Villagers say LEDs have left them in the dark

Residents have reported that new lighting has left large parts of the area in darkness, forcing some to use torches at night.

Cambridgeshire County Council plans to upgrade all street lights across the county to energy-efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) within the next 18 months.

In Milton, where the transition to LEDs is currently underway, locals told the BBC that while areas directly beneath the lights are well illuminated, the light does not spread widely, leaving some zones completely dark.

The council explained that the LEDs are designed to “emit light in a more concentrated way directly towards the road,” which helps reduce light pollution. However, it is “testing and reviewing” the impact of the new lighting following residents’ feedback.
