LED streetlights are designed to provide a brighter light across the spectrum when working properly.  When the light malfunctions, it typically flickers slowly or flashes rapidly, resembling a strobe light.  

The exposure to a strobe light can cause “flicker vertigo” which can trigger several symptoms including disorientation, nausea, rapid blinking, and muscle rigidity.  The symptoms, according to research, are typically temporary and disappear when the individual is removed from the area.  Flicker vertigo symptoms are similar to those associated with epilepsy.

ams OSRAM releases RGB versions of high-power OSTAR Projection Compact LEDs

ams OSRAM adds Red, True Green and Blue colors to its OSTAR Projection Compact family of low-profile, ultra-high brightness LEDs, to enable manufacturers of machine vision systems or stage lighting fixtures to create more powerful and slimmer products. ams OSRAM already offered a White option in this package specification, that time known as OSLON Boost.

The new LEDs are ideal for premium high-power lighting products because of their high current density and very high brightness. Featuring a new rectangular ams OSRAM 2 mm2 chip, these LEDs produce very high luminous output – the True Green version is the brightest 520 nm product in its class (1000 lm at 6 A).

The OSTAR Projection Compact LEDs can be packed very closely together in high-power luminaire designs because of their excellent thermal dissipation and small, flat package. The thermal resistance is just 1.4 K/W, while the 4040 package has dimensions of 4.0 mm x 4.0 mm x 0.75 mm. The LEDs’ low profile enables lighting equipment and vision system manufacturers to reduce the size of their products without compromising brightness and performance.

Boathouse Row will remain dark through early 2024

The iconic bright lights of Philadelphia’s Boathouse Row will remain dark for a longer period than originally planned.

The LED lights that have long illuminated the historic landmark are now expected to turn back on sometime in early 2024, according to a statement from the Fairmount Park Conservancy, which is overseeing the upgrades in partnership with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation 123.

The $2.1 million project to upgrade and replace Boathouse Row’s LED lights was originally expected to be completed by the end of 2023, but due to supply chain issues, the project will now stretch into the first quarter of 2024.

Bismarck to speed up LED streetlight project

The city of Bismarck (North Dakota) is accelerating its plan to replace all its streetlights with LED lights, which are more energy-efficient and provide better visibility. The project, which started in 2013, aims to convert nearly 10,000 streetlights from High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lights to Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs).

Bismarck Traffic Maintenance Superintendent Paul Lies said the city decided to finish the project in two years, instead of four, because of the high demand from residents who have seen the benefits of LED lights.

Many residents have praised the LED lights, while some have complained that they are too bright. Lies said the brightness can be adjusted by changing the angle of the fixture. He also said the LED lights are cheaper and more durable than the HPS lights, which have become scarce and expensive in recent years.

The city has already converted about 4,700 streetlights to LEDs and plans to do the remaining 5,000 in 2024 and 20255.

MLGW ‘working hard to correct’ new LED streetlamps in Memphis

If you’ve noticed that some of the new LED streetlights in Memphis are not functioning properly, you’re not alone. Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) has identified 1,716 new lights that are not working correctly for various reasons, and crews are working to fix them.

According to a report by Action News 5, some of these dysfunctional streetlamps were seen blinking rapidly in different areas along Walnut Grove, causing an obnoxious and hazardous distraction for drivers .

Since January, MLGW has upgraded 66,272 of 77,280 streetlights in Memphis with LED lights 1. More than 65,000 lamps have been converted to LED so far, with just over 12,000 left to be upgraded 12. The project, which was first announced in July 2022, is a partnership between MLGW and Ameresco, costing $34 million.

The accelerated adoption of LEDs among commercial cannabis growers continued to be a dominant theme in this year’s report. For the second year in a row, at least 70% of study participants from commercial indoor or greenhouse operations with supplemental lighting used LEDs in propagation, vegetation or flowering. Under LED technology, this year’s survey also revealed that 66% of commercial growers reported a yield of more than 50 grams per square foot of canopy—an increase of 11 percentage points from 2022.

Growers in this year’s survey who are not planning to use LEDs in cannabis flowering cited fears related to return on investment and capital expenditures. Yet more than half of survey respondents (56%) haven’t explored rebates, which are one of the most effective cost-saving tools available to growers making capital investments—while another quarter of respondents (24%) are aware of rebates but don’t plan to apply for one. Signify accelerates the transition to energy efficient lighting

Signify has introduced Philips MASTER LED SON-T UltraEfficient (UE). Additionally, Signify is further extending its UltraEfficient LED range with the dimmable MASTER LEDbulbs UE and A-class MASTER LEDspots UE.

The new products meet the highest energy label, ‘A’, under the EU’s Ecodesign Regulation, and the Energy Labelling Regulation, which recently came into force. As A-class products, these new bulbs, spots, and lamps consume at least 43% less power to achieve the same output as standard alternative products.

The new Philips MASTER LED SON-T UE lamps are the first A-class LED SON-T lamps with a color temperature of 4,000K registered in Europe. When upgrading from conventional HID lamps, a potential full return on investment can be achieved in 2.3 years3. The lamps are nondirectional and non-dimmable E27/E40 lamps, with a lumen range between 4,000 lm and 9,000 lm.

The new A-class MASTER LEDbulbs UE and A-class MASTER LEDspots UE GU10 consume at least 45% less energy, compared to standard LED alternatives, as well as lasting at least three times as long [2],[4]. Additionally, the A-class MASTER LEDbulbs UE are now dimmable, allowing for customizable lighting experiences.

ams OSRAM signs close to EUR 450 million of infrastructure related asset transactions

ams OSRAM signed Sale and Leaseback agreements totaling up to Malaysian Ringgit 2 billion (approximately EUR 400 million) in gross proceeds (“Lease Financing”).

The Sale and Leaseback transaction is part of the previously announced financing plan and limited to the newly constructed Kulim 8-inch semiconductor facility’s primary and secondary structures.

On September 27, 2023 ams OSRAM announced its financing plan of EUR 2.25 billion, with around EUR 1.9 billion expected to be financed in the coming months comprising of EUR 800 million capital raise, around EUR 800 million in new senior bond issuances and around EUR 300 million asset-level transactions. These asset-level transactions are now expected to yield close to EUR 450 million in proceeds. The Kulim 8-inch facility Sale and Leaseback transaction is the key element amongst these asset-level transactions.

In 2022, ams OSRAM started an approximately EUR 1 billion investment in manufacturing, facilities and R&D for state-of-the-art LED and microLED. The new facility in Kulim is expected to be the world’s first fully automated 8-inch LED manufacturing facility. Marking the 10th year of the Tree Lighting Festival, and the 3rd with Charlotte FC since the franchise's inception, this year's festival returns to the corner of Mint Street and Graham Street outside of Bank of America Stadium, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The event is free, but mobile tickets are required to attend. Seoul Semiconductor has signed a MicroLED patent license agreement with SiliconCore of the United States, strengthening its position in virtual production applications using MicroLED displays.

The deal, signed in September but recently brought to light by The Elec, provides Seoul Semiconductor access to 36 Silicon Core patents related to MicroLED technology.

At Display Week 2023, Seoul Semiconductor exhibited its own Wicop Pixel MicroLED technology. The company has touted the possibilities for Wicop Pixel beyond displays, including virtual production and automotive applications.

The Public Service Company of Oklahoma is set to distribute 122,000 free LED bulbs to Oklahoma families this year through its Shine a Light program.
