Scientists light up blue LED with an AA battery

Scientists at the Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT), in collaboration with other universities in Japan, have developed a novel organic light-emitting diode (LED) that emits blue fluorescence but has a low turn-on voltage.

An RGB LED module can produce any color for the display by using three colors: red, green, and blue. While red and green LEDs work well, the blue LED has been tricky from an energy efficiency perspective.

Conventionally used blue LEDs have a high turn-on voltage of 4V for a luminance of 100 cd per square meter (cd/m2). This might not sound very high, but at the industrial level, it brings about issues since the voltage is beyond what can be supplied by a typical lithium-ion battery.

UV-C LEDs have advanced on a wave of interest in disinfection technology

Advances in ultraviolet C-band (UV-C) LED performance have accelerated in the past five years. Coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic and awareness around touchless disinfection, activity in the germicidal UV space has led to more comparisons between UV-C LEDs and mercury lamps.

One recent debate has been on the wall plug efficiency (WPE) of UV-C LEDs compared to legacy disinfection technology. WPE is the ability of a device to convert energy into light. Some industry stakeholders have proposed that UV-C LED adoption in germicidal UV (GUV) applications will be limited until the devices can match the performance of existing commercial mercury lamps .

The current WPE of UV-C LEDs is in the single digits, with most commercially available UV-C LEDs in the range of 3% to 6% depending on the product . Although WPE is an important metric, it is not the sole measure of progress for this technology. Improved LED efficiency can be achieved at multiple points within the device, commonly categorized as either internal or external efficiency.

Researchers develop a novel method to generate deep-UV light

A new device can generate deep-UV light with a very narrow wavelength range that is safe for humans but lethal for germs.

This device can generate deep-UV light with a very narrow wavelength range that is safe for humans but lethal for germs. The researchers have overcome these challenges by using a process called ‘second harmonic generation,’ which relies on the fact that the frequency of a photon, or particle of light, is proportional to its energy.

By using a specially designed waveguide that can control the orientation of the aluminum-nitride crystal, the researchers were able to merge two photons with half the energy into one photon with twice the energy, and thus, twice the frequency. This way, they could produce deep-UV light with a very narrow wavelength range that is safe for humans but lethal for germs.

Wavelength conversion device using polarity inverted AlN structure. Hiroto Honda, the study's lead author, explains that their novel approach to generating deep-UV light incorporates methods from semiconductor manufacturing. This enables accurate manipulation of the aluminum-nitride crystal's orientation, a feat that was challenging to accomplish previously.

New LED design for next-level realism in immersive displays

Researchers of Meijo University and King Abdullah University have developed cheap and ultra-small LEDs that can display full-color images at high resolution for immersive reality applications1. The LEDs are based on gallium indium nitride semiconductors, which are versatile materials that can emit different colors of light.

The researchers stacked blue, green, and red micro-LED arrays on the same wafer, connected by tunnel junctions, and achieved a pixel density of 330 pixels per inch.

The LEDs showed low resistance and clear color distinction, but had some defects that could be improved by optimizing the crystal growth conditions.

This work has minimized the common limitations of past LEDs based on gallium indium nitride technology.

Hence, regular retrofitting of grow lights after a thorough assessment of the existing lighting system is essential.

Growers prefer to use high-quality grow lights in their farms, and LED grow lights have become a popular choice due to their advantages. LED grow lights emit less heat compared to traditional lighting options like CFLs and HID bulbs, leading to reduced power consumption and increased crop productivity. Retrofitting HID lamps with LED grow lights offers higher efficiency, lighter weight, and longer lifespan, making it a favorable option for growers seeking higher yields and profitability. Governments and companies are introducing various incentive programs and product launches to encourage growers to shift from traditional to energy-efficient LED lights. For example, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) offers an enhanced LED Grow Light incentive to greenhouses in specific areas of Canada through the Save on Energy Retrofit program. These initiatives aim to support new greenhouse projects and encourage the adoption of energy-efficient lighting technologies in agricultural operations.

Large formate LED screens at Nassau Cruise Port

As part of a massive four-year revitalization project to upgrade and expand its port system, Nassau’s international cruise gateway Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) added two LED video displays to the highly trafficked port area. Now the second-busiest cruise port in the world, the enhanced NCP can accommodate up to six cruise vessels, including three of the world’s largest Oasis-class vessels simultaneously ― a daily capacity of 30,000 visitors.

Both of the new large-format LED displays were built from SNA Displays’ EMPIRE™ Exterior line of video display technology. The screen at the Nassau Port arrivals gate is 22′ tall and 45′ wide (1,008 x 2,064 pixels). Directed at cruise ship passengers to welcome guests as one of their first touchpoints on the island, the arrivals display features a curve with a nine-foot radius to follow the building’s façade.

An additional video display measuring 22’10” x 29’5″ (1,044 x 1,344 pixels) was installed on the façade of Nassau’s newly built Educulture Junkanoo Museum in the port city’s downtown area. Video content on the screen largely reflects the museum’s emphasis on honoring Nassau’s culture and heritage.

Philips Hue Secure cameras are available in both a battery and wired version, as well as in the colors black or white. The Secure wired camera can be used with a convenient desktop stand, giving you optimal flexibility to place it around the home. Both cameras can also be placed outside with the Secure camera mount with ground spike and can be easily connected to Philips Hue's existing low-voltage outdoor system.

Specifically developed for outdoor use, the Philips Hue Secure floodlight camera brings the best of the Philips Hue system together. It allows you to keep an eye on the backyard, patio, or driveway, and — when you trigger a light alarm from the Philips Hue app — the floodlight immediately illuminates a large area in any color, such as bright white or even red.

For all Philips Hue Secure cameras, a low-voltage outdoor charging cable and anti-drop cable are available.

The Philips Hue Secure contact sensor — which can be used on doors, windows, cabinets, and more and is available in the colors black or white — sends real-time notifications when the contact sensor is opened or closed. For example, you can program your front door contact sensor to turn on your hallway lights and send a notification, so you can immediately check for potential intruders. You can also use the contact sensor to simply automate your lights anywhere else in the home: for example, you can program your lights to turn on and off when you open and close a cabinet or bathroom door.

Martin Kuhn chooses Ayrton Cobra for Istanbul’s Maiden’s Tower Show

Istanbul’s Maiden’s Tower is the most iconic and important building for the city’s inhabitants, with a long history stretching back beyond 1423 when it first received its name.

During its complete renovation, the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism commissioned contractors ASTEL to conduct an international competition for a light show that should highlight the Tower, be widely seen around Istanbul and run fully-automated every night.

The contract was won by Martin Kuhn of MKLD Lighting Design & Consulting of Berlin, who conceived the idea of telling the Tower’s story using light to accompany the narrative in the manner of a theatre piece or performance.

The lighting project was incorporated into the building refurbishment, and included all the architectural lighting, which served a dual purpose for both the show and the general architectural look at night.
