New dynamic LED toplight launched
Oreon has introduced its new toplight, The Oreon Monarch 3-Channel LED. The 3-Channel combines high output and efficiency of the existing Monarch with spectral flexibility.
With the Monarch, it was already possible to fluctuate the intensity throughout the day. This allows growers to use the power of the sun, but to avoid hours when electricity prices are high.
With dynamic lighting, Oreon intends to respond to the need for different colors of light during the day or throughout the seasons. Whether it's adding far-red or increasing white light intensity, there are many possibilities.
The Monarch 3-Channel has a maximum input of 1260W. This power is variably distributed to 1, 2 or 3 channels. The main channel can convert a maximum of 1260W into light, the other two channels each have a maximum output of 140W. The spectrum of all channels can be determined by growers and each channel can be dimmed individually.
The 3-Channel is controllable via the Oreon LED Control Center (OLCC™) and operates based on the industry-developed Horti Lighting Protocol (HLP). This combination controls lighting with unparalleled precision. A proven Bluetooth SIG MESH network dynamically controls all lights in the greenhouse with infinite grouping options. This allows response to fluctuating lighting needs and energy rates. The OLCC also provides information on each individual lamp, such as temperature, voltage, and power consumption.

NIR Light in Smartwatches Could Provide Noninvasive Blood Glucose Monitoring
Blood glucose measurements (BGL) measurements typically involve drawing blood through a finger prick, but researchers want to leverage modern electronics to develop less painful and noninvasive alternatives. In a new study, published in the Journal of Biomedical Optics, a research team turns to near-infrared light (NIR) measurements to estimate BGL.
The team began by extracting oxyhemoglobin (HbO2) and deoxyhemoglobin (Hb) signals from NIR measurements. By analyzing this data, they determined that the phase delay between the low-frequency and oscillating components of HbO2 and Hb signals are closely linked to the degree of oxygen consumption during each cardiac cycle—an important metabolism indicator.
To test their newfound metabolic index, researchers placed an NIR sensor from a smartwatch over the finger of healthy participants at rest. The participants then consumed different sugary and sugar-free beverages, allowing the team to measure blood glucose changes. Excitingly, the changes in metabolic index matched variations in blood glucose as measured by a commercial continuous glucose monitor.

MICLEDI Microdisplays Raises Series A Funding to Advance Best-in-Class microLED Display Design and Manufacturing
MICLEDI Microdisplays announced a first closing of its Series A funding round with participation from imec.xpand, PMV, imec, KBC and SFPIM demonstrating strong support for the company’s value proposition and commercial and technological progress achieved in the seed round. Series A follows a significant seed round award and additional non-dilutive funding in the form of grants and other vehicles from VLAIO. This brings the company’s total funding to date to nearly $30 million.
'The company’s achievements during this seed round have been astounding,' said Sean Lord, CEO of MICLEDI. “Our door is open to engagements with some of the world’s largest and most innovative electronic product manufacturing companies, most of whom are working on their own internal development projects for augmented reality (AR) displays in such diverse use cases as smart-wearable devices and automotive HUDs. This level of total funding to date is almost unheard of for a four-year-old startup.'
MICLEDI used the seed round to validate a unique 300mm wafer manufacturing methodology, the first in the world at 300mm. Seed funding also enabled the company to prove best-in-class blue and green GAN-based microLED arrays with pixel-by-pixel microlenses in its unique 300mm flow. The company also demonstrated solid red performance using red GAN material with early proof of superior performance based on red AlInGaP. All three colors, R, G, & B, were demonstrated to large audiences at CES 2024 and SPIE AR-VR-MR 2024.
Industry experts agree that GAN-based material technology is the only pathway to RGB microLED displays that are bright enough to meet the demands of AR as well as other related applications of microdisplays. MICLEDI, in conjunction with key customers, has launched specialty displays to serve these applications while continuing its primary focus on AR for consumer applications. MICLEDI and Global Foundries (GF) agree to transfer the company’s unique microLED manufacturing flow into GF’s CMOS fab in conjunction with backplane ASICs designed in GF’s advanced CMOS process nodes, also a first in the microLED industry as part of the enablement of cost and volume demands of the burgeoning AR market.

Southern Oregon's Lake County Outback Named World's Largest Dark Sky Sanctuary
A 2.5-million-acre area of southeastern Oregon was certified as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary by DarkSky International, making it the world's largest Dark Sky Sanctuary to date. The Sanctuary, which is approximately one-half the size of New Jersey and is located within an area commonly referred to as the Oregon Outback, has committed to protect its starry night skies for the benefit of visitors, residents, and wildlife.
A Dark Sky Sanctuary is a certification given by the DarkSky International to public or private land that has an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is protected for its scientific, natural, or educational value, its cultural heritage, and/or public enjoyment. To qualify as a Dark Sky Sanctuary, the area must meet strict criteria for sky quality, commit to protecting the night sky through responsible lighting practices, and provide public outreach. These sanctuaries provide opportunities for stargazing, astrophotography, and other nighttime activities that benefit from minimal light pollution.
The Outback is located within the largest, contiguous, pristine dark sky zone in the lower 48 states, and this certification helps to protect a large portion of the designated zone. Within the Oregon Outback International Dark Sky Sanctuary (OOIDSS) are the unincorporated communities of Adel, Plush, and Summer Lake, the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, a portion of the Fremont-Winema National Forest, nearly 1.7 million acres of land managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's Summer Lake Wildlife Area, nearly 80,000 acres of state-owned rangeland, and the Oregon Outback Scenic Byway.
The intentions behind pursuing a large-scale sanctuary are to protect much of the unique, pristine, dark sky zone, to keep any additional dark sky recreation dispersed (as it is now), to allow a number of incorporated gateway communities to economically benefit from the same project, and to more effectively and efficiently manage a certification within a remote area.

Automotive-Compliant, Three-Channel, Linear LED Driver from Diodes Incorporated Provides Independent Controls for Brightness and Color
Diodes Incorporated (Diodes) releases a new automotive-compliant linear LED driver that enables users to independently control the brightness and color of its three channels.
Human-centric automotive design is driving the demand for multi-channel LED drivers, which allow vehicle occupants to easily change interior lighting colors to match their mood. By simultaneously enabling animated turning-indicator signals and exterior grill lighting for different road conditions, these drivers help increase safety levels. The AL1783Q driver has LED current settings by an external REF pin, independent dimming controls for each channel, and pulse width modulation (PWM) to perform LED dimming. It is well-suited for multiple interior and exterior lighting applications in electric vehicles (EV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
The automotive industry is trending towards using higher voltage rails to power vehicle subsystems and this has seen battery voltages increasing from 12V and 24V to 48V. In response to this development, the AL1783Q has been designed to operate from a 55V rail, providing it with an advantage over other LED drivers which typically only operate up to 40V. This feature also enables the AL1783Q to support increasing LED chain voltages.
Another advantage of this driver is that it delivers up to 66% more current per channel (250mA compared with a standard 150mA), enabling greater flexibility to support higher LED current ranges in a wider range of lighting applications. For additional flexibility, the current in each of the three channels can be set using individual resistors.
Thermal robustness is an important consideration when designing with linear LED drivers and, for this reason, the AL1783Q is housed in a thermally efficient TSSOP-16EP package that has an exposed cooling pad for superior heat dissipation. For added system level reliability, the AL1783Q has multiple fault detection features including undervoltage lockout (UVLO) and overvoltage protection (OVP), as well as the ability to detect LED open and short circuit conditions.

Global LED Lighting Industry Set to Benefit from an Estimated 5.8 Billion Units of Secondary Replacement Demand for LED Lamps and Luminaires in 2024, Says TrendForce
TrendForce’s latest reports indicate a significant turning point for the LED lighting market in 2024, as an estimated quantity of 5.8 billion LED lamps and luminaires reach the end of their lifespan. This milestone is set to trigger a substantial wave of secondary replacements, breathing new life into the market and boosting total LED lighting demand to an impressive 13.4 billion units.
Currently, LED lamps and luminaries account for about 70% of all lighting solutions in use worldwide, narrowing the scope for replacing traditional fixtures with LED alternatives. Only specific, unique applications continue to rely on non-LED lighting, making the cost of transition increasingly expensive and suggesting that the first wave of replacement may have largely concluded. Despite a dip in shipments of LED lighting products in 2023, the decline hasn’t been drastic, thanks to the rising tide of secondary replacement demand, which has now become the LED market’s key driver.
LEDs are generally designed to last between 25,000 to 40,000 hours, translating to a real-world service life of 7 to 10 years. TrendForce posits that LED lamps and luminaires installed between 2014 and 2016 have begun to hit their lifespan limit from 2023, propelling demand for secondary replacement year after year. This trend is expected to fuel the lighting market’s growth over the next five years, making secondary replacement the dominant force by 2025, and by 2028, they are projected to account for a whopping 78% of LED lighting demand.
However, the road to realizing the potential of secondary replacement demand is fraught with challenges. Many households lack awareness about the need for replacements, with concepts like health-conscious lighting and environmental considerations not yet mainstream. Some potential users are hesitant, adopting a wait-and-see approach. Additionally, a general lack of understanding about the science of lighting and its commercial and artistic value persists in some regions, preventing full appreciation of what modern lighting technology can offer.
Last but not least, product quality varies in the market, and presently, consumers often prioritize price over quality. Down the road, the LED lighting market will progressively step into a more stable, cyclically developing period. In this evolving landscape, brand significance is increasingly highlighted as a key factor in attracting consumer interest in repeat purchases.

ams OSRAM to re-assess its microLED strategy
ams OSRAM revises its microLED strategy with unexpected cancellation of cornerstone project. A non-cash impairment charge of EUR 600-900m, a slightly revised mid-term revenue CAGR of 6-8% on a like-for-like basis, and a positive impact to its cash-flow profile within the next 24 months is expected.
The Management Board of ams OSRAM AG has decided to re-assess the microLED strategy of the company after having been informed of the unexpected cancellation of a cornerstone project for its microLED program. Discussions with the related customer are ongoing.
Following the cancellation of the cornerstone microLED project, the company will revisit the future use of its assets related to its microLED strategy, particularly the new 8-inch LED facility in Kulim (Malaysia). Based on a first, preliminary estimation, ams OSRAM expects to record non-cash impairment charges on microLED related assets and goodwill of EUR 600 to 900 million in the first quarter of fiscal year 2024.
Changes to the capitalization of R&D investments into microLED and reduced subsidies from public funding schemes will impact the operational profitability (adjusted EBIT) for FY2024 by around EUR 30 to 50 million. The company considers additional cost improvements on top of its known ‘Re-Establish-the-Base’ program to further balance this negative impact on Fiscal Year profitability.
The underlying business performance is on track and the company continues to expect first quarter revenues to improve year-over-year on a comparable basis to a level of EUR 800 - 900 million. The adj. EBIT is expected to still come in between 4% to 7% of revenues but will be burdened by the aforementioned changes to capitalization of R&D and reduced subsidies within that range.
The cancellation of the cornerstone project is expected to improve the cash flow profile of the company in the next 24 months, among others due to reduced CAPEX.
The company now assumes on a like-for-like basis (without the non-core portfolio in semiconductors of EUR 300 to 400 million in 2023 and the divestments in the L&S segment in Q1/2023), to grow revenues now with a 6% to 8% CAGR mid-term, as volume sales from its 8-inch LED facility in Kulim can no longer be assumed in that time frame. The company continues to expect that the largest growth contribution will be coming from the strong momentum in its target automotive semiconductor applications, where it is clear market leader, followed by mobile light sensors on the back of the large design-wins that the company secured earlier besides the other growth drivers in industrial, medical, and selected consumer applications.

Seoul Semiconductor Files Patent Infringement Lawsuit against Amazon in the European Unified Patent Court
Seoul Semiconductor Co filed a patent infringement lawsuit in the European Unified Patent Court against Amazon (Amazon Services Europe), the world's largest distribution company, seeking an injunction against the sale of infringing products.
SSC and its affiliates have obtained 15 permanent injunctions for patent infringement against various manufacturers and distributors in the past five years from the U.S., Germany, France, and Netherlands courts. Filing lawsuits in individual countries, however, was a less efficient way to enforce patents against infringing products.
The European Unified Patent Court, which was established in June 2023, has comprehensive jurisdiction over European patent litigation. Injunction and damages orders for patent infringement from the Unified Patent Court can take effect simultaneously in 17 European countries, including Germany, France, and Italy. Consequently, SSC can now prevent the distribution of infringing products throughout Europe with a single lawsuit.
Among the over 18,000 patents held by SSC, the asserted patent in this lawsuit relates to a revolutionary technology that freely adjusts the brightness and color of LED lighting products over time. This solution technology is widely used in smart lighting products and color-tunable lighting. Another asserted patent relates to heat dissipation in LED packages, a crucial technology widely used in automotive lighting where heat dissipation is critical.
