Portland saves $1.5 million a year after switching thousands of streetlights to LED

The US city of Portland, Oregon, has significantly reduced the energy consumption of its streetlights and traffic signals by replacing older lighting technology with LEDs. The large-scale conversion of around 45,000 streetlights began in 2014, rather than in 2006 as suggested by some reports.

Portland’s streetlights previously relied largely on high-pressure sodium lamps. The city approved an $18.5 million project in 2012 to replace them with LED fixtures. The new lights use about half as much electricity as the lamps they replaced and are expected to last roughly four times longer. 

The project has also reduced maintenance costs because the LED fixtures require fewer replacements. Portland expects the combination of lower electricity consumption and maintenance expenses to save approximately $1.5 million each year. The city estimates that electricity consumption falls by around 20 million kilowatt-hours annually, while carbon emissions are reduced by approximately 10,500 tons per year. 

The project covered 45,000 of Portland’s roughly 55,000 streetlights. By July 2015, more than 22,600 fixtures had already been replaced. Federal transportation officials later documented the completed program as involving approximately 46,700 streetlights, including both overhead and ornamental fixtures. 

Beyond reducing energy use, the LEDs provide more consistent illumination. Their light distribution can improve visibility along roads while reducing light spilling onto nearby properties. Portland has also incorporated considerations such as reducing unnecessary light pollution into its newer lighting policies. 

The project illustrates how replacing aging municipal infrastructure can reduce both energy consumption and operating costs. Although the initial investment was substantial, Portland expected the savings to recover the cost of the conversion in about eight years. (⁠Portland.gov)
