Taiwan firms developing IR LED devices for biometric applications

Chip makers and LED packaging service providers in Taiwan have developed IR LED chips or devices for biometric applications, mainly iris and facial recognition, and are in the process of certification by potential clients, according to a report by Digitimes. Industry sources report that shipments are expected to start in 2017. The report cites unnamed sources that say Epistar has IR LED chips taking up over 10% of all AlGaInP chip output at present, and the proportion is expected to rise to 30% in 2018.
