Samsung Display Sets a New Brightness Standard for Premium Laptops with VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 Tandem OLED
Announced by VESA this month, VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 requires a display to reproduce black levels of 0.0005 nits or lower while achieving peak brightness of 1,400 nits at a 10% On Pixel Ratio, or OPR, which refers to the percentage of active pixels among all pixels that make up the screen. The new tier raises the peak brightness requirement by 40% compared with True Black 1000, previously VESA’s highest certification level. Products certified to True Black 1400 combine OLED’s signature true black performance with enhanced brightness to deliver exceptional viewing quality.
Samsung Display’s new tandem OLED panel for laptops can reach peak brightness of up to 1,600 nits at the panel level. This is more than 40% higher than the 1,100-nit peak brightness of conventional OLED panels with a single emissive layer, also known as single-stack OLED, and places it among the brightest commercially available OLED panels for laptops.
Samsung Display is supplying tandem OLED panels that support VESA DisplayHDR™ True Black 1400 to multiple global PC manufacturers. The Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition (16", 11), featuring the panel, earned True Black 1400 certification on July 8. Other customers, including ASUS, Dell Technologies, and MSI, are expected to unveil products supporting the True Black 1400 certification from the second half of this year through next year.
The new panel uses a tandem OLED architecture that stacks two organic emissive layers to improve light-emitting efficiency and achieve higher brightness. Because the two stacked layers emit light together, tandem OLED can produce greater brightness using the same current or reduce the load on each emissive layer at the same brightness level, extending the panel’s lifespan. As a result, the panel delivers both higher brightness and a longer lifetime. Under typical laptop operating brightness conditions, Samsung Display’s tandem OLED panel offers more than twice the lifespan of a conventional single-stack OLED panel.
Samsung Display’s advanced materials technology is another key factor behind the tandem OLED panel’s strong brightness performance. The efficiency and stability of organic emissive materials determine both the brightness an OLED can achieve at a given power level and its lifespan at a given brightness. By applying newly developed organic materials to its tandem OLED, Samsung Display has further enhanced the panel’s overall performance.
Samsung Display will showcase the VESA DisplayHDR™ True Black 1400 tandem OLED panel for laptops at K-Display 2026, the Korea Display Exhibition, taking place at COEX in Seoul from July 22 to 24. The panel will be featured in the “Ultimate Performance Showcase” zone at Samsung Display’s booth. Video content designed around creator use cases that require precise image-quality assessment, such as video editing and review, will be displayed on the panel, allowing visitors to experience the vivid high-brightness picture quality of tandem OLED firsthand.
