VIJO raises nearly RMB 100 million to expand Micro LED chip production

VIJO (Suzhou) Optoelectronics Technology, a Chinese manufacturer of Micro LED optical chips, has completed a new financing round worth nearly RMB 100 million, according to a statement published on the company’s official WeChat account.

The funding round was backed by Xinhe Capital, the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area Seed Investment Fund, and Appotronics, a Shanghai-listed semiconductor laser technology company. Peng Qian, chairman of Shenzhen-listed semiconductor inspection equipment supplier Wuhan Jingce Electronic Group, also participated. Existing shareholders, including Fibonacci VC, Lanchi Ventures, and iFLYTEK Ventures, joined the round as well.

VIJO focuses on Micro LED technology, which is primarily used in microdisplays for augmented reality (AR) applications. The company has adopted a vertically integrated approach combining epitaxial growth and chip manufacturing to address a key challenge in Micro LED development: the decline in red-light efficiency as chip sizes become smaller.

Over the past two years, VIJO has moved from research and development into mass production and has entered the supply chains of several customers.

The company’s proprietary epitaxy production line is also nearing operation. VIJO plans to expand the use of its optical chips beyond AR displays, with visible-light communication among the potential applications. Micro LEDs could be used for high-speed data transmission thanks to their fast modulation capabilities and low power consumption.
