LED streetlight upgrade would reduce energy costs
A proposed streetlight upgrade will make for brighter and more energy-efficient nights in the city. By the end of summer, Newburyport plans to upgrade all overhead streetlights with new light-emitting diode bulbs, known for their low maintenance cost, extremely long lifespan, lack of toxic chemicals – such as mercury in traditional lamps – and increased brightness. The new LED lights will use 68 percent less electricity than the current fixtures, further reducing greenhouse gas emissions, according to Lightsmart, the company chosen by the city to assist with the upgrade.
