Fitchburg nights get brighter with LEDs
By the end of this month, Fitchburg is expected to have all 3,000 of its streetlights converted from high-pressure sodium lights to state-of-the-art, energy-saving LED lights. The lights, which are projected to save the city $1 million over the course of their expected life of 20 years, were purchased with a 10-year lease agreement. They are much more energy-efficient than Fitchburg's old streetlights, and include sensors that are networked together, which means they can be easily dimmed or brightened through a computer system at the Department of Public Works.
