New LED design for next-level realism in immersive displays

Researchers of Meijo University and King Abdullah University have developed cheap and ultra-small LEDs that can display full-color images at high resolution for immersive reality applications1. The LEDs are based on gallium indium nitride semiconductors, which are versatile materials that can emit different colors of light.

The researchers stacked blue, green, and red micro-LED arrays on the same wafer, connected by tunnel junctions, and achieved a pixel density of 330 pixels per inch.

The LEDs showed low resistance and clear color distinction, but had some defects that could be improved by optimizing the crystal growth conditions.

This work has minimized the common limitations of past LEDs based on gallium indium nitride technology.
