Cree LED debuts OptiLamp

Cree LED — part of the Penguin Solutions group — has launched a new class of OptiLamp LEDs, a display technology that embeds driver and control electronics directly into each LED pixel. This upgrade is designed to improve image quality, boost energy efficiency and simplify how LED displays are engineered and maintained.

Unlike traditional LED screens that depend on separate driver chips and complex multiplexing, OptiLamp LEDs monitor and manage both light output and device health at the pixel level within the LED package itself. This approach enables thinner, lighter and more reliable displays, while also reducing manufacturing complexity, material costs and long-term maintenance needs.

According to Cree LED’s president, Joe Clark, the new technology sets a higher benchmark for performance in both large-scale and small-scale LED installations. Having intelligence integrated into each pixel means screens can deliver brighter, sharper visuals, greater clarity and improved energy efficiency — all without the traditional system overhead.

OptiLamp LEDs also support true pixel-by-pixel control, which eliminates visual issues like scan lines and image tearing, and offers deeper color precision thanks to high-bit control per channel. Built-in monitoring and calibration data further help with proactive maintenance and consistent performance over the life of a display.

Cree LED showcased OptiLamp technology at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2026 in Barcelona, highlighting how this innovation could influence next-generation display design and broaden application possibilities across the industry.
