Q-Pixel Debuts the World's Highest Resolution (6800 PPI) Color Display

Los Angeles-based Q-Pixel Inc., a micro-LED display startup, has achieved the highest resolution, active-matrix color display in the world. This display has 3K x 1.5K resolutions in a tiny screen ( ~ 1.1 cm x 0.6 cm) which is smaller than a fingernail.

Q-Pixel's breakthrough display boasts a stunning 6800 pixels per inch (PPI), far surpassing current state-of-the-art displays, such as the Apple Vision Pro (~3380 PPI). Remarkably, Q-Pixel has fabricated their display entirely using microLED pixels, a highly sought-after technology which has been notoriously challenging to implement.

Unlike most advanced VR displays, which use micro-organic LEDs (micro-OLEDs), Q-Pixel's displays consist entirely of III-V compound microLED pixels. Synthesized from inorganic materials, III-V microLEDs offer many advantages over OLEDs, including faster response time, higher brightness, longer lifetime, and superior energy efficiency. From a physics perspective, inorganic III-V microLEDs have long been considered the ideal display technology but have lacked a clear path to commercial viability.

The main challenges to commercializing microLED displays arise from the traditional approach of assembling full color pixels using individual monochromatic red, green, and blue (RGB) LEDs. For high-resolution displays requiring small (< 50 um) pixels, the assembly, testing, and repair of millions of RGB microLED subpixels is a complicated, labor-intensive, and expensive process. Moreover, the physical space required for three RGB subpixels restricts the display's pixel density, posing an obstacle to realizing high-resolution displays. Q-Pixel's overcomes both hurdles by replacing three RGB subpixels with individual, fully color-tunable pixels.

According to Dr. Michelle Chen, CTO of Q-Pixel, this enabling technology is based on a disruptive tunable polychromatic LED (TP-LED) pixel: a single pixel capable of emitting light across the full color spectrum, without any use of subpixels, quantum dots, color filters, polarizers, or mechanical stacking. In addition to possessing all the benefits inherent to III-V LED technology, Q-Pixel's single TP-LED greatly simplifies display assembly, reduces manufacturing costs, and enables world-record pixel densities.

Previously in May 2023, Q-Pixel unveiled their world-record 5000 PPI full-color microLED display, and in November 2023 surpassed their world record with the simultaneous announcement of a passive 10,000 PPI microLED display made from the world's smallest full-color pixels (1 micron diameter), all based on their TP-LED technology.

Now by delivering the world's highest resolution (6800 PPI) active-matrix color display, Q-Pixel has accomplished two major milestones. First, they have proved that it is possible to produce ultra high-resolution, active displays based on the microLED technology. Secondly, Q-Pixel has shown that their TP-LED pixel technology surpasses more mature display technologies such as OLEDs to attain world-record breaking pixel densities. With these latest achievements, Q-Pixel has established themself as a trailblazer in the microLED field and will embark the commercialization of those dazzling displays.

Researchers develop polarized LCD backlighting unit based on semipolar microLEDs and perovskite materials

Researchers from several Universities in China developed a self-polarizing RGB device utilizing semipolar microLEDs and perovskite based films aimed at improving backlight applications.

In standard LCD displays, the backlighting units emits non-polarized light, which then results in an almost 50% light loss as this light has to pass through a polarizer (this is part of the LCD light path). The newly developed high-performance device is designed to emit RGB polarized light which results in higher efficiency and no light-loss dueo to the LCD filter.

Led by Associate Professor Tingzhu Wu, the team engineered a device architecture incorporating blue semipolar microLEDs, which inherently emit polarized light. These LEDs serve as the excitation source for color-conversion layers made from stretched composite films of green and red perovskite nanocrystals. These films exhibit strong polarized emission thanks to their aligned wire structures, further enhanced by encapsulation in a high-dielectric constant material for the red components.

This device design has achieved polarized light emission across the full RGB spectrum with high efficiency and stability, marking a critical advancement in display technology. The green and red perovskite layers maintain their polarization properties under stretch, offering a practical solution for scalable luminescence applications. Furthermore, the device demonstrates a wide color gamut, exceeding standard benchmarks with 137.2% of NTSC and 102.5% of Rec. 2020, alongside impressive Degree of Linear Polarization (DOLP) values across all three colors.

Godox KNOWLED P600R and P1200R RGB LED Panels Announced

Godox is announcing two new, high-power, hard RGB LED panels. Aimed at professionals and medium-large production studios, the Godox KNOWLED P600R and P1200R panels combine high output, rugged build, modular compatibility, and advanced control methods. Both panels support a wide CCT range of 1,800-10,000K, as well as full RGB coverage. The P600R offers CRI 96 / TLCI96 while its bigger P1200R brother offers CRI 96 / TLCI 98. This impressive spec list is only part of the story, so let’s dive in.

The lighting market has grown significantly in the last decade or so as various new manufacturers try their luck and ingenuity entering it. While Godox isn’t a particularly old lighting company, they’ve managed to accumulate a lot of experience over the years and now occupy a strong, professional position while still maintaining relative affordability. The KNOWLED P600R and P1200R hard RGB LEDs are a natural evolution in this regard.

The square Godox KNOWLED P600R is a medium-sized RGB LED. The P1200R is essentially an x2 version, about twice the size, power output, price, etc. As their model name suggests, they draw 600W / 1200W respectively. The fixture’s build is quite robust, including a metal yoke, angle adjustment handle, control panel, and various inputs. Both also include active cooling fans to prolong intensive operation.

Being a hard LED RGB panel, the P600R and P1200R gain some significant advantages over their flexible competitors. Perhaps the most noticeable is the lens array enabling the fixtures’ high output. The P600R draws 600W and produces beams as intense as 71,700 lux at a distance of 1 meter at 5600K. The larger P1200R essentially doubles this with 136,000 lux at a distance of 1 meter at 5600K from a 1200W power draw.
