LED device treats leading cause of vision loss with light therapy

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a device that beams light into the eyes to improve the vision of people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

This condition progressively damages the center of the retina, the light-detecting region at the back of the eye. Recent data suggests that about 19.8 million Americans aged 40 and older are affected by AMD.

The disease comes in two forms: dry AMD and wet AMD, with dry AMD being more common, accounting for 70% to 90% of cases. Despite its prevalence, there were no effective treatments for dry AMD until now.

The FDA has announced that the Valeda Light Delivery System can be used as a treatment for dry AMD
