CEA-Leti Reports Co-Integration of GaN MicroLED and Organic Photodetectors for Multifunctional Display Applications
The results were presented in a paper at the Display Week conference titled “Co-Integration of Organic Photodetector with MicroLED Dedicated to Multifunctional Display Application."
As the demand for innovative and interactive displays continues to grow, microLED technology has emerged as a promising contender for future display applications due to its exceptionally high brightness, while maintaining a minimal footprint, leaving room to integrate additional functions. These properties expand the boundaries of traditional displays by making microLED an ideal candidate for integrating both display and sensing functions. However, achieving seamless co-integration between microLED and photodetectors has remained a major technical challenge. Few studies have addressed this issue until CEA-Leti's new research.
One of the major hurdles in integrating microLEDs with photodetectors is the phenomenon of crosstalk coupling. Crosstalk occurs when the light emitted by the microLEDs reaches the photodetector directly before reflecting off the observed scene, leading to interference and diminished sensor performance. Exploring this challenge, the paper presents key insights into how the distance between the illumination source and the photodetector affects crosstalk, providing a deeper understanding of this bottleneck.
Co-integrating microLEDs with organic photodetectors enables highly promising possibilities for new applications, including:
Fingerprint Sensing Across the Entire Display Area: Enables secure access by detecting fingerprints across the entire screen and even extracts detailed images of veins, rather than in specific areas, significantly enhancing security measures for consumer devices.
Infrared Sensing for Novel Interface: Uses IR sensing to perform gesture recognition in close vicinity to the screen to further improve interactive capabilities.
Bio-Monitoring: Enables the extraction of physiological parameters such as, heart rate, blood oxygen levels, body temperature, supporting further advances in health and wellness applications.
As consumer devices such as smartphones and laptops become more integral to daily life, the demand for multifunctional displays continues to increase. This co-integration allows displays that not only show content but also sense the environment—enabling smart interactions, biometrics, and real-time physiological monitoring, all within a single, compact device.

3D Study Sheds New Light on the Mysterious Interior of the Ancient Parthenon
Published in The Annual of the British School at Athens, the study combined archaeological data with detailed simulations of how sunlight would have entered the temple. Contrary to earlier depictions showing the Parthenon flooded with light, de Lara’s research shows that natural light was minimal, and likely used strategically.
The centerpiece of the Parthenon was a massive 12-meter-tall gold-and-ivory statue of Athena. De Lara found that sunlight only illuminated the base of this statue during sunrise on specific days of the year—most of the time, the figure would have stood shrouded in shadow. This dramatic interplay of darkness and light may have enhanced the spiritual and emotional impact on ancient worshippers.
Additional architectural features such as polished surfaces or even shallow reflecting pools may have been used to amplify subtle lighting effects, emphasizing the temple’s sacred atmosphere. The study suggests that the architects of the Parthenon deliberately designed a space where shadow and limited illumination played a central role in the religious experience.
This new interpretation overturns previous assumptions of the Parthenon as a brightly lit structure and highlights how ancient Greek temple design used darkness to evoke mystery and reverence.

Berlin Lighting Company Settles $300K Federal Case Over Foreign Product Sales
According to U.S. Attorney David X. Sullivan, the company and its owner, Thomas DeSantos, allegedly failed to comply with the Buy American Act (BAA) and the Trade Agreements Act (TAA). Specifically, they were accused of supplying products made in China—a country not covered by U.S. trade agreements—while falsely certifying that these products met domestic sourcing requirements.
The violations occurred under a General Services Administration (GSA) contract initiated in 2013, which mandated adherence to the TAA. Despite annual certifications asserting compliance, LED Lighting Solutions reportedly shipped Chinese-made products directly to agencies such as the Air Force, Coast Guard, State Department, and USDA.
Additionally, the company entered into contracts with the Air Force, Army, and FEMA that required BAA compliance but allegedly misrepresented foreign products as American-made.
As part of the settlement, LED Lighting Solutions will also withdraw two appeals related to an Army contract termination.

Intragrain 3D perovskite heterostructure for high-performance pure-red perovskite LEDs
Three-dimensional (3D) CsPbI3-xBrx emitters have excellent carrier transport capability and high colour purity, which could allow efficient and ultrabright pure-red PeLEDs. However, such devices are prone to efficiency roll-off, resulting in low efficiency and low brightness under high current density.
Here, by using electrically excited transient absorption spectroscopy, we discovered the efficiency roll-off was induced by hole leakage. Therefore, we developed a CsPbI3-xBrx intragrain heterostructure containing narrow bandgap emitters and wide bandgap barriers to confine the injected carriers.
The wide bandgap barrier was incorporated by introducing strongly bonding molecules into the [PbX6]4− framework to expand the 3D CsPbI3-xBrx lattice. This strategy resulted in bright and efficient pure-red PeLEDs, with a high brightness of 24,600 cd m−2, maximum external quantum efficiency of 24.2% and low efficiency roll-off, maintaining a 10.5% external quantum efficiency at a high luminance of 22,670 cd m−2.

Samsung Display Achieves Industry-First True Bright Marketing Claim Verification from UL Solutions
To achieve UL Solutions’ Marketing Claim Verification, Samsung’s True Bright, which is a distinction Samsung gives to displays that provides greater perceived brightness when compared to LCDs of the same PCL score, was evaluated for Perceptual Contrast Length (PCL) to quantify the brightness of the black of a display. PCL, which has been adopted as an industry standard by SEMI1, refers to the brightness of a display specifically as perceived by the human eye. This metric acknowledges that perceived brightness is influenced not only by the physical light emitted by the panel but also by its contrast ratio. OLED displays typically have a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 — over a thousand times that of standard LCDs. The enhanced contrast of OLEDs ensures that the same image is perceived as brighter when compared to LCD displays.
UL Solutions evaluated fifteen of Samsung Display’s OLEDs for laptops, tablets, and automobiles, and seven of its QD-OLEDs for monitors and TVs. UL Solutions verified Samsung Display’s claim that its OLEDs and QD-OLEDs provide an average 1.5 times greater perceived brightness than LCDs of the same PCL score. According to assessments by UL Solutions, Samsung Display’s 300-nit OLEDs have the same perceived brightness (279.37) as 510-nit LCDs, and its 500-nit QD-OLEDs have the same perceived brightness (310.9) as 767-nit LCDs.
As the performance of IT devices rapidly advances, it is essential to achieve high brightness with relatively low power consumption. Especially for IT and automotive applications, higher brightness that increases outdoor visibility is very important. Samsung OLEDs deliver greater value to consumers by offering higher perceived brightness than LCDs.

Seoul Semiconductor: Unified Patent Court Orders Recall of Products Infringing Essential Micro LED Patents
The court ordered an immediate ban on sales, as well as the recall and destruction of infringing products.
This ruling is Seoul’s second victory at the UPC, following its October 2024 judgment prohibiting the sales of products infringing Seoul’s patents across eight countries — a first in the LED industry.
Laser Components is a global distributor offering electronic components across U.S., Europe, and Canada. This company was found to have sold products that infringed Seoul’s WICOP technology, No-wire and robust structure essential for Micro LED applications.
Seoul’s WICOP technology is the world’s first technology to overcome the structural limitations of conventional LED manufacturing. Unlike silicon semiconductors used in AI memory, LEDs are made with compound materials like gallium and indium, which require vertical alignment of positive and negative electrodes as well as wires to connect the electrodes. Seoul Semiconductor was the first to solve this problem by creating its “No-wire” technology, which connects electrodes directly without wires.
This innovation improves light emission efficiency and offers a strong, durable structure that resists heat and humidity, setting a new benchmark for optical semiconductors.
Today, WICOP technology is widely adopted across applications requiring miniaturization and high performance, including Micro LEDs, automotive headlamps, smartphone flashes, and backlight units. Its compact yet durable structure has also accelerated its use in advanced packaging products.
