Massachusetts Offers $11.4 Million to Help its Cities and Towns Convert to LED Streetlights
The state administration under Governor Charley Baker and Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito of Massachusetts announced $11.4 million in grant funding to help Massachusetts cities and convert traditional streetlights to LEDs. Governor Baker recently signed an Executive Order that outlines a comprehensive approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and safeguarding residents, cities, and businesses from the impacts of climate change.
The state funding for the conversion is from the Department of Energy Resources (DOER) Rapid LED Streetlight Conversion Program. DOER has partnered with Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company (MMWEC), the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), Energy New England (ENE), and four Municipal Light Plant (MLP) communities to administer the grant funding to municipalities that currently own their traditional streetlights in hopes of accelerating streetlight conversions to LED-based luminaires.
