Philips’ Hue app now uses AR to preview how a smart lamp will light up a room
Version 5.27 of the Hue app is available for iOS, iPadOS, and Android. However, the standout AR feature is limited to iPhone Pro and iPad Pro models equipped with a lidar sensor, which Apple introduced with the iPhone 12 Pro in 2020. Located in the app’s Explore tab, this feature lets you test 12 different Philips Hue products, such as the Hue Twilight sunrise lamp, the Hue Dymera wall light that shines both up and down, and the Hue Infuse ceiling light.
While the AR preview isn’t entirely polished and sometimes allows a lamp to float around the room, it offers more than just placing a 3D object on a background. The virtual Hue products can demonstrate how a room will look with various lighting scenes, effects, and colors. The app can even simulate how a lamp would appear in a darkened room at night compared to the middle of the day. Although it’s not a perfect simulation of how these lighting products might alter the appearance or mood of a room, it provides a good idea of how they will look in your home.
The new “do not disturb” option, which was an experimental feature in Hue Labs before it was shut down last June, is now a permanent feature in the Hue app across all platforms. This option sets Hue products’ motion and security sensors to only react to movement when all lights in a room or zone are turned off, and you can schedule it for specific times of the day.

A New Standard for Rooftop Attractions
Tishman Speyer enlisted THG Creative in creating spectacular and modern experiences for the public that would be a visual signature of the Top of the Rock experience, while maintaining the richly elegant and restrained Art Deco style of the entire campus. The revitalized Top of the Rock now offers visitors a host of immersive experiences concepted and designed by THG Creative, including dynamic Welcome Gallery activations, engaging theater and elevator multimedia shows, and two standout rooftop attractions nearly 900 feet in the air: The Beam and Skylift.
The crown jewel of THG's Top of the Rock project is the aptly named Skylift, a circular, open-air platform that elevates visitors 30 feet above the 70th floor roof deck to dazzle with unobstructed 360-degree cityscape views. Skylift, which opened in October 2024, features 96 LED pixel flutes totaling over 636 meters of LED and a custom-programmed 3.5-minute light show. THG's careful design approach creates harmony between the modern technology of Skylift and the historic architecture surrounding it; the final design required review and approval from the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.
One floor below Skylift, THG also designed one of New York's most coveted rooftop experiences, The Beam. Opened in December 2023, The Beam invites guests to recreate "Lunch Atop a Skyscraper" — the iconic 1932 photo depicting 11 ironworkers perched on a steel beam while 30 Rockefeller Plaza was under construction. Visitors are strapped into their seats on a recreated beam located on the 69th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza and lifted 12 feet above the observation deck platform. The Beam then rotates 180-degrees providing spectacular views of the Big Apple, including Central Park, the Hudson River and the skyscrapers of Midtown and upper Manhattan.
Transforming the Guest Experience from the Ground (Floor) Up
In addition to thrilling additions to Top of the Rock Observation Deck, THG reimagined the visitor experience from the moment guests enter the mezzanine-level Welcome Gallery. As of July 2024, the Welcome Gallery now features numerous interactive activations that provide photo moments while also illustrating the nearly 100 years of rich cultural and creative history on campus. Upon arrival, guests are immediately treated to over 304 linear feet of hand-painted murals designed by Sally Wern Comport that pay homage to the elegant and modern Art Deco style of Rockefeller Center.
At the center of the Welcome Gallery, guests will find a dynamic six-minute projection-mapped show on a highly detailed 10-foot-tall model of Rockefeller Center, captivating viewers with stories of its construction, art, seasons, commerce, and glamor. From there, visitors are invited to enter the multimedia theater to explore Rockefeller Center via a 5-minute pulsed media show that runs through the history of the iconic NYC landmark from its conception to modern day. Using archival footage, animation, and projections, the show culminates in a surprise and delight moment tied to the iconic Christmas Tree lighting complete with a magical snow effect.
As a final touch, THG also transformed the elevator experience to seamlessly transition the guest journey from mezzanine level up to the 67th floor. Guests ascend and descend 30 Rockefeller Plaza while being immersed in two dazzling 46-second shows that bring to life the building's most iconic art and tenants.

Arthur Xiao wins SID Detroit Metro Chapter Academic Award for work on red micro-LEDs
For the past five years, Xiao has been working with advisor Prof. Zetian Mi to develop the world’s smallest red-emitting III-nitride LEDs, suitable for virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) applications. III-nitride LEDs smaller than a micrometer, known as micro-LEDs, enhance the resolution of electronic displays––often at the expense of efficiency, due to damage incurred during the fabrication process.
Previous work in Mi’s research group increased the stability of red micro-LEDs by adding indium gallium nitride (InGaN) to the devices, but the high concentration of indium can lead to material instability. Therefore, red micro-LEDs remain more difficult to produce and demonstrate than blue and green micro-LEDs.
Xiao has continued this work, using an innovative new method to stabilize the material and further increase efficiency of red micro-LEDs for practical use. Using bottom-up selective area epitaxy, Xiao fabricates micro-LED devices without exposing them to damaging plasma. This method also allows him to manage the stress on the material, stabilizing it even in the presence of the indium.
“Material stress management is crucial for achieving the levels of efficiency and indium incorporation thus far out of reach for conventional top-down III-nitride micro-LEDs,” said Xiao. “This development is a game changer: it enables the achievement of high efficiency (sub)micrometer scale LEDs that were not previously possible.”
Xiao, Mi, and colleagues were able to demonstrate a green micro-LED more efficient than the OLEDs used for cell phone screens, as well as a red micro-LED an order of magnitude more efficient than existing red LEDs of a similar size.
However, the team didn’t stop there––having engineered a more efficient red micro-LED, Xiao focused on the color quality. At high electric currents, InGaN red micro-LEDs tend to show blueshifting, meaning that the wavelength of light shifts toward a higher-frequency, blue color.
