5% Dip Predicted in 2023 Revenues for Top 10 Lighting Giants

TrendForce’s lighting market research indicates a noticeable improvement in inventory depletion for lighting companies compared to the first half of 2023. Growth has been seen in outdoor lighting orders and renovation projects. However, demand remains subdued across most retail, indoor lighting, and specialized lighting sectors.

The gloomy global economy this year has also led to a consolidation phase in the lighting market, resulting in stable overall demand. Consequently, TrendForce anticipates a slight YoY decrease of about 5% in the revenues of the world’s top ten lighting manufacturers for 2023. Despite the ongoing uncertainty in the lighting market, after two years of adjustment, a resurgence in demand is anticipated in the second quarter of 2024.

The third quarter performance of various companies suggests slight revenue recovery. The top ten lighting companies’ combined revenues reached US$5.2 billion, a slight QoQ increase of 0.8%. Signify, Acuity Brands and Panasonic lead the top three, collectively accounting for about 63% of the total revenue. Except for the swap in rankings between LEDVANCE and MLS Lighting with Panasonic, the rest maintained their positions from previous quarters.

Signify’s third-quarter revenue was approximately US$1.75 billion, a 2.5% decrease from the previous quarter. This decline in revenue is primarily attributed to continuous weak demand in retail and indoor lighting, as well as a slowdown in OEM sales. The company saw significant revenue dips in key European markets, such as Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and the UK, and also in North American markets, including the US and Canada. Recovery in the Chinese market also fell short of expectations.

Acuity Brands reported close to US$1 billion in revenue for the third quarter, down 1% from the previous quarter. This decline in lighting revenue was linked to extended product replacement cycles and the overall economic downturn. Still, the company maintains its position in the global top three, representing roughly 20% of total revenue among the top ten lighting manufacturers. In 2023’s first half, Acuity Brands launched its innovative Design Select project to offer customers high-quality lighting products and solutions. This initiative includes around 3,000 selectable products from leading brands such as Aculux, Gotham, Lithonia, nLight, and SensorSwitch.

Overseas operations now contribute over 50% to MLS Lighting’s overall revenue following its acquisition of LEDVANCE. For the first three quarters of 2023, lighting sales constituted 73% of total revenue, with the latter half primarily bolstered by seasonal demand in China’s lighting industry. However, a saturated overseas market has restrained growth, reflected in MLS Lighting’s third-quarter performance, which saw a modest increase of about 2.3%. Notably, LEDVANCE performed well in China’s industrial lighting market in the first half of 2023. With strategic positioning and product upgrades, LEDVANCE’s annual lighting revenue is expected to grow throughout the year.

Next generation blue light could potentially promote or hinder sleep on command

Blue light from LED lamps and consumer electronics can interfere with the production of the natural sleep hormone melatonin, which can disrupt sleep. Tinted glasses or displays in night mode can mask, but not remove, a portion of the disruptive wavelengths. However, researchers have designed more “human-centric” LEDs that could potentially enhance drowsiness or alertness on command.

Humans have evolved over millennia to be active during the day and to rest at night; we’ve depended on the sun to regulate our sleep/wake cycle. But many people today spend the majority of their time indoors, shielded from the sun, so it’s harder for them to maintain that optimal 24-hour circadian rhythm Exposure to artificial light can worsen this problem because it can decrease the secretion of melatonin.

Blue light ranges in wavelength from 380 to 500 nanometers (nm), but not all blue light is created equal. The wavelengths that suppress melatonin production—and cause wakefulness—are in the range of 460 to 500 nm. So, researchers have designed two LEDs that emit different wavelengths of blue light. One LED, intended for daytime use, restricts its blue emissions to wavelengths close to 475 nm. The other LED, for evening use, emits blue wavelengths near 450 nm, outside the range that disturbs sleep.

Opera Launches Updated Lucid Mode and Sunrise-Emulating Wallpapers

Winter has descended upon the Northern Hemisphere, including the headquarters of Opera in Oslo. Further north, polar night kicks off this evening in Narvik, Norway, blanketing the area in a deep blue until January. Days spent in cold and darkness lead many people to suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, which lowers their mood and causes sluggishness.

Studies have shown that poor video quality is linked to negative emotional responses in viewers – not the sort of feelings with which we want to saddle ourselves during an already trying time. That's why, just in time for the short days of December, Opera has improved its Lucid Mode – a feature that provides videos with better-than-ever brightness, sharpness, and clarity. Not only has the underlying technology been upgraded – resulting in better browser performance and battery life – but users can now control the extent of video enhancement within Settings. Once they configure the video quality to their specifications, users can – by hovering on the Lucid Mode button on any video – click a slider that allows them to see the crispness boosted in real time.

First identified by Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal in 1984, SAD is a condition that afflicts tens of millions of people around the world. Often called winter depression, SAD affects as many as twenty percent of adults to some greater or lesser degree, with symptoms including less energy, difficulty concentrating, and feeling generally down.

On top of introducing an improved Lucid Mode, Opera has also created a special, luminous Sunrise wallpaper, designed to combat the winter blues by showering users with light. It may not be a substitute for a SAD lamp, but it's the best we could do from a software perspective – for now!

LED Tester Also Calculates Resistor For Target Voltage

mircemk built a slick-looking LED tester with a couple handy functions built in. Not only can one select a target current to put through an LED, but by providing a target voltage, the system will automatically calculate the necessary series resistor. If for example the LED is destined for 14 V, this device will not only show how the LED looks at the chosen current, but will calculate the required resistor to get the same results on a 14 V system.

Proprietary LED Technology Empowering High-end Cinema

With the gradual decrease in the pandemic, there is a gradual resurgence in the global demand for cinema visits. In recent years, as audience expectations for audio-visual experiences have risen, LED display screens, offering superior visual performance, have gained popularity in the film industry. They are increasingly favored by more high-end cinemas to meet the growing demand for enhanced viewing experiences.

The majority of cinemas still utilize traditional projection technology, which falls behind laser projection and LED screens in terms of color reproduction, contrast, 3D effects, and other display characteristics. Clearly, to meet the growing demands of audiences, traditional projection technology is showing signs of weakness. Many mid- & high-end cinemas are turning their attention to technologies that offer superior display effects.

AOTO Electronics has adeptly responded by independently developing LED cinema display technology. AOTO LED cinema display technology effortlessly achieves a 4K high resolution, providing 4 times the clarity of traditional projection technology (2K). This capability not only allows for larger screens but also presents richer details, delivering a more impactful and lifelike cinematic experience for the audience.

Traditional projection technology often encounters motion blur when playing high-dynamic scenes due to insufficient frame rates (e.g., 24 frames motion blur). However, AOTO's proprietary LED cinema technology supports up to 120 frames in 2D, delivering a more immersive cinematic experience with a crystal-clear view of high dynamic details.

Traditional projection technology often falls short in brightness, making the displayed content susceptible to interference from external light sources. This is why cinemas typically dim all ambient lights when starting a movie. AOTO's LED cinema screen easily achieves 300nits, surpassing the brightness of regular global cinemas by 6 times. Not only is it less affected by external light sources, but it also provides audiences with enhanced HDR effects, immersing them in the authentic experience of a sunset gradually fading away.

Researchers triple carbon nanotube yield for LEDs

Skoltech scientists have discovered a way to improve the yield of single-walled carbon nanotube films, which are used in a variety of applications such as solar cells, LEDs, flexible and transparent electronics, smart textiles, medical imaging, toxic gas detectors, and filtration systems.

By adding hydrogen gas along with carbon monoxide to the reaction chamber, the team was able to almost triple the carbon nanotube yield compared to when other growth promoters are used, without compromising quality 1. Until now, low yield has been the bottleneck limiting the potential of that manufacturing technology, otherwise known for high product quality 1. The study has been published in the Chemical Engineering Journal.

Carbon nanotubes are a form of carbon where sheets of atoms in a honeycomb arrangement—known as graphene—are seamlessly rolled into hollow cylinders 1. They vary in length, diameter, and so-called chirality (how the honeycomb pattern is “skewed”), as well as whether the tube is single-walled or has other, wider tubes around it, making it “multiwalled”. The properties of carbon nanotubes vary widely based on the above parameters. Chirality, for example, controls their electrical conductivity 1. Carbon nanotubes are manufactured as powder, thin films, fibers, and in other forms, depending on the application they are intended for.

Northampton to act on outdoor lighting rules

The city of Northampton plans to vote on a new outdoor lighting policy before the year ends and a new City Council forms.

The policy aims to reduce light pollution and improve night-time safety by setting new standards for outdoor lighting in the city.

The standards would require that new lights have full cut-off fixtures, use LED bulbs, and have the minimum lumens needed. The policy would not affect existing city lights, but would likely apply to the Picture Main Street project, which involves installing new lights on wider sidewalks.

The policy has been in the works for several years, with some interruptions. It would have some exceptions, such as temporary lighting for events, pool lighting, and athletic field lighting.

LED Lighting Market revenue to hit USD 374.5 Billion by 2035

The global led lighting market size is projected to grow at a CAGR of over 14% from 2023 to 2035. The market is expected to garner a revenue of USD 374.45 billion by the end of 2035, up from a revenue of USD 74.16 billion in the year 2022.

The growing demand for IoT-connected devices is the major factor that is boosting the market growth. Smart LED lighting blends energy saving with the accessibility, intelligence, and intelligence benefits of connectivity.

IoT solutions for connected lighting must match users' expectations for simplicity, dependability, and security. Around 11 million smart wireless LED bulbs were shipped globally in 2018, with over 50 million expected by 2020. Lighting components characteristic sensors that process and gather data via an IoT network (cloud computing or locally) to enable remote control and management via mobile or online applications.

Lighting alone accounts for 19% of total global electricity use. Cities that pollute the night sky with light consume 60-80% of the world's energy. We must reduce our energy consumption if the world is to move towards a cleaner future. The most straightforward method to accomplish this is to keep trying to increase lighting efficiency. New bulbs, control systems, and lighting schemes can have a significant impact on both commercial and residential buildings, saving both energy and money. LED lights generally consume 50-90 percent less energy than comparable conventional or halogen bulbs. A 100 W (Watt) incandescent bulb, for example, can be substituted with a 9 W LED bulb with comparable light output performance.

LED lights create new distraction for drivers

LED streetlights are designed to provide a brighter light across the spectrum when working properly.  When the light malfunctions, it typically flickers slowly or flashes rapidly, resembling a strobe light.

The exposure to a strobe light can cause “flicker vertigo” which can trigger several symptoms including disorientation, nausea, rapid blinking, and muscle rigidity.  The symptoms, according to research, are typically temporary and disappear when the individual is removed from the area.  Flicker vertigo symptoms are similar to those associated with epilepsy.
