations are defined as areas that are at risk of fire or explosion due to the combined presence of electrical equipment and flammable gases or vapors, flammable liquids, combustible dust, ignitable fibers, or other substances.

In the process of this market research project, in addition to interviewing existing customers and potential customers of LED-based hazardous location lighting, we also studied lighting manufacturers with various ranges of hazardous area lighting products. The luminaires are designed for locations where explosive gases and dust are found, providing suitable lighting without enabling a risk of explosion.

The emergence of solid-state lighting (SSL) light emitting diodes (LEDs) in the general lighting industry continues to push lighting-industry vendors, as well as end-users, to consider innovative solutions (new products) to adopt hazardous location LED lighting solutions.

The light emitting diode (LED) market, despite exciting innovative devices driven by technological advances and ecological/energy-saving concerns, still face challenges in overcoming performance/price limitations and in attracting widespread consumption.

New Decorative Lighting to Shine in Ocean City

Ocean City ia installing new decorative lighting in the downtown. The new lighting would not only illuminate the shopping district, but also replace the fixtures that are not tall enough to provide adequate height for the swag, bows and garland, that create the festive atmosphere each year.

City Council approved a resolution at Thursday night’s Council meeting to go out to bid for light improvements along Asbury Avenue from Eighth to 10th Streets.

The project would cost an estimated $1 million for every two blocks of new lighting.
