TOTEM DE LUZ: a kinetic lighting sculpture that blends motion and illumination
The project TOTEM DE LUZ by KUTARQ studio is an experimental lighting piece that straddles the line between art and functional design. Rather than being a static fixture, this object incorporates mechanical motion to dynamically change how light behaves in a space.
Constructed from materials like stainless steel, tensioned cable systems, pulleys, counterweights, and glass, the piece makes its mechanics part of the visual experience. A double-pulley arrangement lets the light source move up and down along the vertical structure, altering both the direction and quality of the emitted light.
When positioned high within the frame, the lamp illuminates an onyx diffuser above, creating soft, indirect ambient lighting. Lowered into a recessed opening, the beam becomes more focused and task-oriented — useful for reading or directing attention to a particular area.
By exposing its moving parts and combining them with refined materials, TOTEM DE LUZ treats mechanics and light as integral parts of a single sculptural expression. It invites viewers to engage both visually and physically with the way light and motion interact within a defined vertical form.
