Birmingham: Streetlight replacement complete; interstate lighting next
A project to convert Birmingham’s 30,000 streetlights to LED lights is mostly complete, city officials say. The only lights that remain are some “specialty lights” throughout the city. All of the streetlights on light poles throughout the downtown area and neighborhoods have been converted to LED, said James Fowler, director for Birmingham’s Department of Transportation. This light conversion is part of an agreement between the city and Alabama Power signed in July 2016. The five-year agreement transfers maintenance of the city streetlights to Alabama Power.
