Light Bulb Drinks That Actually Light Up Are The Coolest Drink Trend On Instagram

Last fall, we uncovered a trendy new way to drink smoothies thanks to Darling Cafe in Australia. Darling serves its frozen beverages in repurposed lightbulbs, and based on how cute the cafe's Instagram photos are, we thought this vessel was destined to become as ubiquitous as mason jar. That hasn't quite happened just yet, but the trend has popped up in spots like Square Bar in San Jose. Though you may not have seen light bulb drinks at your favorite corner, PopSugar pointed out that the trend, which apparently started in Seoul, South Korea, has recently been taken to a whole new level.

Larson Electronics LLC Releases 500W High Bay Outdoor Rated LED Light

From Solar Cells to LEDs, Improvements in Perovskite-Based Technology Accelerate

In just seven years of development, the efficiency of the perovskite solar cell has increased to the point where it rivals — and could soon overtake — the efficiency of the conventional photovoltaic cell. However, the perovskite structure continues to experience stability issues, causing these cells to degrade quickly and shortening their lifespans. Scientists at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) have identified degradation factors and developed a potential solution to improving perovskite solar cell architecture. For the manufacture of perovskite LEDs, OIST researchers investigated an all-vapor growth process by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). According to the team, there are many advantages to preparing perovskites using a vapor-based growth process, including ease of patterning, ability to batch process and material compatibility.

When did shopping for light bulbs become so confusing?

Is it just me, or has shopping for the right light bulb become rather confusing? For something that supposedly runs more energy efficient, the options and jargon on the box leave me scratching my head and spending way too much time (and energy) shopping for a bulb to light up my life, so to speak. Gone are the days of only having to choose what wattage is needed, now you have to consider light temperatures, watt conversions, volts and lumens. I recently installed two antique light fixtures over the prep table in our kitchen and I set out to find an LED bulb that didn’t look LED.

Outdoor Lighting: Finding your purpose

When lighting up the outdoors, first consider your purpose. Outdoor dining areas have different lighting needs than areas for lounging and conversation. The right outdoor lighting helps you better enjoy and use your outdoor space, whatever its purpose. Having an outdoor kitchen in summertime is optimal. Even a simple gas grill can go a long way in conserving the coolness of your home. No matter the scale of your outdoor cooking area, it needs task lighting. Recessed fixtures can be hidden in the beams of an overhead patio cover or pergola, or outdoor sconces can be mounted above the cooking surface for added safety and accuracy with food preparation.

Navigant Research Expects Global LED Lamp Shipments to Reach Nearly 2 Billion in 2026

A new report from Navigant Research examines the global market for LED lighting, providing global forecasts of lamp and module unit shipments and revenue through 2026.

The adoption of LEDs has continued to increase in recent years, propelled by declining prices and increased efficacy. Reducing energy costs was initially the primary driver for adoption; however, better light quality, longer lifespans, and improved controllability have helped accelerate LED market growth across all segments. Click to tweet: According to a new report from @NavigantRSRCH, global LED lamp shipments are expected to increase from 961.1 million in 2017 to nearly two billion in 2026.

While all segments of the lighting market have experienced change due to the increased adoption of LEDs, the commercial segment is further along than the residential or industrial segments. According to the report, not all segments are expected to see the same growth over the next 10 years or experience the same penetration rates. Due to the slower adoption in the latter two markets, they present increased opportunities for the uptake of LEDs.

Textured LED gives green light to Li-Fi

Standard light-emitting diodes (LEDs) used for home lighting can now transmit data more rapidly between electronic devices, thanks to new research from A*STAR. Wireless visible light communication—also known as Li-Fi—relies on data signals encoded in incredibly brief pulses of light, far too quick for the eye to see. By supplementing congested Wi-Fi networks, Li-Fi could increase the capacity and speed of data transmission in offices, homes and public spaces. However, white LEDs typically use a phosphor coating to create a natural-looking white light, and the time it takes for the phosphor's glow to fade away limits how quickly the LED can transmit data.

The Scientific Reason You Don't Like LED Bulbs

Scientists used to think we could see no more than about 90 flashes of light a second but now we know it’s more like 2,000 because the eyes move so rapidly when we change gaze from one point to another. During the eye movement, the flicker of light creates a pattern that we can see. And this has some surprising consequences for our health thanks to the way some types of lighting can affect us. In particular, it could discourage people from using more energy-saving LED lightbulbs. No similar study has yet been performed for LED lights. But because LED flickering is even more pronounced, with the light dimming by 100% rather than the roughly 35% of fluorescent lamps, there’s a chance that LEDs could be even more likely to cause headaches.

Koogeek WiFi Smart Light Bulb

Koogeek makes a smart light bulb that has been pretty positively reviewed thus far. With most smart home devices, you’re going to be using an app like this. The cool thing about the Koogeek WiFi Smart Light Bulb is that it doesn’t require a hub. A lot of the times, when you have something like a smart light bulb, each bulb will be connected to a separate hub. And it’s that hub that actually interfaces with the app. It’s not that much of an inconvenience, but it is a separate piece of hardware for you to worry about. You don’t need to use one of those with this particular light bulb.

Why a Texas politician cares about which light bulb you can buy

Lewisville Rep. Michael Burgess is a medical doctor who stands out as a well-known Republican voice on health care and other marquee issues that consume Congress' time and energy. But one of his most persistent battles has focused on an issue far beyond the main spotlight: the traditional incandescent light bulb. Burgess has for years — and most recently, last month — inserted language into key spending bills to protect those old-school lamps by preventing the U.S. Energy Department from enforcing decade-old rules that require light bulbs to abide by more stringent energy-efficiency standards.

Augmented Reality Displays …from a Lightbulb

Desktopography uses a small projector, a depth sensor, and a computer to project images onto surfaces. Plug the device into a light socket and it creates a projection similar to a smartphone device. However, it is not as simple as a smartphone or a projector, as the device detects objects that obstruct the view, and automatically moves the digital applications so you can view them on the surface. It also allows applications to snap to specific objects – such as the laptop shown in the video below—so they follow the object if moved around.

Tulsa LED display manufacturer Lektron has some big clients

Across the top of an A&W Root Beer, Phillips 66, a Burger King, Braum’s or a La Quinta, all along the streets and highways of North America, there are miles of tiny LED bulbs shining red, pink and green into the night, a Tulsa-made reminder that there’s a bed, a tank of gas or a meal just inside the parking lot. Those miles of LED bulbs leave Lektron LED Technologies, a small manufacturer near 46th Street and Memorial Drive. The company is the sole provider of the red bans across Burger King and Phillips 66 convenience stores.

Consumers can't spot the difference between bulb types

It's official: European consumers struggle to tell apart different bulb types, easily confusing LEDs with incandescents, CFLs, metal halides, and others. So declared Brussels-based EucoLight, which cares about the muddle because it oversees lamp recycling in Europe, where different waste procedures can apply for different bulbs. In a survey, EucoLight showed images of the varieties to consumers in six European countries, and found plenty of bafflement. “Most consumers have difficulty in differentiating different lamp types,” said Nigel Harvey, a director at EucoLight. “That is why it is logical for all waste lamps to be collected in the same container.”

Congress Is Still Fighting Over Energy-Efficient Light Bulbs

Congressional Republicans renewed their effort to save the traditional light bulb, passing a measure to block federal energy standards that have come to symbolize government overreach for many consumers but are largely embraced by manufacturers as the cost of the newer bulbs has plummeted.

The House passed an amendment to a spending bill late Wednesday to block enforcement of Energy Department rules requiring manufacturers to phase out sales of incandescent light bulbs to cut power use. While the measure faces an uncertain future in the Senate, its sponsor called it an important victory for freedom.

Professor claims Obama’s eco-friendly light bulbs are causing health problems

A professor in the United Kingdom claims LED light bulbs, which have grown in popularity since the federal government began to push consumers away from incandescent light bulbs in 2007, cause headaches and can create feelings of pain and dizziness.

Arnold Wilkins, a professor of psychology at the University of Essex, said LED lights dim by 100 percent, which means the turn on and off hundreds of times every second. This constant flickering is not noticeable to many people, but Arnold said the effects of the flickering can include headaches, feelings of pain, and dizziness, according to a report by the Daily Mail (U.K.).

Made on Long Island: LEDs for passenger aircraft

LEDs have replaced fluorescent bulbs in cabin lighting on aircraft. LEDs are lighter and more efficient but the average traveler wouldn't even know. "If we are successful with what we're trying to do with our lighting we will create an ambiance, we will create something that the passenger will come in, sit down, not know that they're surrounded by LED light but will feel the effect of the sunrise or a sunset or a meal scene or a boarding scene," said Stephen Scover, the VP and general manager of Rockwell Collins Lighting and Integrated Systems on Long Island. The company has been around for about 40 years and manufactures out of a 65,000-square-foot factory in Bohemia.
