Mumbai Central Depot Installs India’s First 2-Way LED Pit Lighting for Rail Maintenance
Mumbai’s Western Railway has installed India’s first two-way switch-controlled LED lighting system at its Mumbai Central Coaching Depot.
The new illumination system is designed with 120 LED pit lights (16W/48V each) and is controlled via two-way switches, allowing for segmented control across two circuits.
Previously, all pit lights would remain illuminated even when certain areas were not in use, leading to unnecessary energy consumption and quicker wear on the lighting fixtures. With the new system, WR employees can now control the lighting at 125-meter intervals, setting illumination levels to 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%, depending on specific requirements.
The Western Railway estimates that this system will save approximately 75% of the depot’s energy consumption—an equivalent of 7.3 megawatt-hours (MWh)—and reduce annual expenses by nearly Rs. 1 lakh.
