Pittsburgh is contemplating a $2.2 million study on converting streetlights to LED
Pittsburgh officials are thinking about implementing a plan to change the city’s streetlights to LED lights. The City Council has given initial approval to pay The Efficiency Network, a subsidiary of Duquesne Light based in Pittsburgh, over $2.2 million to conduct a study on replacing the high-pressure sodium lights currently used by the city with more energy-efficient LED lights.
Kim Lucas, the director of the city’s Department of Mobility & Infrastructure, stated that LED lights use less electricity and are expected to have lower maintenance costs compared to the older lights currently in use. Councilwoman Erika Strassburger, D-Squirrel Hill, said, “This will undoubtedly save energy, taxpayer money, and reduce carbon emissions.”
