Newport (Penstate) borough council is
considering switching 26 decorative lights along Market and Second streets to LED illumination. The matter was discussed during council's Oct. 17 meeting. Council President Gerry Robinson reported the borough has received several options and quotes. He suggested changing two of the lights -- by the Perry County Council of the Arts building and in front of Steckley's Pets -- as a test and then full implementation if successful. He recommended corn-cob style, 65-watt bulbs. The change should shave electricity costs and eliminate replacing ballasts, which typically cost several hundred dollars when needed.
