Sam Penny announced this week that four new, improved LED product are now available on the website: two to replace 12-volt halogen bulbs in “puck” fixtures and two to replace wedge-type bulbs in RV ceiling and sconce fixtures. The new halogen bulb replacements are the G4.RV2N-H and the G4.RV3N-Flex. The new wedge bulb replacements are the W9.RV2N-H and the W9.RV3N-H. The original white LEDs used in 12-volt environments had a stark, blue hue. They were high-heat single-emitter chips and used a plastic cap to focus the light into a narrow beam – a feature great for flashlights but bad for general lighting. Neutek led the industry in adopting flat, wide-angle, natural hue warmer phosphers and always used multiple emitters in each LED element to obtain more light at lower temperatures. They also incorporated into every product several voltage and power control circuits needed to protect LEDs from the harsh electrical and thermal environment found in RVs and boats.

LED lamps need to comply with the WEEE Regulations
You may already be aware of the WEEE Regulations which require electrical and electronic equipment to be recycled when it reaches end-of-life. As well as toasters and hairdryers, small WEEE includes compact fluorescent lamps (or low-energy light bulbs), but did you know that since May last year, LEDs have also been classed by the Environment Agency as “in scope” for the WEEE Regulations?

Solar Lamps to Replace Kerosene Counterparts
Denver-based startup Nokero recently debuted a solar-powered lightbulb. Each five-inch solar lightbulb contains five LEDs, and four small solar panels made of single crystalline cells embedded in the plastic casing. With a claimed lifespan of 50,000 to 100,000 hours, the lightbulb itself is weather-proof and designed for outdoor use. It also has a mechanism that switches on the lamp whenever it is placed in a dark area. Power is stored in replaceable nickel metal hydride batteries produced by the company. These recyclable components are rated to last for two to three years.

Shanghai Epilight Selects Veeco's MOCVD Systems for Its LED Manufacturing Capacity Ramp
Veeco Instruments Inc. announced that during the recently completed second quarter, Shanghai Epilight Technology Company Ltd., one of the largest LED manufacturers in China, placed a multi-tool order for Veeco TurboDisc(R) K465i(TM) Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) systems. The equipment is for Epilight's planned capacity expansion at their Shanghai high-brightness light emitting diode (HB-LED) fab. Mr. Wendi Liu, President of Epilight commented, "We selected Veeco's K465i MOCVD system because of its excellent system design and the good performance in the field. It is simply the best choice for high-volume production of LEDs. Given the increased demand for LEDs in such applications as general illumination, TV backlight and outdoor displays, we intend to ramp our production quickly. Array LED Lamps Light up Broward Center for the Performing Arts
Nexxus Lighting, Inc. announced that its Array Lighting R30 LED light bulbs have been installed throughout the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The Array lights replace incandescent bulbs at this world-class performing arts center that opened in 1991. "We've swapped incandescent bulbs for Array LED lamps in locations throughout our facility - everywhere from elevators and lobbies to the theater and stage with plans to do more," said Michael Kidwell, Broward Center's Maintenance Technician II. GE Advances OLED Research
According to a report in Electrical Marketing's LiveWire, GE has reached a milestone essential for producing OLEDs at a low cost. The article reports that GE and Konica Minolta plan to manufacture OLEDs using high-speed, roll-to-roll processes rather than the vacuum-based batch processes used by companies in the OLED display industry. Roll-to-roll processing is key to making OLEDs commercially viable for general lighting applications. .

Vu1 Announces Allowance of First U.S. Patent
Vu1 Corporation, a developer and manufacturer of mercury-free, energy-efficient, general illumination lighting technology, announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a Notice of Allowance for a patent application for its ESL(TM) lighting technology. U.S. Patent Application Serial No.: 11/969,840 is for the system and apparatus for cathodoluminescent lighting, relating to the method of operation to create light via phosphor and a cathode, a key component of Vu1's unique Electron Stimulated Luminescence (ESL(TM)) clean, energy efficient lighting technology.
"The allowance of Vu1's first patent application, one of 11 pending U.S. and international patent applications that we have already submitted for our ground-breaking technology, is another very important step for Vu1," commented R. Gale Sellers, Vu1's Chief Executive Officer. "With Vu1's first preliminary order received, its first patent application now allowed, its manufacturing facilities operational and ready to ramp up, the Vu1 team is excited to be moving ever closer to delivering on the promise of its ESL(TM) technology. Supertex Introduces Two AEC-Q100 Compliant LED Drivers
Supertex, Inc. introduced the AT9917 and the AT9932, LED lamp driver integrated circuits (ICs), designed specifically for solid-state lighting applications in automobiles, such as head lights, tail lights, indicator lights, dome lights, and panel backlights. These ICs feature technology that is ideal for automotive applications.
The AT9917 uses a peak current mode control scheme to drive single switch converters and includes an internal transconductance amplifier to accurately control output current to the LEDs. It also includes a fault output using an external FET, to disconnect the LED string during erroneous conditions, such as an alternator load dump.
The AT9932 features a unique feed forward current control scheme, which achieves very low susceptibility to input voltage transients, making it indispensable for automotive LED lighting applications. The IC can maintain constant output current even under vigorous input transient conditions. Its output current control loop is inherently stable and can be compensated using a single capacitor with the appropriate damping at the coupling capacitor.
The AT9917 and AT9932 are available in 24 lead TSSOP packages (AT9917TS-G & AT9932TS-G). The parts are RoHS compliant. Samples are available from stock. Pricing is US$2.05 each for the AT9917TS-G and US$2.23 each for the AT9932TS-G, both in 1K quantities.

US company unveils new ultra-efficient LED bulb
A firm in the US has launched a new variety of LED bulb which it states is both more efficient and longer-lasting than traditional lighting technology. Leds America has introduced its Led-O bulb, a 100 per cent recyclable item which is designed to be usable as a straight replacement for a standard bulb. The 6W bulb is said to be able to deliver the same lighting output as a traditional 60W bulb and is 50 per cent more efficient than the current standard compact fluorescent lamp bulbs.
Sharp to launch new LED lamp models
Sharp will introduce into the Japanese market six new LED lamp models, including the E17-base compact lamp that achieves brightness at the industry’s highest levels. The DL-JA51N E17-base compact lamp achieves brightness (500 lumens) and luminous efficiency (96 lm/W) at the industry’s highest levels.

mLED Ltd spins out of Strathclyde
Dense arrays of miniature LED light sources called microLEDs hold promise in micro-display applications ranging from general lighting to neuroscience, microscopy, and communications. Startup mLED Ltd has spun out of the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland with a funding round led by the Braveheart Investment Group. The company is focused on microLED (micropixellated LED) technology that integrates thousands of miniature LED emitters using a GaN (gallium nitride) semiconductor process.

LED signs being considered for county
Churches and other locations throughout Dyer County may soon be able to send instant messages to their parishioners and any others who might be driving past the church's location. The idea was tossed to the Dyer County Regional Planning Commission at their meeting this past Thursday. Daniel Cobb, Dyer County Planner, presented a packet at the meeting bringing members up to date on potential regulations regarding the flashing LED signs. Cobb noted members should carefully consider any claims concerning safety and other aspects, keeping in mind the information was from only one company.

Green electronics specialist ON Semiconductor has launched an offline driver for LEDs which is designed to make the technology more cost-effective than ever. The companys new NCL30001 product is an integrated device which provides power factor correction (PFC) and isolated step-down AC-DC power conversion in a single stage. It is designed to be configured for applications such as street and architectural lighting and provides advantages such as a reduced component count and superior overall efficiency.

Cree, Philips to license each other's LED patents
Green lighting companies Cree Inc. and Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands have signed a global cross-licensing agreement to use each other's patented technology in light-emitting diodes. The companies said they both hold "broad and substantial" patent portfolios that are important to their respective businesses.

LED lighting control using powerline communication
LED lighting continues to successfully carve out a growing portion of $50 billion lighting market, which is not surprising given that LEDs provide the best energy efficiency when compared to CFL and incandescent bulbs. However, LED fixtures are expensive to manufacture because of the high cost of LEDs and heat-sink design. Instead of competing with the CFL bulbs only on energy saving, LED Lighting manufacturers are trying to differentiate LED products by offering more advanced features than their CFL competitors.
Manufacturers hail growing market for LED TVs
The wide array of advantages offered by LED TVs compared to older technology is to lead to growing take-up of the technology. This is the prediction of manufacturers Samsung and LG, which told Indian publication Businessworld that they are to offer a wider range of LED TVs this year in order to cater to demand.

Lumex launches Titanbrite high-power LEDs
Lumex has extended their TitanBrite line of high-power LED technology with new 2-watt, 3-watt and 5-watt LEDs. The surface-mounted LEDs provide high intensity light of up to 58, 210 and 300 lumens respectively. The company claims that compared to similar high-power LEDs, the new TitanBrite products can provide up to a 30% improvement in heat dissipation performance and a 60% enhancement in electrostatic discharge protection. The new line features unique packaging that allows for simplified integration and for additional savings in the area of product design.

Intertek Awarded Redbird LED ETL Mark
Redbird LED, an Atlanta, GA. firm that specializes in the design, manufacturing and distribution of energy efficient LED linear lighting products for industrial and commercial applications announced today that it has received the ETL Listing Mark for their products. The complete family of Cardinal brand linear lights, including a variety of lengths, color temperatures, and wattages are now certified to UL standards 1993, 1598, 1598(B), and 8750. These lights have an internal power supply and this listing confirms that the Cardinal™ lights are certified for retrofits of existing fluorescent light tubes. Because Cardinal linear lights use the same shape and form factor as fluorescent tubes, old fixtures can updated to LED by simply bypassing the ballast and installing Redbird LED linear lights.

Although LEDs consume nearly one-tenth the power of incandescent bulbs and half the power of compact fluorescents, they often have other issues. Some white light LEDs give off a greenish tone.
