SteamVR controllers with addressable LEDs
Chris had a realization while playing VR games like Beat Saber: spectators without headsets often felt disconnected from the action. To bridge this gap, he envisioned dynamic environmental lighting that would make everyone feel more involved. Taking the first steps toward this goal, he began interfacing SteamVR controllers with addressable LEDs.
Equipped with Python, OpenVR, and some assistance from ChatGPT, Chris got to work. He developed a mapping utility that allowed him to create a virtual representation of his WLED-controlled LED strips in the real world. Once mapped, he configured the system so that pointing a controller at a specific location would illuminate the corresponding LED strips. Wave at the windows, and the LEDs on that wall light up. Gesture toward another wall, and it reacts the same way—bringing the VR experience to life for everyone in the room.
