Energy-efficient LEDs to brighten Saginaw schools by fall

Classrooms across Saginaw Public Schools are set to become brighter and more energy-efficient, as the district rolls out a large-scale LED lighting upgrade expected to be completed before the new school year.

The project involves replacing more than 12,000 outdated light fixtures with modern LED systems across multiple school buildings and facilities. The upgrade is part of a broader effort to modernize infrastructure while reducing long-term operating costs.

Working with energy solutions provider Ameresco, the district is installing high-efficiency lighting along with advanced control systems. These improvements are designed to lower electricity consumption and create more consistent, higher-quality lighting for students and staff.

Beyond better lighting, the initiative is expected to deliver significant cost savings. By reducing energy use, the district can redirect funds toward educational programs, student support, and facility improvements instead of utility bills.

The work began in early 2026 and is scheduled to wrap up by late summer, ensuring that upgraded lighting will be in place when students return in the fall.
